My friends little 3 yo has severe asthma and bad alergies, it only takes the slightist thing to set of an attack, and she has to be rushed to hospital and put on steriods for maybe a week. I no my friend feels safe when she is doing her shopping when she has her daughter with her. I no she wouldnt be to happy to see people moaning because they cant take there pets with them everywere. On the disabled thing, com on let common sense preveil. Just leave the babies at home. I can run around the supermarket so quick in and out in 5 and be back to mine in no time |

It is very disturbing that people blatantly LIE to take advantage of a system that was put in place for the benefit of a group of people who truly require the assistance of a dog all because they can't stand to leave Fifi at home and think the they are above the rules. I wish people WERE required to show proof when asked by store owners! I bet it would put a stop to the LIARS who use that as their cover. It's no different from someone who is perfectly able bodied parking in a handicap spot when they don't need it. I don't know why stores forbid from coming in, but it's not my place to say. Rules are rules and they aren't my rules to set. Maybe it is because people are allergic or even deathly afraid of animals, or because the store owner is afraid of a mess. I know that I have seen the ER several times because of my husband's extreme allergies to cats. I would hate to think that I caused that for someone else because I just had to sneak my dog into Target with me. (And yes, I realize people are allergic to perfume and hairspray and they can't avoid that blah blah blah, please spare that lecture.) I guess no matter how many times the subject comes up, the "I don't care I'm gonna do what I want and take my dog with me anyway because the rules don't apply to me" attitude is still a shock and enough to get my blood pressure up. (Maybe I need a service dog for that...) :yeahthat: |
I agree with you, to an extent, however my best friend is severely allergic to bees, however we can't exactly ban bees, can we? She carries an epi-pen with her at all times, and knows what to do in case of an emergency. I don't condone taking pets in places where they are specifically prohibited, however I do like taking my "fur-baby" with me places when I can, especially since she's all alone for 50+ hours per week while I'm working. I think you all have very valid points, and it is very true, If I had a large dog I wouldn't take her, but it would be because I couldn't take her, yorkies are much easier to carry along, and Yorkies are my breed of choice, so I'm invoking my right to carry my "personal property" with me as much as I can! I hope I haven't stepped on any toes....or paws! |
Darn it, I mentioned the perfume and hairspray, but left out bees. (I'm allergic to spray deodorant and Gain detergent.) Somehow, I KNEW something like that would get thrown in there as justification. I understand what you mean, but it's comparing apples and oranges really. Dogs in stores can be controled and prevented...bees can't. |

As you say we can hardly ban bees. We can ban dogs from public places. And it doesnt matter what size a dog is if people are allergic they are allergic. Dont get me wrong I also enjoy bringing my dogs places they are allowed, but people who are allergic 1 way or another no not to go into those places. I realy dont understand the laws in America invoking peoples right to carry personal property, but I for 1 would not be selfish enough to put someones life in risk just to invoke my rights. I also dont want to step in anyones toes, but i have seen my friends little 1 at her worst and its not a pretty site. I think this is a very interesting post though.:) |

Thanks for sharing. Your situation is EXACTLY what this law is for! If having your baby with you helps you function in a more "normal" (hate that word) way, then by all means, please do it. It could change your life, from the sound of it! Best, Ann |
i just wish i could take my baby everywhere with me... she does keep me content, i just love to breath in her smell on her neck... she keeps me calm! |
It kills me how nasty people can be about this. The dogs are 'so cute' when you're out walking, but it's like as soon as they infiltrate "society" all courtesy goes away!! Robert is the service dog I'm currently training and he has tons of gear on and so do I. I've got paperwork that I carry with me ALL the time, and people STILL feel the need to ASK if he's a service dog...as if all the gear is just fake, and I have a uniform that I just wear because it looks nice!! And people aren't nice, they're always ALWAYS rude. I can count on my fingers how many nice people I've encountered. Every one of these employees and companies received a letter of appreciation from me, as well as a letter to the manager or employer saying what a great employee so-and-so was. Likewise, all the crappy places have had to deal with my wrath of anger and my lecture that I give when people start yelling. It's ridiculous. I don't understand why people can't ask. I have to say that when I add my yorkie, I'm going to try to take her everywhere in her carrier (not ever opening it in the store) but out of respect for the real service dogs out there, I would never try to pass her off as a necessity or make a stink about her not being allowed in someplace. The real service dogs, whether they're big or small or for whatever reason, are the life savers of many people out there, and if any of them go through the crap that I go through as a trainer, I'd hate to think of contributing to everyone's paranoia about dogs in the store. |
I have severe allergies to cats, and allergies to dogs as well as asthma. I'm on preventative meds because that is my choice and the way that i am able to own my furbabies comfortably. I don't think that being allergic should be used as a main reason of concern for animals in stores. Most people that own animals have enough dog/cat hair on them to trigger attacks for extremely sensitive people *just* as easily as an actual dog near them.. believe me I know :). Just today I was in a fleece hoodie and realized how many puppy hairs I had attached to me! If I wasn't on medicine, I'd be a total sick mess. Not condoning either side of the situation :) just wanted to throw that out there :) |
I too have Service Dogs and I have dogs trained as Therapy Dogs. If you want to fly with your dogs in the cabin, you may be asked to show that the dogs are registered as Service dogs. A dog can be your therapy dog but in many places that is not enough. My dogs all have certifications that I carry with me when I have the dogs in public. You're right they can't ask what is "wrong" with you, but they can ask what service your dog provides--and they can deny you access if the dog is not a legitimate, certified, with ID service dog. Take your dogs with you if you must, but don't lie about them being service or therapy dogs; it is hard enough to get them legitimately certified. And if you don't have the supporting data, you could get in trouble with the ADA if someone wanted to file a complaint. |
When I posted my comment about allergies and asthma I really though I was enlightening people who honestly did not know that sneaking thier dogs into a public place that does not allow animals could endanger someone's health. I thought that kindness would prevail and people would see that it is nice to make other people sick if one can avoid it. I am surprised that some still argue that they are somehow entitiled to break the rules and will do it anyway. I don't think someone should have to inject myself with a potentially dangerous drug (epi-pen) everytime someone wants thier little dog with them. Not everyone with allergies has one and they are for anaphalaxis, not asthma. And, no I don't get sick from hair on people's clothing, I know very few who do. And just because we can't "ban" or avoid ALL dangers does not mean we have to allow anything and everything either. Why can't people just be nice and considerate? Why make someone ill if you can avoid it? And since we are on the subject, tone down the perfumes and please stop smoking in public too. BE kind. I understand some people have legitimate "service" dogs...still I question why one person's "right" to have a dog with them always trumps another person's right to breath. However these dogs are obvious and people can leave the store or area as soon as they see them-a dog hidden in a carrier is just unkind and unfair. I wonder if people just don't understand how serious and life threatening an asthma attack is? It is both painful and terribly frightening. Try cutting off YOUR air for a few minutes and see how you feel...people die from asthma attacks. Again, please just try to think of others, be courteous and kind, Show some compassion for those with all types of handicaps and illnesses, but don't sneak your animals in where they aren't allowed. |
I just got kicked off of a military installation for driving in with the pups in the car, just to pick someone up for lunch. I have done this many times before but this time a huge guard came out and yelled at me "no dogs on the compound". What a jerk. There was no military housing here (which I think would allow dogs), just offices and they were just little Yorkies, IN THE CAR. They weren't hurting anything. I checked it out and yes this is a rule, no dogs on the compound. But he didn't have to be so ignorant about it. I can't believe it. No dogs in your car???? |
do you know how much dog and cat hair is on my clothes when i leave the house all i have to do is shake around and there would be more hair flying around them a dog closed in a stroller or bag this is a never ending argument theres shedding therpy and service dogs what if someone really allergic bumps into me in the store should i not be allowed in the store anymore we should ban people with pets that would help lol |
