Puppy's ears should be standing by...? I am going today to look at another female and was wondering when the ears are 'expected' to be standing? is it 6 wks, 12 wks, 6 months? thanks! |
I am not sure.. I think it all depends on the dog.. My grandparents yorkie will be 1.5 in june and her ears are still down!! Good luck!! |
Some of them never stand. I have heard that if they aren't up by six months it is highly unlikely that they ever will be - of course, there are people who have said their Yorkie's ears stood up after two years - so you just never know. Ask the breeder if the mom and dad's ears were up or if there are any floppy eared dogs in the line. |
... so if i go to look at a 6 week old and the ears are down there is a good chance they will stand...do some stand before 6 weeks? |
In my experience I've see ears go up at various ages. Some as long as 6 months...I keep the ears shaved and tape and tape and tape until I am certain they will stay up.. I have heard of shaving the ears at 2 wks old to make sure the ears are up from the beginning..I ususally shave and tape starting at 5 wks... I wonder what other breeders do to make sure ears are up. Hugs, Irene |
... would any of you personally purchase a puppy with ears still down (this is if you would like them to eventually stand)at 6-8 weeks? How do you encourage ears to stand? I've heard of taping but i am not sure how it is done. *thanks! |
I think 6 weeks is way too young to determine if the yorkies ears are going to stand. Neither of my puppies ears were standing at that age. Jewels is 12 weeks and her ears were up then we went to the vets and they have been down every since. So they can still flop down for various reasons. |
If it were me I would prefer to see the ears up before I commit. Because of the uncertainty at this age the breeder may be willing to refund your deposit if they ears aren't up but the time you are to pick up your puppy. As a breeder, I want to make sure the new puppy parents are happy with the puppy. If a breeder take deposits at an early age they should be flexible IMO. Best wishes, Hugs, Irene |
1 Attachment(s) Maddie's ears were down when I got her and I was glad of that, because I think baby yorkies are adorable with their ears down. I taped her ears when she was a few months old and it didn't take more than once or twice of taping them that they stood up on their own. |
12 weeks? When I purchased my female Abigail, she was only 7 weeks old and her ears were down and floppy. I told her Breeder that I would not get her unless I knew they would stand up, like my male Artie's ears? She assured me that both her Parents ears stood up at all times. She will be 12 weeks on Monday, and both are ears are up. When I got Artie, he was 20 weeks old and his ears were already up. But he has exceptional Breeding, his ears are so small that they look like they have been cropped/cut but they haven't. I think it really depends on their Breeding and their Diet, if there is enough Calcium in it? So the cartilage hardens in their ears to stand upright? But if they are not standing by 6 months? I doubt if they will? It's just a matter of personal preference too! |
Fred's ears were up at 8 weeks. They pretty much stood up by themselves. My breeder shaved his ears at around 6 weeks and when I visted 2 weeks later, they were perky! She told me that if they decide to flop back down, just take my index and thumb finger to massage them and that would most likely make them stand back up again. Just in case, even when they were standing I massaged them while we played around. They have never gone down! I suppose that method works |
it can happen anywhere from six weeks to six months... Funny story my vet told me when he did the final health check on my babies... A lady comes in with an 8 month old Yorkie rather indignant "My yorkies ears wont stand" "obviously the breeder didnt crop them, I need you to do it right away!!" He was very nice to explain breeders DO NOT crop the ears of a Yorkie" she said "Well what can you do to make them stand (in a very sheepish voice)" he said "absolutely nothing, if they are not stand by its unlikely they will." She was so upset she stormed out of the vet without ever turning back! |

:D I dont know I mean they dont stay up for ever  but they come down and up once in a while! So you acually dont know! ;) |
My breeder told me that ears will droop when they are teething. Lily's ears were up, then down. Now one is up and the other is flopping. I think it's adorable!! We lovingly tell her she has a broken ear. |
well which ever female we purchase will be used for showing if she is demmed as show quality and later breeding...does that change anyone's opinion? (btw i did not purchase the female i went to see today..i did not feel she met all the expectations of her price...but she did steal my heart :p ) Are there things a breeder can do in the first 8 weeks to encourage ears to stand or are the things done after that time (messaging/taping)? *thanks |
I start shaving the ears at 4-5 weeks old and taping by about 8 weeks if they are not standing on their own...the larger the ear the more difficult it is to get it to stand. |
if the dam and sire both had floppy ears is it possible the offsprings ears will stand? do you shave the enitre ears? i've heard anywhere from the top 1/3 to the entire ear and was wodnering what you personally take off. |
Yes, knowing you are looking for SHOW quality does change my opinion. If I were looking for a show or breeding quality Yorkie, I wouldn't take one without the ears standing. That's just me. |
shave 1/3 down the ear an inverted v inside and out. If they are not standing on their own, I usually tape three days and then undo for a day if one falls I tape the one falling only. |
They are all so different. Bella's ears were up at 8 weeks when we first picked her out |
If you are looking for show/breeding then it is important to make sure the ears are up. 8 wks is waaay too young to be certain the puppy will meet all the criteria for a show prospect. 6 months and older is when you can be certian of the end result. I am starting to down the long road of showing. I am in the early learning stages. I do have several mentors and they gave me a very good tip when selecting a show prospect Yorkie..it's the 3 fault rule. If the Yorkie you are looking to purchase or hold back from a litter of your own has more than 3 faults then then you should pass. As for showing, if you see 3 faults, the judge will see more. Referring to breeding, more than 3 faults is going to be very challenging to breed out and correct in your lines. Now! what faults can you live with and which ones you can't. IMO that's personal preference. I am talking confirmation faults NOT health big diffrence.. Whew!! So sorry to ramble..I should have warned you guys I am a talker/preacher..ROFL... Good luck in your search! Yorkie hugs, Irene |
Zowie's ears stood up one at a time at around 10 weeks. Bronx ears are down, but I have never shaved his ears. I think he is adorable. I have noticed most people like them up, but it is a distinguishing feature that friends can tell them apart. |
YorkieRini, I'm smiling at your apology for a "long" post. Boy, you should see some of mine, and I'm don't know squat about breeder issues! LOL! I try to stay away from technical questions cause Bo is my first Yorkie but I sure can ramble about other things!! I'd love to spend one day in your household full o' Yorkies!! You're gonna fit in here just fine and its great to have another educated opinion in our illustrious group...Welcome!! Bo's ears don't stand, he's six months now and gonna be full of faults but I never intended to breed or show. I didn't know much about Yorkies when I bought him. I'd always had Schnauzers. My husband didn't want a Yorkie but I pushed it and now he's crazy about Bo. Bo is adorable and I wouldn't change a thing about him. Do I eventually want a smaller Yorkie that will have ears that stand? Yes, I eventually want a small female. But I couldn't love Bo more!! He's my baby puppy and Mommy's boy! Yorkies have the most winning personaity of any dog I've ever seen!! :littleang |
If you are looking for a show quality Yorkie , you should not buy a 6 weeks old puppy . I never see show quality at this age . It must be preferable to buy one of six months or older . |
One of my brothers has one ear up and one down and the other has both down. When I got him, both were up. The brother with both ears down is my sisters favorite. They are cute either way |

The trick for standing ears The trick for standing ears 1st you have to shave the ears with like a beard trimmer shave the inside sides and out on the top to take off the access weight now yoou can get some tampon applicators and inser them in to the ear, use for 3 days with tape and remove if the fall re- tape another 3 days check and make sure that the hair is shaved and the weight is off the ears, they will stand also when the tape is off massage the bottom base of the ears to strong ness in the cartlige area if the tip over re-tape , and use tape that done pull when you take it off use a sports tape the white kind works best! start taping at 3 months vet says !!! :D :D :D :D :D :D |
Shaving is VERY important. There are several ways to tape the ears..Tampon applicators, cutting piece of cardboard to fit the ear and tape it to them, taping them together. The way that works best for ME is folding the ear in half long ways and taping it that way. It's easy and doesn't seem to bother the puppy too much. Not bulky or tempting for the others to grab..ROFL I had a female Yorkie that took until 6 months before her ears would stay up. But persistance paid off..remember to make sure you clean the ears and let air get to them as not to grow bacteria. Hugs, Irene |
Thank you, I will try that.. Oh My God.. she is going to look a sight with tampon cartridges on her ears :) |
