Emma's getting spayed tomorrow!

Hi everyone, I'm pretty new here too. Emma is getting spayed tomorrow, and I'm a little nervous. I know it's the best thing to do for her since I'm not going to breed her and she's the right age and the right size (6 months and JUST 5 pounds)..but still! I love my little Emma-Lou so much, and I feel bad for putting her through surgery. Plus, she's getting the baby teeth that didn't fall out pulled out too!I know some of you have spayed your little girl babies-anything that will help me not feel so anxious about this?

We've cleared the weekend, and we're going to watch movies and just hang out-my husband's going out of town so it will just be us girls. I bought her some soft food to eat until her teeth heal, and she likes wearing her onesies, so I think she'll be fine not chewing on her stitches with those on too. (We've been trying the onesies as PJ's, and she LOVES them!) I have baby aspirin ready to go...Is there anything else any of you have found helpful after coming home from a spay?

Rae Rae 09-28-2006 07:42 PM

I'm interested to see responses because Rocky is getting nuetered soon. We also use the onseys as PJ's...they look soo cute in them! I didn't know about getting him soft food though for the teeth pulling, I didn't even think of that!

I'm also interested in finding out info. Angel is getting spayed on Mon. and is having her remaining baby teeth pulled. She'll be 9 months old on Oct. 6, and she's about 3 lb. 4 or 5 oz. We bought a premie onesie for her, which is still too big for her. She's not used to outfits so hopefully it'll be ok. Let us know how Emma's surgery goes.

Connie 09-28-2006 09:14 PM

We all get nervous taking our babies in for surgery! Hugs to you! Sounds as if you are well prepared. The only suggestion I might add is be sure they send her home with pain meds. When I had Maddie spayed, they gave me pain meds for her and she did really well. Recently I read on here where a little one was sent home with no pain meds and cried nonstop all through the night. Poor little things shouldn't have to endure pain like that when there's medicine to help.

Good luck and best wishes with the surgery! Emma is the same size as Maddie when she had her surgery. I used onesie's on Maddie too...they are great...plus they look so darling in them. Let us know how Emma is doing! I'll say a prayer for her!

I know how you feel. Maddie had to have 2 hernias removed plus got spayed. I was so scared. She wasnt even 3lbs either, so that made me even more scared. Make sure the use the gas, and make sure to have preblood work done first. I'm sure she will be just fine. But its natural to worry. I'll keep you guys in my prayers. Maddie was really sore when she got home. its was sad.:(

Cali had to be spayed while in heat due to a possible intestinal obstruction and liver biopsies and she was very tired for a few days and then she perked right up. The onsies work great! Let us know how all your babies are doing after surgery. Good luck

jager 09-29-2006 05:30 AM

you see like you have everything covered...Lady had the onsies on for the first few days until she learned how to get them off...lol...then on with the cone...she did great when I brought her home...just keep her quiet that night and let her rest, shes probably just going to want to sleep...I know its hard to put put this little ones though this, I was a wreck with Lady, and felt horrible, but its whats best for them and belive me she won't hold it against you. Try to relax (believe me I know its hard) everything will be ok. Please keep us updated on Emma

Pipersmommy 09-29-2006 07:05 AM

Piper is also getting spayed today. Along with micro-chipping & baby teeth removed. I'm still nervous even thought I went through the 7 months ago with Misha. It is never easy.

Suzy 09-29-2006 09:38 AM

I was a wreck when I dropped her off this morning. I hardly slept last night, and was nervous this morning-which made Emma nervous! There are 3 doctors in the group-one we like, one I've never met, and the other Emma doesn't like. That doctor just seems to like big, boy dogs and is much more gruff-not exactly what I need for a little prissy girl puppy that wears pink bows and onesies! The good doc that I had requested wasn't there today-and the gal who scheduled the surgery didn't tell me that ahead of time. I burst into tears. I said I DIDN'T want the one doctor doing the surgery-but also didn't want to reschedule since I have this weekend all set up to be home with her, and won't have a free weekend for at least another month. They assured me the doctor I haven't met LOVES little dogs-has 3 herself-and would do a great job. A friend/coworker of mine takes her mini schnauzer to her, and likes her very much, so I figured that would be ok. I-through tears-agreed after lots of discussion.

I had the pre-op bloodwork done, and we went through all the meds and everything that she would have. I left a onesie for her because I don't want one of those awful head collars on her :(

They called just a little bit ago-she's out of surgery and doing well, just staring to wake up! I feel so much better! They told me to call back later this afternoon to see how she is. I'll let you all know when I hear more! Thank you all for your comments and encouragement!

Connie 09-29-2006 10:03 AM

I'm so glad she's got her surgery behind her and it won't be long before she's feeling great again! Do you get to pick her up today? I hope so! It's so much easier on them to be home with the ones that love them and in a familiar place! Maddie sends get well kisses to darling little Emma!

Suzy 09-29-2006 12:01 PM

I should be able to pick her up tonight. I called again a little while ago, and she was getting her temperature taken. They said that she was pretty wide awake-which I think is a good thing. I want to bring my poor baby home! It's really hard to concentrate here at work-which is why I keep checking this forum :)

Martie 09-29-2006 12:16 PM

I am also looking at this thread carefully. I am going to have my furbabies spayed. I have been checking out different vets in my area (Quad Cities) and the prices are so varied. Anywhere from 175 to over 500.... its very confusing but now I know a few more questions to ask when I call for estimates. I really don't want to put my babies thru this but I also know I must be a responsible pet owner.

vainchick5 09-29-2006 12:19 PM

Aww I remember that nervous feeling, of waiting for the clock to hit 430 for me to go pick up my baby. I'm glad Emma is doing well, and the onesie works great! I use it on Coco. Except just be careful when she needs to go potty. If she goes in her onesie you don't want the pee pee touching the stitches, so be sure to monitor her as she goes potty. What I did is unclip the onesie, and bring it around the back and clip it around her back until she went potty, so i wasn't taking the onesie off and on constantly.

I bet you had a sigh of relief when you heard she is doing well!! I know when it was Alfie and Lottie's time I worried so much ,but at last its all over and done with now just give her some TLC for the next few days.

That's funny-I'm calling right now at 3:58 since they said call at 4! I'm just worried sick. They just said I have to wait another hour :( and then I can go and get her! :)

Thanks again for all your kind and reassuring words, everyone! It really helped me get through the day!

Some helpful tips as I just had my little girl spayed:

Have a syringe (you can get from vet) around to syringe fluid into her mouth as you will find that day 1, she will be so drowsy and in such pain that she'll just want to lay down all day. She will be very wobbly during first 2 days. Ours peed standing up during fist 2 days, I'm guessing b/c she couldn't squat. I gave her baby food for day one so no chewing was required due to teeth pulling. Read the ingredients in the back if you go this route. I spoon fed her just like a baby every 1/2 hour or so. day 2, I completely wet her dry dog kibble and it was soft enough to chew. I also gave her canned dog food (Innova) that was all soft. Onsies as you mentioned helped a lot. She will probably pee through her pads. Oh, our vet said not to walk her first day or two so we carried her on to pee pads to do her business. If you can, purchase pain meds from the vet as it was so necessary for our girl. Be prepared and sleep with her if you an b/c you can hear her cry when she's in pain. It's def. very nerve wrecking and it almost broke our heart the first night she came home. Be prepared that she will be very groggy, in pain, and very bed ridden ( I was not used to that since our girl is very active and bouncy) They recover so fast. Stitches were all healed after 1 week, day 4, she was back to her happy peppy self!! She went back on her dry kibble after about 8-9 days! Good luck!!

Coco-Ming was spayed on tuesday of this week, and i was a nervous wreck. I picked her up the same day ( about 4:30pm). Once we got home, she slept in my bed for four to five hour intervals. I was not given any pain meds, from my vet, and coco-ming did not appear to need them. She did not cry or make any strange sounds. When she was awake, she was lethargic, and could barely keep her eyes open. That day I gave her Nurti-cal. The day after, in the late afternoon, she was more alert, and able to eat a regular diet, and do her business as usual. The second day after the surgery she was back to her old self. i took off three days from work so I could be with her. She is doing great now. I can't wait to get the staples out of her stomach (ouch!!!).

Thanks for the advice Sassy and Becca!

We're home now-have been for 6 hours or so. A friend came over to help calm my nerves :) Emma is so tired, and hasn't moved from her blanket since I brought her home. She even stayed in her bag with the zipper down so that she could peek out on her way home-usually she tries to jump out if I leave the side zipper down!

She's drinking water and licking ice cubes, and has eaten 2-3 tablespoons of wet "chunks & gravy" food from a spoon. I was also going to try peanut butter-her favorite treat- but wasn't sure if that was ok yet or not. (It's the organic kind...any idea?) She stood for a few minutes, and is now resting peacefully on her side. She perked up when my husband (went out of town) and friend came and left-as though she wanted to greet and bid them goodbye!

She hasn't done any "business" yet-how long did it take your babies to pee and poo after surgery? I'm worried-I haven't seen her go since 7 am.

And-forgot to mention the vet did send home pain meds-but she can't have any until tomorrow morning. She also has a vet check for her incision at 10:30 AM to make sure she's all sewn up and is doing well.

Thanks again everyone for your support and advice!

OK, silly question here, but: what are "Onesies"? I'm having Abbie spayed and teeth extracted on the 2nd, so this seems something I'll need?

"Onesies" are those one-piece underwear/t-shirt combos that babies wear...like a bodysuit. They stay tucked in and cover the diaper. I have found them VERY helpful with Emma-even this far into it! First of all-she loves clothes that make her feel snuggly, and wears them as PJ's most nights now that it's getting cooler (we're in Iowa). They've also helped protect her incision-both from me accidentally touching it, her chewing it, and from anything rubbing on it. They're really cheap in the baby section at Wal-Mart or Target-you can get 5 for $8-10-not too bad!

They come in cute patterns and colors, and with cute sayings on them-Emma has one that says "future princess" and "mommy's girl", and others with hearts and ladybugs on them!

They wash well, and are really nice because I can snap them around her little butt. And...her little tiny tail is SO cute in the onesie-it sometimes pokes up when she's happy. I love onesie butts! :)

:) We went back to the vet this morning to get her incision checked-swelling is almost all the way down, and she's getting more awake and playful as the day goes on!..She's eating, drinking, and pottying like normal--now I just have to find a way to keep her from jumping on and off the couch!

Pics: 1: But MOM, I just woke up, and I had a rough day yesterday!
2: Can't I PLEASE go outside and play?

Thanks again to everyone for your support!
