I have bi-racial nieces and nephews...and you know what? They are just as beautiful as can be and I couldn't love them more. I am half Mexican and I have adopted a daughter from Guatemala. I LOVE that our family is sort of like a melting pot. :)

In the last few years, the Hispanic culture in Indiana has really increased. Of course I love it...I think Hispanic people are beautiful and come from a really loving family oriented society. But, there are times when people say "these Mexican's this and these Mexican's that." I love pointing out to them that I am half Mexican. I don't like the "Mexican's" comment at all. Why not say "Mexican people, or Mexican men." It's just as racially unacceptable to say "those Mexican's" as it is to say "those Blacks" in my opinion. Oh, and my lease favorite comment is "I have to admit, those Mexican's are really hard workers." As if there is something wrong with that....or that is all "they" are good for? I don't get it at all.

I am already teaching my children to love and appreciate people from all races. When I was a little girl, my mom always bought us a black baby doll, or black Barbie to help us realize that people come in all different shades and to love everyone regardless of the way one looks. I do the same with my daughters. I also tell my son that I don't care who he chooses for a girl friend or wife...black, white, Asian, etc....what matters is what she is like on the inside. If parent's everywhere could just teach love instead of being an example of ignorance and hate, the world would be a much happier place.

I think most everyone of every race has experienced racism at some point in their life. I've never had a rock thrown at me, thank God. I am just sick that you had to go through that and I am really glad you didn't get anymore hurt than you did.

How sad for people who live such little lives that they can't see past the color of their own nose and see the people of the world for what they are....shades of beautiful colors that make us all unique and beautiful.

Jesus teaches us to love our ememies and to pray for those who persecute us. It is a tough example to follow, but it sounds like you have a big enough heart to be able to embrace the idea.

I hope you are feeling better. Just remember...not all people are ignorant and not all people have hate in their hearts. Also remember that there is a higher power and He will make sure we are all held accountable for our actions.

Take care,

Bitsy, I loved your repsonse! It is so true! I loved when you talked about Jesus and how were supposed to love our enemies! Thanks for writing that Bitsy! It is something that everyone should read!

Also, I am so glad that you are teaching your children that people come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, religions, races, etc. It is just too bad that not all parents are like you. Many people from my class are very racist, and I know that this is because of their parents who are also VERY racist. Why can't everyone just accept each other and teach their children to do the same?

I just read this and the first thing I thought, ignorance and racism is not dead. It took 50 years to bring a racist killer to justice in the south and still 6 got away with murder. . We think of racism as being in those states, but it is alive and well(Sorry I do not mean that as good!) all over our wonderful country. I, for one, apologize for the indescribable behavior of those ignorant, unloving, inhuman-beings.
I have wondered if they consider themselves Christian and if so, wonder what they would do if, at the Pearly Gates, St. Peter were black!!!!
Sorry if I have offended anyone with this remark but I have considered this on many occasions.

I don't think racism will ever die because ignorance and stupidity will never die with it.
Being an asian person, my whole life I had to deal with it once. And that was in middle school because someone yelled out to me "Go back to Hong Kong!". I turned around and merely laughed at him because I wasn't even from Hong Kong to begin with. Sometimes, being the age that I am.. I run into a lot of idiots that think they can be funny and call me "Chink" or say "Ching chong". I embrace it because I know I am different and I know I stand out.

Jhordan, I'm sorry about your encounter with such you-know-whats. And I'm glad to hear that Jane is okay and did not get hit with a rock. But, I think at your age you begin to learn these little glitches in society but you also have to understand them. I think you should just ignore people like that and tell yourself that they are taking out THEIR time to acknowledge you and whether it's with a "Hello" or a "F*** you", they are giving that time to you. It's something to laugh about. And you'd have to forgive them because they were raised the wrong way and you weren't.

I feel sorry for these types of people and even though they will never go away, the closest place you can get is to ignore them. :p

So sorry to hear what those A$$ Holes said  . Sounds like those guys where out just to start trouble and you just happened to be there. So sorry!

There's are way to many people on this earth that need to take a good look in the mirror! It sickens me to no end how people can act like that towards other. The sit up on this pedistal as though they are perfect, when in fact THEY are the ones with flaws.

Parents need to also work a little harder to prevent the ignorance that the words is overcome with. To me, kids are getting worse and worse.

Kinda like they say "monkey see monkey do". If they see other (mom, dad, sister, etc) acting like that then they to will follow in those footsteps. Granted its not always the parents fault, but they can do their parent to educate their kids. They need to inform them that what they are doing may seem like a joke to them, but to others it is very hurtful and offensive. Im sure they would feel awful if someone turned the tables and did that to them!

Sorry if I was alittle harsh.

First of all, sweetie I know what you're feeling right now.. I'm asian and it's pretty amazing how uneducated some people are. Even the educated ones ask the silliest questions.... I have been asked if I ate dogs!!!! FOR THE LOVE OF GOD! This offended me the most because I've adored dogs all my life. I have never laid a finger on all of my pets. People would sometimes drag their words trying to speak a lil slower because they think I couldn't comprehend. My English teacher in 10th grade who's Japanese came across a security guard who asked her if she spoke English and was pointing to his ear (picture chris tucker from the movie rush hour). My English teacher said "Young man, I teach English". hah!

It's unfortunate that there is so much racism still prevailent today. I too have many run-in's with racial comments and some people truly don't know it's offensive. (I too have had the do you eat dog questions or do you bury kimchee and how could you eat rotten cabbage comments).
Sad thing is, people don't realize it. When I use to tell my boyfriend of people being racist, sometimes it's not even the comments they make it's how they just stare at you, he'd always say "your being too sensitive". I told him he doesn't know what I'm going through or understand it since it's never happened to him and it's happened to me all my life (he's caucasian) . He never understood it until he was out with my son a few years ago (who is half asian/white) and was playing on playground at McDonalds with some other kids (one kid was getting rough and pushing the other kids around and my son pushed back) when the kids mom yells out to my boyfriend, "you need to get your chinese kid before I get the manager!" My boyfriend was taken back and the only that popped into his head to say to her was "he's not chinese". She literally rolled her eyes and said "whatever!" My boyfriend took my son out of there not because he did anything wrong but to get away from that lady. After that incident, he came home and was like honey I just had a racist experience happen to me and Darion. Fortunately, my son didn't know what went on.
I may be a lil 'sensitive' when people look at me as if inspecting a weird alien creature, or people making dumb comments or questions, but I can only shrug off the dirty looks and try to educate those that asks those off the wall questions.
I hope you know that you are not alone Jhordan and the best way we can get through to those that are ignorant is to not stoop to their level but be a better person than them.
I teach my children that people come in all diff shapes, sizes, colors, religion, etc and that you should never ever dislike a person for their outter appearance but if you don't like them it's cause it's how they treat you and how they are as a person.

I just want to let you know that I feel horrible that you had to go through this..my mother is german but my fathjer is puerto rican and guatemalen..I am light skinned as compared to my brother who is darker then me...many people assume that I am italian until they see my last name...I was told by a prinicipal once at my school that he never realized I was a s***k..(explicitive for a hispanic person)..I was so young and I didn't understand why that was bad???? Needless to sasy my tia went up there and he got into a lot of trouble..but sometimes people will look at me and come up to me and ask is I am "mixed"...I have learned to ignore people and their ignorance..I am too educated to stoop to their level..as my abuelita always said.."I am uneducated and so I have to clean ##### (this wealthy lady) home..they think they are better then me because they have the power and money to command me on what I have to do and the ability to scare me in doing what they say for fear I may lose my job...BUT I do this so that my children and grandchildren can go on to college, become educated, never have to be treated like dirt, and be able to walk with their head up but also know to treat everyone as their brother and sister no matter trheir ignorance." She has since gone back to her country and is very ill....but I remember this as a saying that my mother used to always tell me and that my grandmother used to tell me when I was young. I have since been the first one to go to college and graduate and I will be going onto graduate school...my bf's family is from El Salvador and he too will be the first to graduate college..DON'T LET anyone's ignorance hold you back...and just let their racism make you stronger

That was a great response! You are very wise and it makes me so happy that you are teaching your children values. Many kids of this generation are racist because they weren't taught those important values and some are even encouraged by their parents to be that way. I am sure that your advice will amke Jhordan feel better.

You're so right! My sister mentioned this to me once. Considering where the birth place of Jesus is considered to be, there's a good possiblity that he might not be white. (Sorry if I offend anyone, but it's just a thought)

That's awful! That kind of ignorance makes me mad. And to think of the irony that your parents were in the army to defend these idiots' freedoms- including freedom of speech.

These guys should feel really manly considering that they attacked a young girl by herself- that takes no courage whatsoever. We wouldn't be where we are today as a civilized nation if it weren't for the contributions of many, many "minority" people.

Jhordan, you are a wonderful young girl, and a far better person than anyone who judges someone based on physical attributes.

And if this should ever happen again... be sure to get a license plate number. People like that need to be put in their place.
