Wanna buy from a petstore? How persuasive! Quote:

      good post and great time of year to do this...i hate how true this is in so many cases it is ....but pet stores are only in the sale of puppies for PROFIT. They do NOT save any dogs from mills - they help KEEP Mills in business and are a huge part of the percentage of dogs that are shipped out every week or day - They want the cutest most needy looking puppies so people will feel bad and buy them on the spot. |
I don't know if or cry. boohoo hee hee boohoo |
OMG! I thought that was a real ad until i read down a few paragraphs! |
I saw it on Puppymillrescue.com This site is soo heartbreaking. I was reading the pest shop stories and it's really terrible. If anyone is interested in reading up on puppymills, and how petstores really work (some of these stories are from pet-store employees) then it's a really interesting site. |
 As someone that unfortunately bought from a pet store (I knew better, hubby woulnd't listen, grrr! ) I can attest to the "almost dead" part. We just about lost her:( NOW he says he'll listen:rolleyes: I can't understand how these people can sleep at night, knowing what they do hurts so many:( |
I did not like it.. it gave me the creeps nothing against you ...the truth hurts..and i know someone will buy from a pet store |
:( Chewy came froma a pet store, and he's healthy. I am not thrilled with thread. |
Ima Shyster! LOL!!! |

i know alot of people whos pet shop dogs are healthy, I don't know any one's who are sick... Not to encourage people to buy from them, but it just is not true that they all get sick when they come from a pet shop. the pet shop here bathes them, grooms them, puts dogs together in the same crate to play (Big crate) they are clean. and all seem healthy. I know not all are his way but I know not all pet shops are as bad as some of you would like to think... they puppy mills thing is probably true even though they tell me it isn't. But I still believe these little ones need a loving home. |
My Kallie originally came from a pet store because the first owners thought she was soooooooooo darling and cute..........then along came baby and out went the dog.:( .....But she is with us now and we have had no problems in the two years we have had her. :) But, I would not buy from a petstore.........maybe from an individual that's not a BYB or directly from a breeder. Don't have to make that decision now, I have two sweetie pies. |
Your pet shop must be the exception to the rule, and for that, I'm thankful for you and Chewy:love: I wasn't as lucky myself, unfortunately, but Luna is doing much better now and we probably saved her life. I hate to think what could have happened to her if someone with less Yorkie knowledge (not that I'm an expert or anything) had purchased her. I wish all pet stores treated their animals nicely, but it all comes down to the almighty dollar to most of them. I know that people will still buy from pet stores, it's just a fact of life. It doesn't make us bad people, and YES, these animals also need love and would probably just be euthanized if not bought quickly enough:cry: |
i took my son for trick or treating to the mall the pet store gave out candy and every employee had a puppy in there arms saying this puppy is for sale you can take him home today and all the kids said mom can i im just happy my son does not speak very well he is 2 and i heard him he said puppy home i said what i do not know what your talking about lets go i think people like pet stores cause they have a pay plan take puppy now pay later |
Great thread, I hope some can learn about the horrors of buying petstore puppies but at times its like banging your head against the wall. Maybe some of the puppies are healthy but that does not justify the thousands suffering in mills to put those puppies in the store. |
I jut read the story about Emmy on that web site. That poor little thing. What a fighter she is. Those picturers of when they first rescued her are unbelievable. How could anyone keep a poor dog in that condition and think nothing of it. |
I can't believe that thread It sounds like a mill but it sounds so bad it makes me sick. |

Like Lunasmom said, you are one of the lucky ones. Reputabable breeders do their best to decrease genetic disease and defects in pups. Puppy mills don't. They don't care, and they put these dogs through torture. Think of what your furbaby's dam's life is like. Chances are, she's not living a good life. Why continue with treating dogs like this? Please check out this website though, and learn more. I really don't see why you are "not thrilled with thread". I'm not trying to offend anyone, and yes some people buy from petstores when they dont know (some people buy from petstores because they just don't care). So are you not thrilled with the fact that people are trying to help these poor puppymill dogs out or what? |

It's sarcasm regarding sales from puppymills. I don't know if you got that... |

but in the bigger scheme of things... it's really good to have internet information about the reality of the Pet Stores because not all people are as lucky as you.....I personally know 3 different people in REAL life who bought at a pet store (1 of them bought a puppy at a Flea Market) - ALL 3 lost the puppies to parvo....THREE sales - three deaths. Pet Stores really are huge buyers from mills. It's just a fact the mills ship puppies all over the country. One of my pet peeves is Pet Land - now that's a totally heartless pet store and one I wish would be banned from selling dogs altogether.... IF we had better laws I think maybe people wouldn't be so passionate ....but we don't, so we're stuck with just trying to boycott/warn about the dangers of purchasing a dog at a pet store - not only do people pay big bucks for small breed dogs - the medical history is very questionable - not to mention the mom back at the mill who is totally forgotten but for those who have a happy healthy dog there's nothing to be ashamed of - We all learn as we go & You have an adorable little guy.... Back when my husband bought Tessa for me - he went to the place he got his 1st 2 cockers and little did I know 12 years ago - I was in a PUPPY MILL   so I've been there....I so remember how fast I ran out of there with her ...especially when there was talk of putting her down because of her underbite. All I can say is the smell and the noise of all those puppies in a row had me crying .....I could HEAR them in my sleep for months after. There is nothing - and I mean NOTHING acceptable about mass breeding and the conditions of most mills - which is where Pet Stores buy the dogs.... So these threads aren't aimed to those who bought from them - it's just a way to TRY to educate the public before they buy ...how that cute puppy ended up in a pet store... |
thanks for this link. i just sent it to everyone i know |

There are two sides to this topic and I see both points....but I am frustrated that some people think, and pretty much say... ALL pet stores sell puppy mill dogs. Maybe most do ... but the FACT is you have no idea where they get their dogs because you are not going to the place where the pups came from to check it out! More then likely yes it is a puppy mill but you really don't knowfor SURE... Yet you talk like you do! Also some people talk as if all dogs from pet shops will get sick and either need tons of money to get them well, or their pet will die at a young age. Yet many puppies live a full life as a loving pet and never get sick or die at young age... A few owners on YT have talked about this from experience. They are talking from FACT! I'm sure some pet store dogs do get sick...But so do dogs from breeders. I know my pup probably came from a puppy mill. I know heMAY get sick and need more care and cost more, or maybe even die...I can't even bare to think any more on that. I know that with any pet there is no predicting how long you will have them ... some run away some get hurt, and some get sick. So since none of us know how long a pet will live FOR SURE, Can't we try to agree that these little fur babies...no matter where they come from are the most wonderful little babies and we are all so lucky to have them. You know, there will not be a point where every one here agrees completely on this matter... I see now that not every one will understand where I am coming from or others that have their babies from pet stores. And it is hurtful when people are mean or judgmental about it. But I look at this differently from some of you (Maybe all of you) I feel I saved Chewy from where he was... He deserved a good home and I fell in love with him. I have a different view is all. I won't try to change any ones mind. But I think it's ok to have my own opinion on this and hope I'm not making any enemies here... IF you read back through some of these posts, people who would save a pet store pup are made to feel like they are WRONG. I don't know if I believe there is a right or wrong answer here... I think different people have different views and they should all be respected. At 46 years old I am tired of people trying to tell me what to think, how to act, and who I am. I know how I feel and I am fine with the person I am. I'm not a bad person if I buy from a pet store. I'm not a better person if I buy from a breeder. I would buy a pup from where ever, if I saw one I wanted to save...a good breeder is ideal but I would do what ever to save a little one and make a loving home for it. I'm sorry if this offends any one ... it's not meant to. But I will not change my thoughts or feelings. I'm not mad or anything. I just wish there was a freedom and respect to let people be who they are on this issue! |

I had a puppy die that I bought from a pet store. I had him a week. I spent 900.00 on the dog and 500.00 in vet bills. Plus a broken heart. He had an parasite in his intestines and it was too much for him to fight. The sad thing is I took him for the puppy check and the vet didn't catch it. If he had the puppy would have lived. I know the pain. I don't think people are bashing those who have bought from a pet store but,are warning others not to. I hate to talk about my little dog I lost but, I don't want others to go through it. I hadn't even planned on getting a dog. We walked in to the pet store to get food for our bird. We saw him and fell in love. He brought so much joy to our lives for 4 days. On the fifth day I woke up and he wouldn't eat. I watched him for a while and took my child to school. When I came back he was bumping into walls. I called the vet. They said bring him in We think he has gone blind. On the way there he had a seizure. They said he was dehydrated and they were going to give him fluids and run some test. I went to pick him up the next morning and they said they had given him medicine for a parasite and fluids and he would be fine. I took him home. I hand feed him and carried him around for a few hours. he just didn't seem fine to me. I sat him down for 2 minutes to grab an apple and when I went back to get him he was dead. I am crying now and it happened 3 years ago. I know that not all puppies are that sick that come from pet stores. I know that people get pet store puppy's all the time and they are fine. I know that feeling of seeing that adorable puppy and wanting to give it a good home. It is just a shame that they can't be trusted. It is a shame that most of their puppies come from puppy mills. It is a shame that so many people loss the sweet little pup they thought they were giving a good home. Sorry this is so long. I just thought I would tell my story. |

and Connie k....THAT IS SO HEARTBREAKING - i can't imagine what you went thru....I'm sorry |
Thanks V. I just thought a personal story might help. |

And Connie thank you for telling us your story...I'm so sorry you had to go through it... i know there are many heart breaking stories on this topic... I am hoping chewy stays healthy.... but if he doesn't I will know he had love in his life and we did our best to make him a happy healthy very loved baby... Your baby was only with you a very short time, but you can at least know he knew what love felt like... God Bless;) |
Thanks Brook. I don't regret that I brought buster home. I do regret that I was not more knowledgable about pet stores and bad vets. I hate that my little guy died. I love that little booger. He was a norfolk terrier and if I hadn't of gotten him he probably would have died alone and suffered even more. I am so glad your dog is doing great I hope he has a long healthy life. I agree that you rescued him. I only wish all pups coming from the stores were as lucky. I know we all have different veiws on it. I understand the point if there is no demand there will be no supply. I also understand that they need a good home too. I don't know how it will ever end unless there is a goverment crack down. I am glad when I see a puppy leave a pet store. I am glad to know they won't have to live in that cage any longer and that someone is going to love them. I also say a little prayer as i see them leave one for the owner and one for the pet. |
Sounds about right to me. My, it does to a rather nice job of making Pet Store and mills sound ridiculous, doesn't it? |
that is very say, but true and i try not to think about it..... |
