yorkie vs. silky terrier My vet told me my yorkie looked like he might be a silky terrier the other day and it got me thinking. I have Scruffy's papers showing his lineage, but I did get him from a place called Puppies Galore that gets their dogs from breeders. He's 6.2 lbs. and only 5 mo. old which is kinda big for a yorkie. Do you think he's a silky and what is the difference between the two? |

6 lbs is still within yorkie standard. Do you have a picture? Silkies are usually bigger and have longer snouts and bigger heads/faces. I have a friend who has an unmistakable silkie (9-10lbs) with a huge snout and big head with huge floppy ears (he's the sweetest and cutest dog), and she swears she has his lineage and papers, and he has champion bloodlines. I don't want to be mean by disagreeing but he is most definetely a silkie. To me, yorkies and silkies look SO different. Really the only thing they have in common in my view, is their coloring and that they are a small breed. But 6.2 lbs is still considered a yorkie unless he has a long face/snout. Sometimes vets and other people are often confused about the difference. Your baby is loveable either way though :D |

I really have no idea. When I look at him I can't tell if he has a yorkie snout or a silky snout. I've examined pictures of both breeds and cannot come to any conclusions about him. Any other advice on how to find out? |

It is really difficult sometimes to tell the difference. There were those who insisted Buddy was a silky. His papers state Yorkshire Terrier. Yes, he is bigger, bigger head but adorable face and erect ears. Yorkies, like people, do not always look like each other. He has a silky coat, longer body and long legs. He is 13lbs but all Yorkie. He is very strong and muscular but that does not make him a Silky.:) |
HI I was just wondering just how much a silky terrier can weigh. :questione i think i may have one ! Oh well she is still adorable and you can't help but love her. She is 3 months old and already weighs 5.8 pounds... |
She might be just going to be a bigger yorkie. I have a yorkie that is 10 lbs. |
If you do a search, you may be able to turn up a thread here that I remember...someone posted pics of yorkies and silkies, and people tried to guess which is which! Or something like that. Anyway, no, it's not always easy to tell the difference, even if you KNOW what to look for! Silkies are great little terriers in their own right! :) |
