Administrator | Where to Buy a Yorkie? There are many places to choose from when deciding to buy a Yorkshire Terrier. Pet stores, newspaper classified ads, breeders, rescue shelters, and the Internet are all places you can choose your Yorkie from. Here's some guidelines. Use your best judgment. Pet stores: I would strongly advise to avoid pet stores in purchasing your Yorkie. Many of these puppies come from puppy mills (where puppies are bred and not treated very well) or they may be from unreputable breeders. If the Yorkie is in a dirty or small, cramped cage at the pet store, you may feel very guilty. That is what the pet stores want you to think. Even if you do rescue the Yorkie from that store, another Yorkie or dog will quickly be put in that same exact cage. And it is a neverending cycle. Newspaper Ads & Breeders: Some breeders may be running a puppy mill as well, I would definitely try to find out as much information about the breeder as possible before purchasing. I highly recommend an in person visit to the breeder's home. That way, you can see the puppy's surroundings, its parents, and see how the breeder interacts with their puppies. Any reputable breeder should have no problem with you visiting them in person at their house. Also, ask if the Yorkies are AKC registered. American Kennel Club registered Yorkshire Terriers will have official papers stating the breeder, the Yorkie's parents, as well as proof that the Yorkie is a purebred Yorkshire Terrier. Also, the breeder should have papers that the Yorkie has gotten its shots and checkups at the veterinarian. Rescue Shelters: This is also a good place to get Yorkies if available. You will be saving a Yorkie. However, be warned that you may not know its health condition at all. Also, be careful of places that charge a large "rescue fee." There may be a fee to rescue a Yorkie, but that fee should not be extraordinary. Internet sites: I would prefer to visit the breeder personally if possible. There are a few sites on the Internet selling Yorkies. Some of the prices are as high as $3000, which seems pretty high for a Yorkie. If you have a good referral, that may help, but some of these operations are a bit "shady." If you do opt to shop via the Internet, try to get as much information about the breeder that you can. Ask for clients they have sold to, their experience, and anything else that may help you decide. Also, ask if you can visit them in person. Remember that reputable breeders should have no problem with that. If you do purchase one, remember that they generally would ship the Yorkie puppy on a plane or cargo carrier by itself. I'd advise meeting in person and taking the Yorkie home with you by your side. I don't believe a puppy should be put on a long plane trip at a young age by itself. Be careful of sites advertising "Teacup Yorkies" or "Miniature (Mini) Yorkies." They may be selling the Yorkies prematurely. It is NOT a Yorkshire Terrier breed standard and many are just trying to fool you. A standard Yorkie weighs between 4 and 7 pounds. If you are interested in purchasing a Yorkie that is on the smaller side of the Yorkie scale, ask a breeder. He or she may have one or two in a litter that is a bit smaller. http://www.yorkietalk.com/index.php?...o_buy_a_yorkie Last edited by admin; 03-16-2004 at 11:06 PM. |
