Some helpful tips as I just had my little girl spayed: Have a syringe (you can get from vet) around to syringe fluid into her mouth as you will find that day 1, she will be so drowsy and in such pain that she'll just want to lay down all day. She will be very wobbly during first 2 days. Ours peed standing up during fist 2 days, I'm guessing b/c she couldn't squat. I gave her baby food for day one so no chewing was required due to teeth pulling. Read the ingredients in the back if you go this route. I spoon fed her just like a baby every 1/2 hour or so. day 2, I completely wet her dry dog kibble and it was soft enough to chew. I also gave her canned dog food (Innova) that was all soft. Onsies as you mentioned helped a lot. She will probably pee through her pads. Oh, our vet said not to walk her first day or two so we carried her on to pee pads to do her business. If you can, purchase pain meds from the vet as it was so necessary for our girl. Be prepared and sleep with her if you an b/c you can hear her cry when she's in pain. It's def. very nerve wrecking and it almost broke our heart the first night she came home. Be prepared that she will be very groggy, in pain, and very bed ridden ( I was not used to that since our girl is very active and bouncy) They recover so fast. Stitches were all healed after 1 week, day 4, she was back to her happy peppy self!! She went back on her dry kibble after about 8-9 days! Good luck!! Jennie |
Coco-Ming was spayed on tuesday of this week, and i was a nervous wreck. I picked her up the same day ( about 4:30pm). Once we got home, she slept in my bed for four to five hour intervals. I was not given any pain meds, from my vet, and coco-ming did not appear to need them. She did not cry or make any strange sounds. When she was awake, she was lethargic, and could barely keep her eyes open. That day I gave her Nurti-cal. The day after, in the late afternoon, she was more alert, and able to eat a regular diet, and do her business as usual. The second day after the surgery she was back to her old self. i took off three days from work so I could be with her. She is doing great now. I can't wait to get the staples out of her stomach (ouch!!!). |
Thanks for the advice Sassy and Becca! We're home now-have been for 6 hours or so. A friend came over to help calm my nerves :) Emma is so tired, and hasn't moved from her blanket since I brought her home. She even stayed in her bag with the zipper down so that she could peek out on her way home-usually she tries to jump out if I leave the side zipper down! She's drinking water and licking ice cubes, and has eaten 2-3 tablespoons of wet "chunks & gravy" food from a spoon. I was also going to try peanut butter-her favorite treat- but wasn't sure if that was ok yet or not. (It's the organic kind...any idea?) She stood for a few minutes, and is now resting peacefully on her side. She perked up when my husband (went out of town) and friend came and left-as though she wanted to greet and bid them goodbye! She hasn't done any "business" yet-how long did it take your babies to pee and poo after surgery? I'm worried-I haven't seen her go since 7 am. And-forgot to mention the vet did send home pain meds-but she can't have any until tomorrow morning. She also has a vet check for her incision at 10:30 AM to make sure she's all sewn up and is doing well. Thanks again everyone for your support and advice! |
OK, silly question here, but: what are "Onesies"? I'm having Abbie spayed and teeth extracted on the 2nd, so this seems something I'll need? |

They come in cute patterns and colors, and with cute sayings on them-Emma has one that says "future princess" and "mommy's girl", and others with hearts and ladybugs on them! They wash well, and are really nice because I can snap them around her little butt. And...her little tiny tail is SO cute in the onesie-it sometimes pokes up when she's happy. I love onesie butts! :) |
Look who's feeling better! 2 Attachment(s) :) We went back to the vet this morning to get her incision checked-swelling is almost all the way down, and she's getting more awake and playful as the day goes on!..She's eating, drinking, and pottying like normal--now I just have to find a way to keep her from jumping on and off the couch! Pics: 1: But MOM, I just woke up, and I had a rough day yesterday! 2: Can't I PLEASE go outside and play? Thanks again to everyone for your support! Attachment 71674 Attachment 71675 |
