Why don’t we start a movement to get a law passed? As long a pet is enclosed in carrier; it can be allowed anywhere!!! (I really need to go somewhere besides dollar store.)

Sounds like a visit to the doctor may get me a perscription & the proof would be in all the past visits I had for depression that I no longer need. Thank God for Yorkies & Beer, lol. Can I get a Amen! I know of someone who did that (for depression). Also someone who has their yorkie for panic attacks as service dogs. Talk with your doctor and have him/her write a letter. Also there are places you can buy the patches and stuff to put on their clothes that say they are a service dog.

My dogs are registered service dogs for health reasons. It was simple to register them. I trained them at home and then I hired a professional trainer for a few sessions to further advance their training. I've never had a problem bringing them with me when I need them. Sometimes I do get stares but no one can deny me or them access anywhere -- it's the law.

Once when I was on a plane, a stewardess was VERY rude to me and embarrassed me in front of the other passengers because of my dogs. I said in a loud voice and in front of everyone, what's your name? She told me and then I told her immediately after we land, I am going to file an official complaint against you for harassing me. Well after that she shut right up because she knew that she could get into SERIOUS trouble for that. It's AGAINST THE LAW to harass a person with a service animal because basically they are considered handicapped and the laws regarding that are very serious.

I don't have a physical problem (not blind and not missing any limbs) -- I have vertigo. But regardless if the person can visibly SEE your handicap or not, they must still treat you with respect. If I were a blind woman with a seeing eye dog, I doubt very much that woman would have been rude to me! But because I'm a young 25 year old girl, she probably thought I was ridiculous or lying … plus, when you see a cute Yorkie and Maltese as a service animal, you may find it hard to believe (since most people have German Shepherds, Labs or Golden Retrievers as service animals). But believe it or not, many people are now starting to using smaller dogs as service animals because they are more easy to travel with.

Federal Law

If you have a SERVICE DOG by definition, not a Therapy Dog, then you legally-federally-can take them anywhere w/ you.
You do not need to have any special certification that your dog has passed any standardized tests in order to become a "Service Dog". While there are certifications out there (No the CGC and the TDI are not one of them, although they are nice to have and help demonstrate the nature of the dog), again you do not have to become certified.
All you really need is a well behaved dog that you can handle w/ minimal control in public and in weird situations that you normally would experience when out in public-ANYWHERE YOU YOURSELF WOULD GO-and some forms of identification declaring him as a service dog so that the populous knows. Further it is a nice added touch to have a doctor's note w/ you at all times stating what your condition is (maybe you have anxiety in public and take a dog rather than medication; maybe you're recovering from surgery...maybe " "), but that's NOT neccessary even, just nice to have in case a store owner or airline really contests you. By law you do not have to respond to their questions regarding your neccessity of having a service dog-i.e. what your handicap may be.
So, there you have it. Those are some loose terms, huh? Trust me, a lot is being done to try and change this. And if you do "pose" as a service dog, please don't ruin it for the rest of us that actually train them or use them out of neccessity. Make sure that your dog is properly behaved in public (no jumping;barking;pulling;lunging;snaping;growling;h olds it's bowel and urine when needed and so on.) and has proper identification. Service Dogs are often not allowed to be petted when in public also. Keep this in mind. They're not Therapy Dogs to the public, they are Service Dogs to you. They're pets +.

Im not saying that lucky should be allowed wherever( although i would love it) but employees should have some tact when asking someone to leave!!!! let me know what u think!!!

I've heard the same thing about it being easy.. and unfortunely I'm sure some people abuse the right to have a service dog.

As for dogs taking 'everything,' some people ruin it for everyone else. Although I will say, I personally wouldn't want dogs to be allowed in some places (grocery stores, restaraunts, etc.) :thumbdown

You’re not the first person to have a bad experience at Target. I’ve heard of other YTers dealing with incredibly rude Target employees. I got angry just reading about yours. I’m sorry that happened to you.

The thing with Target though, is I don’t think they have a nation wide store policy in place. I’ve carried Ginger in once when she was a pup and had no problems and just the other day I took her in her stroller. The security officer on duty stopped me on the way out for what I was sure to be a scolding, but no, he just wanted to get a peak at the cute puppy he had heard about from the sales associates. So…go figure. Maybe out west there is a greater acceptance to dogs?

But yes, I think that would be cool if we were able to take our pets everywhere. They’re so small. Can’t society make a little room? Lol

I went to a marshall's a few monthes ago and a women had her toy poodle in a little stroller that had an open top and not once was she asked to leave. I thought that maybe they hadn't seen the pup but she was up at the register and they didn't say anything. A few weeks later at the same Marshall's a women and her little pup that looked like a pitbull (it looked only about 12 weeks od probably not the most healthy thing for the lil pup) they didnt say anything she just walked around with him in the carriage from the store. (there was a blanket under him.) But I think dogs should be allowed everywhere even if there not service dogs.

irishawk 11-28-2006 04:51 PM

I'm pretty sure Target DOES have a national policy on dogs. Someone on YT emailed their corporate awhile ago and asked what the policty was. Sadly, it was no dogs. =( If I could bring my dog into Target I'd spend soooo much money. LOL.

rachelsyorkie 11-28-2006 09:24 PM

I wonder how much revenue Target & other stores bring in for the sales on pesky pet supplies?? That lady would have got a ear full from me. Stupid husbands & them making us remain tactful, lol. I think I will schedule a appointment with my Dr & see where that gets me. I am so happy when I'm with my lil girl, but worry so much when I leave her home or in the car. Worse fear fire:(
