What's with Gia's skin ???? The other week I decided to go to this upscale pet store in my area & while I was there I notice Paul Mitchell had shampoo for dogs (if anyone doesn't know he also has human hair products & their usually quite costly but good). So i decided to pick Gia up some shampoo & conditioner the total came to 30 bucks:eek:  but I thought I was doing the right thing (using better shampoo & conditioner would help her coat) Well, that same night I came home & washed her, her coat was so pretty & shiny I was real happy with the results:) :) Well, about two days later Gia starts to scratch & scratch. Something told me to get a look at her scalp. Once I looked I also screamed to the top of my lungs !!!!! She had red bumps and dandruff all throughout her scalp So I gave her another bath using the regular shampoo & conditioner I had used before thinking it may clam things down, I even put neosporin on her scalp. It helped for that night but it was back to scratching the next day So I went to PETCO & brought dandruff shampoo, the shampoo helped with her dandruff but she still had the red bumps & still was scratching Yesterday I noticed she still was scratching but now she begin to whine & when I put her in my arms her body was so warm & her skin was so inflamed, I called the vet today they don't have an appointment available until tom morning (that's to long of a wait, my baby is in pain) The receptionist suggested I go back to PETCO & get some tea tree spray to help Gia stop scratching, well it's work but the bumps are still there (it smells horrible too) Hopefully when I go to the vet tom they will make her all better. She really hasn't been playing much just sleeping (she still is eating though). i notice her ears are real red in the inside & her eyes rims are also red. i think she had an allergic reaction to the shampoo I hope she will be better tom. I feel so bad, I threw the shampoo & conditioner out. |
Oh, the poor thing. It actually made me feel sickish reading this. She has had an allergic reation to it apparently. Sheesh, I'd hate to have to wait until tomorrow also. In the meantime, ask your vet about giving her a half a baby aspirin. It really should be safe for her. I'd also take the PM product back with a picture of what happened to Gia and demand a full refund. Some Yorkies are more sensitive than others. I do hope Gia is feeling better SOON...please keep us updated. |
Hi I would say alergy also Take The (PM) back they should give you a full refund . I know that if you buy Profeshional products from a salon they are fully refundable. Also ask the vet if you can give benadril. I feel so bad for your baby, I hope she is better soon. |

I really don't like the receptionist at me vet, but I love the doctor. I know she could have squeezed Gia in today, I called first thing in the morning (they opened at 8am I called by 8:03am) she's just a snob. I told her I was willing to wait for a few hours if I had to, that's when she said take her to PETCO & get some tree tea spray, we don't like people & their pets hanging around in the office. I'm really considering taking her to the ER (even though it's more $$$$) & finding another vet I hate to see my baby in pain & there's nothing I can do, I'm about to call back & see about the aspirin thing (thanks for suggesting that) She looks so sad right now, she's sleeping in my lap as I type & Gia is not a lap pup (so that's how I know she isn't feeling well) |

It's called John Paul who is the co-founder of Paul Mitchell I picked up the oatmeal conditioning rinse & calming moisturizing shampoo |

Some people just shouldn't be allowed to deal with the public! |
I would call another vet. I have always been able to get into my vets the same day for emergencies. It sounds like an allergic reaction to me too |
I'm looking for another vet now, i just gave her a tea tree cool bath & she screamed the whole time I just got off the phone with another vet , she hasa 12:40 appointment today :D :D :D |
:( You know what I do is never call a vet in advance I only call if I think it can wait if not I just walk in lol they take me but I get charged 15 dollars more for emergency visit but it's all worth it once you know your baby will be okay. |
Your poor little baby! I'm glad you were able to get an appt at another vet - it definitely sounds like an allergic reaction. Hope they can get her all fixed up. |
Gosh, I hope your baby will get better soon! I asked my vet awhile back about an allergic reaction and what I should do in the event of one (Max gets into everything when he goes outside, and we've got fire ants and scorpions on occasion, and black widows here) and he told me that of course, I would take him to the vet, but that I could give him some Benadryl....diphenhydramine, if you want the generic stuff. He told me to use the pediatric liquid and then the amount is determined by weight. So I went to the drugstore and got a bottle of it, just to have on hand in case of emergency. I think it's a good idea to have a little emergency kit for them, so ask the vet the dose for your dog and then write it down and put it on the bottle's label, so you won't forget. Also, I read that a baking soda and water paste can help inflammations and irritations and Milk of Magnesia (only I'd be worried that the dog might lick it and then, have other problems:confused: ). Good luck with your little girl. Let us know how she's doing! |
Please let us know what the vet says. So sorry to hear the little one feels so awful. |
Me again....checking to see how Gia is. I HATE when people at a vets office act snotty (or anywhere else for that matter)! Obviously if you HAVE to call there you are already not having a great day. I really REALLY think you should call, speak to the vet and tell him how she acted. A snotty receptionist did this to my Mom in the middle of a crises and she ended up loosing some puppies. They might not care about your pet, but YOU sure do. Also, the vet will care VERY much that he may have lost a client...and probably would have squeezed your girl in if he'd known. |
Poor baby. I hope she feels better soon. It’s a good thing she has such a good Mom to take care of her. Maybe that receptionist was having a bad day? Or is she always like that? She should have recommended the tree tea spray right away. I hate when you have to coax people into doing their jobs. |
Oh my Gosh !!!! Gia has demodex mite the doctor was explaining it to me, but to be honest I really don't know what it is (i'm about to read up on it). I'm so hurt, I broke down in the vet office I had to leave her at the vet until 5pm today she has to get special baths & take antibiotics. She will have to go for those special baths every two weeks until it clears up. worst case scenario her hair is going to have to be shaved off   . But as long as she's alight I don't care The vet said it was good I brought her in, I'm going to go there from now on I was suppose to be getting Gia's brother this Friday but the vet told me to hold off because he could end up with the same problem because they are from the same litter If anyone knows more about this demodex mite please let me know what to expect & what i should do |
well....I'm going to go research it right now myself! So it isn't from the new shampoo? |

No not all from the shampoo, this is something hereditary |
Chachi had mites. They are really hard to get rid of. No wonder she had sores and was in so much pain. When Chachi had it he lost all the hair on his back and had open wounds all over. He had nto be dipped in a real strong solution 6 times every ten days. He only ended up going to 5 dips because they were making him sick. It sounds like they are doing the same thing to her. After the dips he was fine and his hair grew back and he didnt have any more problems with them. My vet said that all dogs have mites but when a dogs immune system is down they can multiply and that is when there are problems. I hope she is better soon. You will see improvement after a couple of the dips |
I just did a quick search on it too. Glad to hear Chachi got all better. It did say that a healthy dog getting this usually has an underlying problem...something that has brought the immune system down. I feel so bad for you and Gia. I will pray that she has a total recovery with no other problems. Please keep us updated. |

I'm so worried , i don't know why this happened to her. What did I do wrong? Should I still get her brother Friday? |

I did read that it is not hereditary. Sometimes wording makes it sound this way. It does say that if an animal gets this and has a hard time getting rid of it that it should not be bred. It says that breeding a dog while it has this will make it much worse. I'm no professional, that's for sure...I just started reading about it myself. The site I went to had info. then a nice Q/A section below that was very helpful in understanding it. |
I have two yorkies and My vet never expressed any concern over the other one getting mites from Chachi so I think you are fine getting the new puppy. You didnt do anything wrong. Chachi got his after having an allergic reaction to a flea bite. They can get them that simply |
I just don't want her to DIE !!! The doctor said the same thing about underlying problems. I'm so scared for her |

I honestly don't think right now would be a good time to get another one. I would wait till little Gia is all better and you find that she has a mild case that she can become immune to herself. It does say once they have it (a normal case), then they become immune to it and should never get it again. YOU didn't do anything wrong...it just happens. Don't beat yourself up, you didn't do it. However, maybe the different shampoo set of the reaction and alerted you to the problem that already existed....a blessing in disguise. |
Get better, Gia. Hugs to both of you. |

Some years ago I used a new dematting spray on my Liana. Over time she was coughing and choking but was so gradual I couldn't pinpoint what she was reacting to. After a few Vet visits then realizing the new thing in the house was the spray, I threw it out bathed her a couple of times and she was fine ever since. She had actually reached the point of difficulty in breathing. Scared me to death. |
I'm so sorry to hear this, I hope Gia feels better real soon. http://www.thepetcenter.com/exa/dem.html |
I just got Gia from the vet. My poor Baby, she looks so miserable. She didn't even want to give kisses when I got her. I think some of the meds to stop the scratching has made her sleepy she's just laying around. I gave her some food & she ate & then it was time for more meds Now she's just laying in my bed sleep, i have to take her back for another deep on the 1st :( :( |
Awe, the poor little baby. Sounds like holding her won\'t even comfort her right now. Let her sleep as much as possible. I hope she gets a miracle recovery. She is definetly in my thoughts. The reason I thought right now wouldn\'t be a good time to get another one is because of Gia and how worried you will be about her. She is going to need a lot of your attention. However, you know what is best for you and your little girl. Please know I am wishing you the very best. |
