Puupy Mill in PA ???
 
I swear I thought I saw a puppy mill this weekend. We went to Lancaster, Pa to an air show and on the way back I saw what looked like a puppy mill. I saw 2 stacked rows of dogs (long rows).We went by so fast that all I saw on the top of what looked like a barn was kennel. I told my DH that I didn't have any idea that it would have been a boarding kennel. You could see it from the road. We were on interstate 81 south right around Harrisonburg. It was so odd. I even saw people walking around looking at the dogs! Now if I can see this from the road and it was a puppy mill then why hasn't it been shut down? They surely weren't trying to hide anything... How sad!!

They say that a lot are run by the Amish. It really is a shame when you think about it . You would think that for a group that is so religious they would know this is wrong.

What's disgusting is that the Amish look at raising dogs as a cash crop!:mad: Unfortunately, over the last year or two, some Amish have moved in around here. I noticed in an article that was written about them in the newspaper that they DID indeed mention raising dogs. I've been trying to find out if they are raising them and which farm if they are.:cool:

Not to sound harsh... But what you saw is not against the law here.. It really doesn't matter that you saw dogs in cages from the Interstate:( It's not against the law.
Maybe I can explain.
Actually I don't think it is against the law anywhere to have dogs in cages. :p Also ... a dog in a cage does not mean puppymill. What a puppymill is , is a place that raises lots of dogs for cash...AND DOESN"T TAKE CARE OF THEM WELL. This is everything from food to medical care to living conditions. TRUST ME when you see a REAL puppy mill you will darn well KNOW IT. It is overwhelming.:(

I know when I say this .. It always gets people goign but I can't help it. NOT ALL AMISH are horrible. I have met some really nice Amish families here. I have also met some that raise dogs quite nicely . YES I can point out Puppymills run by them... But by others too.

I know the AMISH have a reputation.. But guess what. The Mennonites and regular people have JUST AS MANY puppy mills:eek: I think the Amish just take the rap for all the puppymills for all 3 groups... and it's not really fair

We were on the interstate and I know I saw 2 long rows of cages and I did see dogs in some of them. I also know I saw people looking at them.I can't imagine it would be anything but one...

You have to realize that the Mennonites broke away from the Old World Amish way back when. So they may have a different name but in my eyes they are still Amish. The facr is that in Lancaster there are MANY MANY Amish families. So many that Lancaster is know for being Amish.

LOL... I know.. I live smack dab in the middle of all of it:rolleyes: Actually the Mennonites now are very different in alot of ways. I'll take an AMISH family over a Mennonite family any day

The air show was really fun! It was at the Lancaster airport. They had some crazy nuts doing acrobatics! It was really cool tho. My dh had his digital camera just snapping shots. LOL I think he actually got about 10 good shots out of 94. LOL The planes were moving so fast it was hard for him to get a good shot at times. He just got his private pilots license rently and he loves getting to meet other pilots at these events. I was proud of him tho. he and my daughter saw a Yorkie there and of course my daughter had to stop and love on him. They told my husband that their Yorkie was suppose to be a tea cup . He was actually about 7 or 8 pounds and not a really really small one. Still small enough tho. Anyway my daughter told them we had one and they asked if he was a tea cup. My Dh said nope he is just small. LOL Just goes to show you can teach an old dog new tricks.... LOL LOL

Wow that much difference huh? I just knew they broke away from the old world amish but I never really knew the difference. Let me ask you a question... We saw a LOT of women wearing long dresses in pastel coloring with the little white caps covering their hair. The "husbands" seem to wear what ever they wanted to tho and neither had wedding rings... Are they Amish? Or maybe one of the groups that broke away...

Those are the Mennonites. Bet they had those DANG TENNIS SHOES on too:rolleyes:

You must have went on Saturday to see the airshow. Did you go to the hanger dance Saturday night?

They hold the air show every2 years. they used to hold it EVERY year but said now only every 2 years so they can have the money to make it better that way

You saw a mill.

IN my opinion - any facility that houses dogs OUTSIDE in all the elements are a mill. No dog should have to spend cold winters and hot summers sitting inside a cage with nothing but wire to stand on. :( :(

I could care less if the Amish run them or the Pope (NOT intended to offend anyone) but a Mill is a Mill - there are bad ones....really bad ones - and just plain Evil hell holes.

I wish our country would wake up and act like they care - and I especially mean that about people in power. How hard is it to say ..."THIS IS WRONG"...and put a stop to it ?

Umm, 81 South around Harrisonburg, PA? I'm just trying to picture where you were..could you mean Harrisburg? :rolleyes: If so, it probably wasn't Amish as there are not many near Harrisburg.

Unfortunately, pa is known for puppy mills, and I have seen some in Lancaster, but would be interested in more info on where you were.

Yep they had some kind of odd looking tennis shoes on. No we didn't stay for a dance. I didn't know they had one. It wasn't on the schedule thingy we had. It might have been for the volunteers I'm not sure. We volunteered at a fly-in once and they had a lot of extra perks for us.Oh and yeah we went on Saturday.

I will have to say that the Mennonites that sat right behind us had no manners at all. I was actually kinda shocked.

Yeah thats what I meant Harrisburg. Your are right it probably wasn't the Amish. I don't mean to sound harsh and say all Amish are this way. I just know a LOT are and this is the area we were in. But you are right that wasn't really Amish country at that point. You could see it from 81. We were on 81 south and it was on the right hand side of the road. Hold on, now my husband says it was one 581 west. We were almost to 81. Sorry I cant' give directions to save my life.

jeez V... I didn't say it wasn't:p I just can't really say at all. I do know around here alot of the kennels(like boarding kennels) are like that too. Plus it might even have been a dog auction:mad:

I'm just asking, cuz I'm trying to figure out what you saw. Can't picture anything like that right off the highway...and if it's in my own back yard, I feel pretty strongly about looking into it. I certainly took no offense about the Amish comments, was just trying to help clarify.

Yikes, I really feel for those poor pups!:(

The airshow usually runs Saturday and Sunday. saturday is the better day because they have the actually AIRSHOW and the hanger dance saturday night. You just buy tickets and go in. I never went to the dance myself but I here lots of people go. It is supposed to have music like the old kind from the war and everybody is dancing the old dances

Thats just it I don't know if it was one or not. But I know what I saw just didn't seem right. You would think if it was one it would have been have been reported by now especially since it was in the open. I am just so thankful that I know my baby didn't come from one.

Well, hope it didn't ruin what sounded like an otherwise good trip. I'll be driving down 581 and looking for signs of something suspicious...:rolleyes:

BTW, when we were looking for a pup we stumbled into one of these "puppy mills" in Lancaster:eek:. Nearly broke my heart.

Oh man my husband would have loved that!! He loves big band music! The only problem is that I have no idea how to do those dances!! :D Ginger, I don't mind answering the questions at all so don't worry about it.:) If I can help and let others know about a potenial puppymill thats all I want.

Do you know which one it was.. I mean do you know where you were when yuo saw it?????? To tell the TRUTH.. ALOT of theREALLY big ones do NOT do sales to regular people. They sell to brokers and such.ther atre only actualla few I know of that are BIG that sell to regular people.. pretty sad though because i know a dozen or more of the smaller ones.. which is BAD ENOUGH:mad:

lol....I know you didn't silly - I just threw out my opinion - you know I have a big mouth about mills :p and you're right it could have been something else ...(but I DOUBT IT :p ) & those auctions do suck just as bad :mad:

It probably wasn't one of the big ones, but they had two rooms in the barn. One for small dogs, one for large. In the small dog room they had bins and chicken wire cages full of puppies. Yorkies, silkies, jack russels, schnauzers, shih tzus, etc.... Some cages had 10 +pups in them. Seriously, the way my heart broke I almost brought one home. All I remember is turning right off of 30, seems there is some kind of a sign. I'm sure there are much worse conditions, but this certainly wasn't what I would consider a quality program. Especially not after what I've learned here on Yorkietalk.

HAHAHAH I'm sorry I couldn't help laughing. Yo said You turned right off of 30 and there was a sign....That describes about EVERY exit on 30 which is LONGGGGGGGGG:p
