since i'm getting my first yorkie i would love to hear everyone advice on feeding, taking care, playing, ect. i need all the advice i can get. i'm so nervous about bringing rocky home. i know i must sound silly

but i cant help it lol

Not silly at all us newbies need all the help we can get and let me tell you what you have found the right place to ask your questions these guys are great!!

Also you can search through older threads to find specific answers to your questions! congrats on your new baby when are you getting your baby how old is he do u have pics we love them dearly hehehe!!

First of all CoNgRaTuLaTiOnS on your new addition! What an exciting time! It is perfectly normal for you to be feeling anxious about the whole thing. Yorkies are so tiny and fragile and literally have to be cared for like babies. You will notice a lot of people refer to them as "furbabies."

There is so much to learn about caring for your new yorkie puppy. The very first thing I would do is go out and get a "Yorkshire Terriers for Dummies" type book and read it from cover to cover. Yorkie puppies are very susceptible to hypoglocemia so you have to make sure that they eat well and eat all the time. Go buy a tube a NutriCal from your local pet store or vets office. I would give a dime size amount to your puppy 4-5 times a day at least for the first couple of weeks or until it starts eating really well on a regular schedule. The most important times to give the NutriCal would be first thing in the morning and right before you go to bed, although you should give it throughout the day, too.

As far as what food you should feed your new puppy, you should definately start it out of whatever food the breeder was giving. Then gradually mix the food you want to feed it in with what the breeder was feeding. Slowly wein him/her off the original food or their tummy will get upset. Do a search on YT for "food." You will get more information on food than you care to read. Some of the favorite brands of food of YT members are Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul, Merricks, Royal Canine, Eukaneuba, and Innova to name a few.

Just normal! Welcome to Yorkie Talk! You will find a wealth of information about yorkies here, and it's all available at your finger tips.

You can do it one of two ways: by search or by category. To use search, clich on the word "Search" on the blue bar near the top. Type in the word you want to use as a key word, and hit "Go".

The second way is by going to the main page, YT Forum, and searching the categories. I have circled the ones that would be very important to new owners. You can just go through and read to your mind's content!

Anytime you have a specific question, feel free to post here, and there are many real Yorkie Experts that come here often and can help you personally with your question!

He is really a cutie. Congrats. Nervousness on your new little one is very normal. Just watch him carefully, give the Nutrical regularly as suggested above. I would also have some Pedialyte and Peroxide on hand for those just in case emergency needs. Familiarize yourself with the potential challenges of these little ones (YT is a fabulous start) and have a vet all scoped out. Most of all, shower will hugs and kisses on a very regular basis and post lots of photos!!

Congratulation on your new baby! Everyone has given great advice. The only thing I can add is keep your vet's numbers posted on your fridge or by the phone. Search some websites for medical problems with canines and add them to your favorites list for easy reference. I like PetPlace.com it has a whole library of medical problems for dogs. Hopefully you won't need these things but its nice to have on hand just in case. And give lots and lots of love, which I know you will! LOL! Have lots of chew toys to keep him from chewing on everything else, which they will from time to time until they get out of the puppy stage. During the puppy stage is the best time for training and bonding. Keep in mind though that puppies have short memories. They respond better to praise rather than discipline. And he is a cutie! Again, Congratulations!!

Buddy was 2ys. old but am using it daily. Everyone is so helpful,
there is alot of knowledge here. Yes the book for dummies is great.

Awwh! Mary I am soo happy for you! I knew that you would love yorkietalk the moment I told you about it your face lit up and when I told you about Nancy you turned RED!! I know that he will be in good hands! It'll seem like forever but it'll fly by in no time!!!:-D

The best advice I can give other than what has already been given. Think of your yorkie puppy as a baby and not a dog.

He is adorable! You will have so much fun! I get to wait another 7-8 weeks before I get to bring my new baby home. I have many questions just like you do. This is a great place to learn. Go buy a couple of books about Yorkies. I also bought Housetraining for Dummies and Puppy Preschool. One of my Yorkie books came with a training DVD. My master plan is to stay close to my vet and enroll my baby in puppy class as soon as her 16 week shots are up to date. I might not have experience, but I can sure find others who do and lean on them a lot! Get your resources lined up ahead of time. You will do great.

you were right i love it here. i just talk to nancy yesterday and rocky is doing great. nancy said he very playful. next saturday is the big day WHOO.
