Too Old for Puppies? We just returned from vacation. Our yorkie, Sadie, was staying with relatives who have a male yorkie. Wellllll....it appears Sadie was in heat while we were gone and the male yorkie had his way so there's a possibility she is pregnant. Sadie is 8 years old. Is she too old to have puppies for the first time? Any help appreciated.

In my opinion, I think she is too old to be expecting. It might be very hard on her body because she's so old.

It would probably be best to get a vets opinion. You could lose her if she has puppies.

pups Since this happened so recently, you can have her spayed and not take any chances with her health..it may work out, but may not..each year a Yorkie goes unspayed increases her chances of pyrometia..which can be fatal also. Why put up with these negatives each heat when there is a healthy solution. I wish you the best..

Ideally, a dog should not be bred over 5 years of age and most prefer not even then for a first time litter. Megan who belongs to Paddy's Mum is expecting any day now at 9 years old for a first litter. You might want to search her name and read her posts and pm her with any questions. I know she is seeing a vet and can tell you what complications, if any, the vet told her that she may experience.

| I would never follow through on that. I'd take her to the vet and if she is pregnant I would have her spayed. I couldn't risk one of mine that way. I love her too much.

Megan delivered three pups safely today, but it was a long labor at 5 hours. Of course, every pregnancy and delivery is a risk so you have to talk to your vet and make an informed decision. Here's the link to Megan's delivery.http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sho...egan%27s+mummy
