| Rt sided weakness after a dental cleaning! Hi there, just wanting to share our recent scare with our 6 yr old yorkie Spencer. I have tried to post this in the health concerns area of the forum twice now but it will not show up there, so if all of a sudden if this post is in 3 different areas, forgive me. One week ago today Spencer had some routine dental cleaning and 2 extractions done. That evening he was very unstable and always falling over, still bright and alert, so I just thought it was the effects of the anesthetic. The next morning when he was the same I called the vet who wanted to see him right away. I thought he may be having a stroke! Apparently strokes are very rare in dogs though. She did an neurological exam, blood and xrays and started him on IV steroids and observed him over night.I was a mess! By morning he was maybe sl better and I was able to take him home with the undertanding I would keep him safe and give him steroid injections twice a day. She was not sure but think sit may have been something called FCE(fibrocartilaginous embolism)which can happen randomly, often after an injury but not always. After a couple days he became very lethargic and no energy at all, alot of panting and increased thirst and urination...all side effects of the medication. It was so aweful to watch him be so sick and just lay around like a sick child. But still a good appetite and using the bathroom well, except he had to sort of squat like a female as when he lifted his leg he would fall over! Anyhow the rt sided weakness has greatly improved and he now just has a sl limp! She has put him on the pill form of steroid in a weining dose now, thank goodness! Anyhow just wanted to ask if anyone had ever experienced anything like this with their dog before. I really don't want to blame the dental cleaning or anesthetic but I can honestly say I would be very scared to have it done again. Thanks for listening, Shauna |
