Donating YT 14K Club Member | NY Bill Will Prohibit Tail Docking And Cropping This is on the AKC website. Seems as though they are trying to pass a law that prohibits tail docking and ear cropping...I wonder if they'll prohibit dew claw removals as well. http://www.akc.org/news/index.cfm?article_id=2878

Donating YT 14K Club Member | Thing is, once one state passes this new laws, how many other states will follow? What will this say about the show world??? Some interesting points... In order to show or compete in any event, including conformation, field trials, performance events and companion events, an owner will have to prove that the dog's tail was docked prior to September 1, 2006 or the surgery was performed in another state. Finally, the bill sets up a private right of action that would allow any dog owner or animal rights organization to sue a person who violates this section. Therefore an animal rights group could sue a breeder, owner or veterinarian under this proposal.

| That's very interesting. I guess if we had never gotten used to them being docked, we wouldn't know the difference. It does seem a bit cruel, but then so does circumcision. Dewclaws are just plain ugly, so I hope they don't prohibit that. |

| There are health risks to dew claws though. If they get torn off it's very painful for the dog. There aren't risks involved in keeping tails or ears as far as I know |

| Yes, I saw this on Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and they are against it. I am not sure where I stand on this issue because I know it has to hurt when it's done, but I do prefer the way it looks. I don't think it's fair to just prohibit it in New York though. If it was prohibited throughout the entire U.S. then we would get use to it, and eventually prefer it. |

| My all breed AKC dog club talked about this bill at our last week's meeting and word has it - the Bill will not pass. They have been trying to get it to pass for 2 years and no go. |

but tails, idk I mean, sometimes I think I like Tila without the tail, I mean I think they're tails are probably really ratty, like my other dog, I feel bad for her because her tail gets all messy and tangled, and she HATES water so when we have to wash her it's terrible and I feel sooo bad. anyways I hope this law doesn't pass... | |

| If this bill does pass, will it affect the breed standard? How are people supposed to show their dogs with this law passed?

Actually, America is one of the few countries that still dock tails and crop ears. In European countries, it's banned and not allowed.
