I think Haruka is beautiful

People look at me like I am crazy when I say George I guess they think he should have a dog name like fluffy maybe? I explain to them that he is named after my dog from when I was a child.

I think it is beautiful that you put so much thought into your puppy's name. And I love the name too. My hubby named Nikko, he liked the name after he heard me tell him about my uncle's siberian husky named Nikko. Of course the name sounds more logical on a huge dog but since Nikko is a mastiff in a 6 pound body I guess it is befitting. We just add the "ito" suffix that means "little one" in Spanish. So my grandma calls him "Nikkito".

There is really something to be said for trying to keep in touch with your roots, especially if you feel they are slipping away.

My son's "odd" name is a "roots" name too...after a grandfather. Because someone asked...his name is "Emory". See....not really so very odd!

But, I'm here in East Texas in the land of Cody/Colton/Dakota, and those kinds of "cowboy" names!

So, "Emory" sounds kinda sissy or something to people at first, like, "Emily". And he is DEFINITELY not a sissy boy!

Oh wow, I didn't know that!! Thank you for telling me that, it makes the name all the more special to me!!

Nikko certainly is the sunshine in my life so the fact that his name means "daylight" is certainly befitting.

Just make up a name for everyone who asks her name so you can avoid the explanation and be on your way. One person asks, say "Oh, her name is Lily", next person, tell them "Her name is Bambi", etc. etc. These are names that don't need an explanation and you'll get the aww, cute and then you can move along... I get annoyed sometimes when I'm out walking Oscar and people want to stop and pet him and ask questions about him - sometimes I just want to WALK MY DOG in peace....

Haruka is a beautiful name - you shouldn't have to defend your choice.

From what little I remember after taking 3 years of Japanese back in high school.

Chan is a suffix used with names to denote affection or a close relationship or used with the little ones.

That's like putting "ito" or "ita" at the end of a Spanish name.

We don't have that in English, do we? Maybe "honey"?

Like for me.. people call me Michiko chan!

Yeah I thought about that too. Maybe the closest thing in English is the "y". Like instead of Bill its Billy or instead of Pete its Petey?
