Micro-Chips? I'm sure there must be some information about this somewhere on the wide world of the internet, but I can only seem to find vague pages. The micro-chip that they put in dogs, so that they can be returned to owners? Does anyone know really how that works? And, my boyfriend and I are planning on moving out of the area soon, so...how do you change the information if it's already implanted in your dog? Also, I'm afraid if Monster gets lose, someone will just keep him, how does anyone have any way of knowing if he has a chip? I'm just curious because we have a vet appointment on Teusday, and I want to know what I'm asking for regarding this chip-thing. I also don't really trust this vet, I feel like he'll try to sell me anything. So, if anyone knows anything or has any helpful websites that I must've missed, I'd appreciate it! Thanks! |
My golden retriever is chipped. After my sister's dog died, I gave Amber to her. When she took Amber to her first vet appointment, my information came up on the chip scan. The vet's office called me to see if I knew this person had my dog. I think it would be good for recovery purposes. |
Both of my boyz are microchipped and I'm glad I've had it done. Of course, if your dog gets out and someone picks him up you can never be assured that they will try to find the rightful owner but the microchip will help if they take him in somewhere to be scanned. The chip is like a grain of rice, it's injected into the skin around the shoulder blade and stays there. You get a paper to fill out and send into the registration company and also a small slip of paper that has the dog's number printed on it for your records. You also get a tag for your dog to wear with a toll free number for people to call, they give the number on the tag and they will tell them who the dog belongs to. If you move you can change your information through the company so everything is kept up to date. I know it's not a 100% guarantee but it makes me feel a little better knowing my boyz chipped. |

I got Venus microchipped Tuesday when I got her spayed. Cost me 30 bucks to do this. I think when I mail the paperwork back in with her information on it, will cost another 18 or so. They give you a tag to put on your dog. Also, if you loose your dog, and someone tries to look for the owner, they can scan the microchip, and find you. Their phone # on the tag they give you is 666-736-4324. Their chip # is also on the tag. I've only been here since August, but have seen several come here that found a yorkie, and they have checked for microchip, and nothing. Or microchip had an old address. Have also seen too many loose their dogs, with no microchip. I suppose if you need to change your address, you call that phone # I put above. To me its worth it! Least if someone honest finds her, there are much better chances of me getting her back. |

I forgot to add there are 2 types of micro chips AVID and Home Again. Not sure one is universal, I'm not sure which one. |

It was on the news this morning, that some womans dog ended up in Chicago, she isn't sure how, and the dog was microchipped so they reunited them. If you move, you need to contact the registry and they will change your information, also if you were to sell the dog. The microchip does not carry your information, it is just like a bar code and when it is scanned it brings up your information from a data base. |

I my black lab and both my cats chipped and i'll tell ya my lab has gotten out so much but we always get a call from the pound saying we have your dog here lol it really is worth the investment because most of the time they will get picked up by animal control also if someone does steal the dog when they go to the vet sometimes they do scan them so it's better to be safer than sorry. i haven't got Peeka's done yet but i will have it done soon. |

Diesel doesn't run loose. As for sneaking out of the house... Well thats not a big deal. When we let him out to go pee we just open the door and let him go. I walk out with him and when he is finished he comes and stands beside me. I live in the county on a mountain so I don't have to worry about city streets.I know that some dogs will run if given the chance. Diesel isn't like this. I see no point in getting the chip. If he was the type of dog that would run just given the chance then I MIGHT would think about it. I also don't worry about someone stealing him. He is never left alone outside because of the Hawks in the area. I don't leave him in the car alone either. Everyone has to do what they feel is right. There is no right and wrong answer. |

Joey's so cute I worry about dognapping. I'm getting him chipped when I have him neutered. Nancy |
One good thing about the micro chips are that if for some odd reason your dog gets stolen, You can prove that it does belong to you if you do find it. If some one takes your dog and is discovered it's your word against theirs. In court they won't put you and the theif on opposite ends of the room and have you each call the dog and give him to whomever the dog goes to. Microchipping or tatooing is the easiest way to identify. |

Every Shelter in the US has a micro-chip scanners and can detect chips of all brands. All my dogs have AVID chips. AVID And Home Again are the big names out there. So god forbid if you dog gets out and loses it's collar the chances are much higher that your dog will be returned to you. With out an I.D or chip you may never see your dog again. I think every dog should be required to be micro-chipped. I bet that would cut down on the numbers of dogs that people dump by their owners. Also there is a GPS collar that is on the market. It will broadcast it's location to your cell phone...e-mail. etc The two major problems that I see with it are that #1 They are very bulky collars. #2 If someone is stealing your dog I am sure they would remove the collar. So even if you decide to go that route, I would still get a Micro-chip as they cannot be removed. |
Here is an article on the GPS Collar. http://www.forbes.com/business/fyi/2005/0407/069.html |
Tony is chipped My boy is chipped, I wouldn't have it any other way. The shelter in Elgin, IL does it for $18. http://www.wftv.com/news/10543880/detail.html read that and your mind will change! If the vet feels one, they will check it, or they should. And if that doesn't match the people who are there, they call on it. I wouldn't have it any other way. I am getting my cat's done in the spring. Jillian |
I had Bailey micro-chipped last year when I had her spayed. We have moved since so I just called the 1-800 number for Home Again and they updated all the information. I never received a tag from them but if your dog is wearing a tag with the micro-chip number on it, can't anybody who finds or steals your dog change the information? I did it for my piece of mind. Michele & Bailey:aimeeyork plus another one soon.....:D |
