| Help - we're having accidents daily! I don't understand it - Teddy is eight months old now, and has been potty trained to go inside the house on newspaper in a 3'x3' tray for months. He usually does really well! He'll even go downstairs by himself to go potty in the right place. We always praise him big-time with a treat and "Good boy!" when he does it in his tray, and he does get scolded when we catch him going where he shouldn't. The past week or two Teddy has had accidents on a daily basis - sometimes twice a day. He'll be ten feet from his tray, in the kitchen with me, and just crouch down and empty his bladder! He gets scolded, placed on his paper ... I mean, I'm sure he understands what to do and what not to do. So why all the accidents? It's peeing and pooping, and he'll do it right in front of us! Is it because he wants more attention? Or because it's freezing cold out and he doesn't get to go outside like he used to? (We live in Minnesota and it's literally -7 today - much too cold for yorkies!) Please help! I don't know why this is happening!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey, at 5 1/2 months, was trained to go on trays also. I know he knows to go on them, but all of a sudden he stopped. We have been taking him outside regularly and he's doing real well on that, but when he needs to go in the house he won't use the trays. I tried taking a pad out of the tray, and he will use that occasionally, but still has "accidents". I noticed that you say you use newspaper; Joey would never go if there is any colored ink on the paper, only black and white. I often put newspaper on top of pee pad because he would only use pee pad once otherwise. I'm sure the freezing cold has something to do with it. I think dogs really prefer going outside, but it's like once I started outside training; the pee pads just weren't good enough for him. Nancy |
