Now I am really confused. Lucy has a silky coat but I don't think she is what you all are calling a "Silky" so, can a Yorkie has a silky coat and not be a "Silky"?

A Silky is a separate breed of dog - A Silky Terrier. A yorkie can have a silky coat or a cottony coat.

Are these full-bred yorkies? This is a pic of my friend's dogs and I wanted to get one but wasnt sure if she has yorkies or silkies and what the difference was. They look a little large in size or are they typical yorkie size and is there any difference in their faces? Please explain.

A friend of mine has a beautiful Silky. If she didn't tell me it was a Silky, I would have thought it was a beautiful Yorkie. After seeing her Silky, I understand why people mistake my 16 lb. Yorkie for a Silky.:D They're both beautiful.

Is mine a Yorkie, or a Silky opinions please she weights 10.5lbs long leg no fat on her body. she is 10mos. I bought her with the option of getting her papers, and I didn't get them. I trimmed her hair on her body twice now.she is very shinny and greasy, baths only last about 2 days then greasy again. what do you all think?

She looks like a Yorkie to me. I have one of each.

So do Yorkies have a little smaller ears then a Silky?? My Silky has a lot bigger ears, and he has papers.

I am just amazed....I brought Guinness for his 1 year check up and he weighs 13.1 pounds. Vet says he looks good but he is a yorkie and I think that silkies weigh about that much do they not? Any thoughts?

Thanks maggiesmom! I'm still unsure.:confused: I think Molly maybe taller than the standard for a Silky. I see a lot of teapot Yorkies that look just like her. But she fits the standard for Silky more than for a Yorkie. I wish there were more distinctive characteristics between the two. Thanks to all that replyed:)

You cannot judge wqhether it is a yorkie or a silky by weight alone. Silky Terriers are a whole different breed than a yorkie and look totally different. If the papers say a yorkie, I would believe them. Yes, there are some unscroupulous breeders who will try to pull one over on you by altering papers or lying to AKC, but on the most part, if the papers say it is a yorkie, I would go by them. You have to remember that ALL breeders do NOT breed within the standard. Some breed 10-15 lb yorkies and will have BIG yorkies, but they still are yorkies. A yorkie's coat can be silky (preferred) or cottony, or even wooly. Those bred within the standard will be up to 7 lbs and have a silky steel blue and gold coat. That does not mean that a yorkie cannot be 2 lbs and have a wooly coat or 16 lbs and have a silver coat. Those who fall into that category are still yorkies, just not within the standard. Doesn't make them better or worse or any less loveable. They are yorkies and deserve to be loved like evvery single yorkie I have seen, big or small, steel blue or silver or black, ears up or down, long hair or short. None of them look exactly alike, but all deserve that love.

My Oscar just turned 4 months old and is already 7 lbs! His papers say he's Yorkie, and I guess my only choice is to believe them/the breeder.

I'm sure the OP will love his/her yorkie even if he's 20 lbs and purple, although it is disconcerting to have people suggest that you were somehow lied to and didn't get what you paid for ... so I understand their concern.

The other day at the dog park this little snot sneered down her nose at Oscar and asked, "He's full-bred Yorkie?! Oh, so did you just get him at a pet store or something? I can only assume this was a thinly-veiled insult or insinuation that he appeared to be something else.

So to those who don't know better and assume yorkies should only weigh .5 lb full grown I say :thumbdown:thumbdown:thumbdown.

You have to remember that the silky came from combining the yorkie and the Australian terrier. The silky as a breed isn't very old and your still going to get alot of variation within the breed. They are usually longer in body, longer in muzzle, with a thinner, straighter coat. If you feel the coat it's more like the feel of an asian's hair, not quite as fine as the yorkie. The breeds resemble each other quite a bit when poorly bred.

I love my dog to pieces I could just eat her up!! I was just wondering what every ones opinions were because I don't have her papers, not even sure there were ever any papers too have. I was offer them but did not want to pay more! Maybe I should of payed for the papers then maybe I wouldn't wondering so much. Thanks again!
