we have a problem maggie got 2 shots today...distemper and rabies. both were given in her bottom...which I have never seen but I suppose it is fairly normal. I guess it has to be given in the muscle?? anyway, this was done about an hour and a half ago and she is just freaking out. screaming massively if anything touches her bottom. even sitting down, she cries. picking her up,..she screams. she is walking funny. i called the vet and they said that she wiggled a lot during the shots and that she is probably just very sore and to watch her. to call if it gets worse. is this normal? it is just breaking my heart...my poor puppy is scared and hurting and i really can't hold her without hurting her. she is just staring at me like "why aren't you making me feel better" but i just dont know what to do. everytime i pick her up, she screams. and when she is sitting in my lap, she is crying. i know with my daughter, i would give her pain medicine when she got shots...is there something to give to dogs to help? any advice is greatly appreciated!! |
Jewels cried after she got her 3rd set of shots too. I gave her a 1/2 of a baby asprin |
1/2 a baby aspirin should help a lot. I can't remember how often to give it... maybe every 8 hours if she still needs it? I would ask the vet. |
This happened to Zoey....I called the vet and they said to give her some liquid baby tylenol and if she was not better in the morning to call. So I did, and she was back to normal the next morning. I gave her some tylenol and then wrapped her in a blanky and held her all night long. It worked! |
POOR BABY !!!! my vet sent me home with baby asprin after shots and I can't stand thinking of any puppy in pain like that - Try the vet and they can tell you how much to give according to her weight |
My breeder told me to only allow one shot at a time. Especially rabies. She must be so sore, poor baby. I would tell the vet next time to only give one shot. |
thanks so much for the advice. i will ask them in just a minute... i am really hoping she is not in pain in the morning..she is going to get groomed in the morning...she will not want to do it if she is still hurting :( |

Call your vet there is a pain med they can give her. we had this problem with boo once and they said they could give him pain meds. Also hen you get shots ask them to gin=ve them some meds befor the shot it will help with the pain later we did this and haven't had a prob since. |
She will most likely be fine by tomrrow. Jewels was okay by the next day |
I always gave the baby asprin, would stay away from Tylenol, I was told it was dangerous for dogs. |
poor baby, I'd call the vet for advice. Every time we get shots from the vets, we usually come home with a sheet of 'after care' instructions. Did you get anything? |
Poor baby:( Yes I think some baby tylenol & a fice fluffy blanket wrapped in moms arms will help. Keep us posted. Did you not go in with her? I wondered since you say they told you she wiggled alot. Sometimes the people they have holding the pets are not very experienced plus the pet is scared because they dont know them. I always hold mine. I just dont give them the option, i can go somewhere else if they dont like it. I know you are sad, I hope it passes soon. |

I don't mean to alarm you, but at Sissy's last vaccination a few weeks ago, my vet said recent studies report that most reactions occur from inflammation at the injection site - which can be caused by a too small needle needing to be forced or by wriggling. If Maggie doesn't settle down after 1/2 a baby aspirin, I would take her back in while the vet is still open and have her thoroughly checked....... I hope she is just sore and nothing more serious. Please keep us posted. |
Can your vet give you a pain killer for her? my little guy did the same thing when he got a shot in the butt... he cried and wanted to sit on my lap all night, but I couldn't touch him bc hed scream! I called the vet and went back to pick up some pain killer liquid meds. She'll probably be fine tomorrow, but today she is just really sore! oh yeah, one other thing, when my dex got his first round of vaccs by me (so technically 2nd round since the breeder gave them a round) my vet did them one at a time, and I went in the office 3x that week with him just for a min to get him a vac bc he was too small and my vet was afraid to give them all at once. Well that worked out good but he was sore and screamed and cried! I took him back in Nov and he got his 3rd round of vacs, well he's bigger now so the vet gave him both at one visit thinking he'd be fine this time and sent me home with pain meds since hes a little baby! haha he ended up having an allergic reaction to the shots. I didnt have to take him in but his swelled up shut and he had hives all over his little body! I was a nervous wreck but childrens benedryl worked to get rid of it! Just to let you know ... I don't know if its true but if your baby is sensative now, have your vet do the next round as 2 seperate shots on 2 seperate days. Makes it easier on these poor tiny ones! |

I agree! I always like to be there with the vet. They should be able to do simple things like shots in front of us...:p |
I have a little liquid pain med left over from the surgeries my boys have had, and I always give it to them after vaccinations. They do cry when the area is touched and need an evening of TLC. But your Maggie's reactions sounds extreme to me. I'd head for the vets... Good luck. Rhonda |
well, after talking to the vet again, they told me some baby asprin should help but if not, to bring her in. I gave it to her and about an hour later, I picked her up and rubbed her tush and she seems to be feeling better. she didn't scream this time. She is resting now..I have her in her travel bag here at work and she seems peaceful. But if she seems too sensitive later on, she will get taken straight to the vet. I was in there when they did the shots, but I have a huge phobia of needles and could not watch. I know she said she was being wiggly buy I didn't realize that it would cause problems like this or I would have held her myself. I will now better next time :) thanks again for all of your support. I will keep you posted if anything changes :) |

I am so very sorry that Maggie has a sore bottom. :( It is so distressing when they yelp in pain. Glad to hear that the baby asprin helped. Sending hugs :ghug: |
Brissy got her 2nd shots today and she didn't move. I am a nurse so this stuff doesn't bother me. She slept for about 3 hours after and right now she is playing with her toys. Just jumping all over the place. Hurray!!!! I am glad your baby is feeling better. I breaks our heart to see them hurting. |
So sorry about the sore bottom. I agree with the idea of always holding them yourself. It's easier on the little guys that way. If she's still crying in another hour or so, I'd take her in for a check and some pain meds. |
well, i just woke her up to brush her and me brusing her bottom didn't bother her so I think all is well :) anybody want to volunteer to brush her for me? :D |
shots Vaccinations are not given in the muscle. I am a vet tech and do this every day. Please do not give dogs tylonal. Just give her 1/2 of a plain baby asperine and she should be fine. Sometimes theyjust get sore from the shots, Some of mine do and some don't! Just depends on the dog!!! Hope this helps put your mind at ease. |
