Puppy's ears should be standing by...? I am going today to look at another female and was wondering when the ears are 'expected' to be standing? is it 6 wks, 12 wks, 6 months? thanks! |
I am not sure.. I think it all depends on the dog.. My grandparents yorkie will be 1.5 in june and her ears are still down!! Good luck!! |
Some of them never stand. I have heard that if they aren't up by six months it is highly unlikely that they ever will be - of course, there are people who have said their Yorkie's ears stood up after two years - so you just never know. Ask the breeder if the mom and dad's ears were up or if there are any floppy eared dogs in the line. |
... so if i go to look at a 6 week old and the ears are down there is a good chance they will stand...do some stand before 6 weeks? |
In my experience I've see ears go up at various ages. Some as long as 6 months...I keep the ears shaved and tape and tape and tape until I am certain they will stay up.. I have heard of shaving the ears at 2 wks old to make sure the ears are up from the beginning..I ususally shave and tape starting at 5 wks... I wonder what other breeders do to make sure ears are up. Hugs, Irene |
... would any of you personally purchase a puppy with ears still down (this is if you would like them to eventually stand)at 6-8 weeks? How do you encourage ears to stand? I've heard of taping but i am not sure how it is done. *thanks! |
I think 6 weeks is way too young to determine if the yorkies ears are going to stand. Neither of my puppies ears were standing at that age. Jewels is 12 weeks and her ears were up then we went to the vets and they have been down every since. So they can still flop down for various reasons. |
If it were me I would prefer to see the ears up before I commit. Because of the uncertainty at this age the breeder may be willing to refund your deposit if they ears aren't up but the time you are to pick up your puppy. As a breeder, I want to make sure the new puppy parents are happy with the puppy. If a breeder take deposits at an early age they should be flexible IMO. Best wishes, Hugs, Irene |
1 Attachment(s) Maddie's ears were down when I got her and I was glad of that, because I think baby yorkies are adorable with their ears down. I taped her ears when she was a few months old and it didn't take more than once or twice of taping them that they stood up on their own. |
12 weeks? When I purchased my female Abigail, she was only 7 weeks old and her ears were down and floppy. I told her Breeder that I would not get her unless I knew they would stand up, like my male Artie's ears? She assured me that both her Parents ears stood up at all times. She will be 12 weeks on Monday, and both are ears are up. When I got Artie, he was 20 weeks old and his ears were already up. But he has exceptional Breeding, his ears are so small that they look like they have been cropped/cut but they haven't. I think it really depends on their Breeding and their Diet, if there is enough Calcium in it? So the cartilage hardens in their ears to stand upright? But if they are not standing by 6 months? I doubt if they will? It's just a matter of personal preference too! |
Fred's ears were up at 8 weeks. They pretty much stood up by themselves. My breeder shaved his ears at around 6 weeks and when I visted 2 weeks later, they were perky! She told me that if they decide to flop back down, just take my index and thumb finger to massage them and that would most likely make them stand back up again. Just in case, even when they were standing I massaged them while we played around. They have never gone down! I suppose that method works |
it can happen anywhere from six weeks to six months... Funny story my vet told me when he did the final health check on my babies... A lady comes in with an 8 month old Yorkie rather indignant "My yorkies ears wont stand" "obviously the breeder didnt crop them, I need you to do it right away!!" He was very nice to explain breeders DO NOT crop the ears of a Yorkie" she said "Well what can you do to make them stand (in a very sheepish voice)" he said "absolutely nothing, if they are not stand by its unlikely they will." She was so upset she stormed out of the vet without ever turning back! |

:D I dont know I mean they dont stay up for ever  but they come down and up once in a while! So you acually dont know! ;) |
My breeder told me that ears will droop when they are teething. Lily's ears were up, then down. Now one is up and the other is flopping. I think it's adorable!! We lovingly tell her she has a broken ear. |
