One of my sons raised pits for a couple of years. He had a male, very intelligent, who was well trained and behaved. This dog never had a problem until one day my DIL's cat escaped from the house. Samson killed the cat with 2 shakes. I could never imagine Samson killing anything, he was raised as a pet, but I was wrong and I believe it's in the genes of the pb.

My son no longer raises pits. He gave it up when he and my DIL decided to try to have children......Thank God!!

ok after reading this thread i also would like to add something
i had a chow for a year and he was fine with my family members. but anyone outside my household he would have attacked if he had a chance. and because of this i couldn't keep him. the breed was band from my neighborhood. i couldn't walk him or anything. but he was the sweetest dog... with the family. he was an indoor dog but lived outside during the day. he seemed to prefer it out there. i think he thought he could better protect us there. some teens used to cut through my yard ... lets just say they go around now! ;) but we did not teach him to do that he just was very protective.

my MIL has a poodle/ maltese mix... he is a small dog... he bite my niece once for no apparent reason. just attacked her. so... small dogs attack too.

why do people allow others opinions irritate them so that they retaliate with comments. if you don't agree with something someone says say so... but if you feel they were rude about so what! ya'll get heated on here sometimes. dang! its ok for them to say what they say they way they wanna say it just like its ok for you. just let it go. chill ya'll. woo woo woo :D

I don't know if I all the way agree with them being innately vicious. I know that many Pitbulls are, but I wonder if that is in the breeding and raising? Mental issues in the dog that have been carried down through generations? I always have had mixed feelings, because I think there are some beautiful Pits around. Then again, I don't know if I would feel that comfortable with them being around my Yorkie. We, as humans, know not to provoke a dog, especially a Pit. I don't know if our little Yorkie babies will know not to. If they make the Pit mad, we all know who will lose that fight.

Hey V! I agree with you and with alot of what others have posted...I'm not sure if it's all of mass but around where I live you can't get homeowners insurance if you have a Pit..and alot of people with Rotties have a very high insurance rate on their homes. And like you ....I nearly have a heart attack if I see a pit. I know these poor dogs have gotten a bad rap and I KNEW what was going to happen when this thread was posted! This type of thread(among some others) seem to bring out the worst in people...However...everyone here is entitled to their opinion and nobody here should be rude to anyone. If this breed is the "sweetest" dog then why are there so many attacks? I know alot has to do with the owners but I do not believe that this is just the owners fault and lack of training...these dogs have been bred for years to fight...Just like our little furbabies were bred for ratting...even though they haven't ratted in years look what happens when they see a squirel or chipmunk. IMO...I could never just one...they just make me very nervous.
The breeder I bought the girls from also breeds Rotties....I love the breed..she has one female that stays in the house with the Yorkies...she is the sweetest dog you could meet..then their are those in the pens that would rip you apart if they got loose...Would I ever own one??? I don't know..even though I love the breed they (like the Pits) are a very strong muscular dog that could do alot of damage..Personally...I feel they shouldn't allow Pit breeding and "this is MY OPINION!" Now....no jumping on me!

I can understand any dog being protective in their yards - but it's different than one who breaks out of his yard and attacks - and when you said small dogs attack too - they can and do - but the chance of someone being killed or severly injured is pretty slim. That's why pitts are so scary - they ARE strong and can take down a man in seconds. They also go for the throat - small dogs go for the ankles or whatever is in front of their little short selves...:p

It might work but what if it didn't? I personally wouldn't take the chance. I would NEVER let Brutus near a pit or a very large dog anyway and I don't care how "socialized" and "sweet" they were. You read to many bad stories about them. I don't even think they're an attractive breed and no offense to anyone but with so many dog breeds to choose from why choose a dog with such a bad reputation?

And if you get the pit and keep it outside would you then let your yorkie near it? Sounds like an accident waiting to happen in my opinion.

i don't think they were rude in how they said it. i would have said the same thing the same way. you can't bite peoples head off for feeling the way they do. and even if they are stating their opinion why not listen to what they are saying rather than how they are saying it. i'm just saying

One news report said the pit that attacked the little 5 year old girl and killed her just the other day was frightened by fireworks. You can't control something like that.

I think just about any breed of dog may bite -- the difference comes when one leaves a scratch or tiny puncture and one rips the face up or the jugular out. This is a subject that will always have two sides. People who have always been around them will always extol their virtues and those who know of or have been moved by a child's death or disfigurement will think them too dangerous. I would never be able to live with myself if my choice in a dog wound up costing an innocent child their life. I won't ever take that chance.

I think you (not you personally but in general) can state your opinion without being rude or sarcastic or disrespectful to someone elses post. Plus to understand "what" they are saying a post has to actually make sense. :confused:

Get ready cause I am jumping in this feet first:p I have a GSD(German Shepherd) & 4 little yorkies(1 morkie) but I can tell you that Max is the sweetest dog in town, my biggest concern is he is so big he likes jump and uses his paws to play, he is only a 10 month old 110lb puppy, so NO I will not let him play with the little ones, he could hurt them really bad not meaning too..Max is well behaved he has been in doggie training camp for over a month and is very much under control, but they are dogs and like to play just like my yorkies use there mouths and paws to play...So he doesn't get to play with them yet...I am hoping when he is older he will get all of his "puppy playing" out and just chill around them, but we will see..and YES Max stays outside most of the time and I have a problem with people stay why have him if you going to keep him out, Well for the record He is the one that wants to be outside most of the time... I try to get him in alot and he rather be outside...Off my little box....I would say be very careful.....:)

Look I know that I was going to have DIFFERENT oppinions and I was OPEN to hear ALL of them thats WHY I POST. I am not getting rude with anyone so therefore your post is IRRELEVANT.....why are you bashing me saying that I should of known that I would get all kind of answers. I KNEW THAT this is an OPEN FORUM...I appreciate everyone who replies back and the only thing I wrote back in saying was that I think a dog can have a GREAT life in the backyard and not all dogs are meant for the HOUSE..and THATS MY OPINION and that was IT!
