upset and need advice please! Hi everyone, I'm new to this forum. I have a 15 month old male yorkie or so I thought. He's very light in color, silvery on his back although the roots are darkening up and his head and legs are a pale blond, the top of his head is almost white with his ears a darker tan. He weighs just about 6 pounds and his coat is silky but thin, although it is starting to come in thicker. Here's the problem....I just got back from the vet where I dropped him off to have a retained tooth taken out. The woman (tech?) took him back, I heard someone ask her what kind of dog he was, she answered a yorkie and I heard the woman say he's funny looking and probably a mix! They obviously didn't know I heard them so I waited for her to come back and I told her I heard what she said. The woman told me she thought my dog was a mixed breed. I love my dog like he's my child so I don't care what he is, but I paid a thousand dollars for him and his papers say he's a yorkie. She said it's not uncommon for that to happen, so I told the woman that he looked just like other yorkies when he was a puppy, black and tan but at about 6 months old he started really lightening up. She insisted he was a mix of some kind but she would ask the veternarian. Now I'm not sure if I should call the breeder or what I should do. Can anyone give me advice as to how to proceed? |
He sounds like a yorkie! Can you post some pics? |
wow i am so sorry to hear that story. i'm sure you love him unconditionally, but the fact that you may have been scammed is nerve-racking! hhhmmm, i would definitely ask the vet and see what they say. if indeed, the vet concurs.....and says its a mixed breed you SHOULD contact the breeder. i'm not sure what you can really do now, b/c your YORKIE is already 15 months old. but MAYBE....just MAYBE the breeder would be an honest person and tell you upfront if it is a mix. i guess you would demand a few hundred dollars back? i guess the most realistic thing i can say is you're probably gonna have to live w/ it. some people lie and are full of CRAP and its really unfortunate. i'm so sorry. |
Yorkie? If your puppy is registered AKC you could also complain to them about this issue. I'm sure if there is a problem they would look into it and perhaps even have a DNA test done to assure that he is the puppy of the two dogs. Yorkies can look a lot diff. from each other though! Good luck! |
Post pics, perhaps of different stages of life... |
Its also very possible the vet tech doesn't know what they are talking about. |
Sound like a yorkie to me,,, have you EVER heard anyone say this before?? Groomer, friends,, I would think if he was Obviously not a yorkie, you would have heard it by now? What do you think? |
Your puppy could still be a full breed yorkie... some yorkies have a ting of white and tan colour , some are silver and some are blue black with redish/ brown hair. check back with your breeder. this is your best source of information |
My friend have a 8 pounds Yorkie and a vet tech laugh at her when she said the breed of the dog . She ran out , went home and came back with the registered paper of Ginger . You should have seen the face of the vet tech . She apologized to Lynn . |
I will try and post pictures (I'm still trying to figure out how to do that!). He's registered AKC but the vet tech says that means nothing cause it's based on an honor system. The groomer I've used has 3 yorkies and she's never said anything to me, but now I will also ask her opinion. I will ask the vet what he thinks and about DNA testing when I pick my baby up later today. Thanks so much for answering my post. I love this site! |
puppy Be polite, but tell her to mind her own business. Many purebred Yorkies are very light in color. DNA testing is possible, but AKC will require YOU to pay for the testing, NOT the breeder. It believe it starts at $500. Years ago when Yorkies were very black, there was a new girl who entered the ring named, LACE..she was gorgeous..and she was VERY light silver...after seeing her, I started breeding for a lighter Yorkie as well as many others..you still see light in many parts of the country..here in FLroida, they like BLACK!. Look at Durrer's in Canada..she shows a lighter Yorkie. Please ignore these people..it is none of their business. |
Hi......some people are stupid.....When I had Chinese Cresteds, the hairless dogs........I went to the vet for shots and they all jumped back, asking from across the room about Mange......it made me mad b/c they had ny file that said Chinese Crested.......now, I laugh b/c if that were mange it would be the worse case....LOL Anyway, I have a yorkie.........I know to be a yorkie and she VERY light, some white roots where her blond is. I thik her color is just beautiful, even though the standard calls for them to be a steel blue. Angie |

Don;t mind what everybody tells you, most people have no knowledger of the breed and are trying to sound like experts... |
My oldest yorkie Bentley is also a lighter blonde color and his hair is just now starting to turn the steel blue color (he's 16 months old) and he's been accused of being a silkie or not a yorkie at all. He is also akc and while I'm sure he's probably just pet quality I still paid a thousand dollars for him. I have calanders, magaz ines, and just about every yorkie book there is to buy, and I see lots of pictures in these of the "lighter" colored yorkies! It is my opinion that most vets and onlookers too are not that knowledgable on the breed! Bentely knows he's a yorkie and I know he's a yorkie so I don't really care what anyone else thinks :D Just because a vet has a degree on the wall does NOT make him/her a Yorkie expert! I totally agree with Yorkierose! |
My Ginger also has some white/silver on her. she's getting lighter and lighter, she was very dark when she was younger. so the vet tech doesn't know what she's talking about.. |
