| ![]() If i am going out for an hour or so.. Layla goes in her crate.... i tell her "crate" she goes in.. gets a treat.. and i don't make a big fuss about leaving.. she cries... every time.. but she quiets down.. this i know because sometimes i'll come home and she is asleep! other times she will still be crying. but i don't make a big fuss when i come home either.. because i don't want to reward her for being upset... she settles down after a few minutes.. then i pay attention to her... In September when i start back at university i will set up a "play pen" for her that i got at PetSmart... i put her crate in there so she has the option of going in it... she cries in there too :P she is a suck! but i have started putting her in for about 30 minutes.. leaving the room.. then coming back.. each time making the duration longer. she is starting to get the idea that i DO in fact come back! but in the begining she would get so upset she would pee or poop.. broke my heart.. but we stuck with it and now it isn't as hard! good luck!!! |

| ![]() Hi! Well we've crated Ginger since day one, and did use it for potty training. She's very comfortable in her crate and even goes in their on her own when she's tired, when I vacuum, or when it's thundering. The dog walker who comes in on days when I'm gone for several hours says that she wants back in her crate right away. When she sees me put her big brother, the beagle-mix in his "room" (the tiled mud room and kitchen) and put up the gate, she usually runs right to her crate and is waiting inside for her treat. (that's the routine when I'm getting ready to leave for awhile) I didn't do anything special to train her, I just always followed the same routine. In the beginning, she cried when she was in her crate (since I used it for pt she was on a really tight schedule, and even had crate time when I was here), but once she figured out I wasn't going to get her (yes I had to leave the room), she learned to settle down. Your little one will get it. Don't feel guilty. The crate is a safe place for him when you are not there.
