we have a problem maggie got 2 shots today...distemper and rabies. both were given in her bottom...which I have never seen but I suppose it is fairly normal. I guess it has to be given in the muscle?? anyway, this was done about an hour and a half ago and she is just freaking out. screaming massively if anything touches her bottom. even sitting down, she cries. picking her up,..she screams. she is walking funny. i called the vet and they said that she wiggled a lot during the shots and that she is probably just very sore and to watch her. to call if it gets worse. is this normal? it is just breaking my heart...my poor puppy is scared and hurting and i really can't hold her without hurting her. she is just staring at me like "why aren't you making me feel better" but i just dont know what to do. everytime i pick her up, she screams. and when she is sitting in my lap, she is crying. i know with my daughter, i would give her pain medicine when she got shots...is there something to give to dogs to help? any advice is greatly appreciated!! |
Jewels cried after she got her 3rd set of shots too. I gave her a 1/2 of a baby asprin |
1/2 a baby aspirin should help a lot. I can't remember how often to give it... maybe every 8 hours if she still needs it? I would ask the vet. |
This happened to Zoey....I called the vet and they said to give her some liquid baby tylenol and if she was not better in the morning to call. So I did, and she was back to normal the next morning. I gave her some tylenol and then wrapped her in a blanky and held her all night long. It worked! |
POOR BABY !!!! my vet sent me home with baby asprin after shots and I can't stand thinking of any puppy in pain like that - Try the vet and they can tell you how much to give according to her weight |
My breeder told me to only allow one shot at a time. Especially rabies. She must be so sore, poor baby. I would tell the vet next time to only give one shot. |
thanks so much for the advice. i will ask them in just a minute... i am really hoping she is not in pain in the morning..she is going to get groomed in the morning...she will not want to do it if she is still hurting :( |

Call your vet there is a pain med they can give her. we had this problem with boo once and they said they could give him pain meds. Also hen you get shots ask them to gin=ve them some meds befor the shot it will help with the pain later we did this and haven't had a prob since. |
She will most likely be fine by tomrrow. Jewels was okay by the next day |
I always gave the baby asprin, would stay away from Tylenol, I was told it was dangerous for dogs. |
poor baby, I'd call the vet for advice. Every time we get shots from the vets, we usually come home with a sheet of 'after care' instructions. Did you get anything? |
Poor baby:( Yes I think some baby tylenol & a fice fluffy blanket wrapped in moms arms will help. Keep us posted. Did you not go in with her? I wondered since you say they told you she wiggled alot. Sometimes the people they have holding the pets are not very experienced plus the pet is scared because they dont know them. I always hold mine. I just dont give them the option, i can go somewhere else if they dont like it. I know you are sad, I hope it passes soon. |

I don't mean to alarm you, but at Sissy's last vaccination a few weeks ago, my vet said recent studies report that most reactions occur from inflammation at the injection site - which can be caused by a too small needle needing to be forced or by wriggling. If Maggie doesn't settle down after 1/2 a baby aspirin, I would take her back in while the vet is still open and have her thoroughly checked....... I hope she is just sore and nothing more serious. Please keep us posted. |
