| ![]() I'm getting my Yorkie on Sat., and I was wondering if the Benefect Botanical Disinfectant is safe to use for pet toys since they go in the dog's mouth? Can my dog chew on her toys when the disinfectant is dry without it being harmful to her? I e-mailed the manufacturer and this is their response: "Regarding your inquiry, Benefect’s ingredients are all Food and Drug Administration approved as food additives or GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) listed. This allows Benefect to be the only hospital grade disinfectant to have a toxicity level 10 times less than that of vinegar and legally be exempt from any warning labels on the packaging. If your animals ingest Benefect there is a very low likelihood of any ill health effects from the product. With these safety characteristics Benefect is currently used by many of Canada’s top kennels. They use the product in pens to keep the new pups free from infection, the kennels to transport the dogs to shows, to disinfect around the eating areas and anywhere else germs are a concern. Benefect is also an excellent odour neutralizer for skunk odour and ridding the odour left over from any messes that dogs may make." The product sheet says it's safe for cutting boards, children's toys, pet areas...etc. Here's a link to their website: http://www.sensiblelifeproducts.com/...infectants.htm Do you think it's safe for me to use on my Yorkie's toys? What do you use to clean your dogs' toys with? Do you use regular bar soap and water? Thanks! |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | ![]() I would suggest some hot water and soap. You never know about that other stuff. I bought a bottle of clorox anywhere and they say you can use it on anything but I dont' trust it. I won't use it on anything that my little boy puts in his mouth. I would just err on the safe side and use hot water and soap.

| ![]() I probably wouldn't use it all the time because they are ingesting it. But here and there is probably ok... although I just put the soft dog toys in the washer and the rubbery ones you can put in soap and water...? ![]() Also although it says it is safe, 10 times less than vinegar..what about if you used it constantly at lets say 200 times in a course of 1 yr or less and then every yr there after..does it build up like chemicals can it the body or is it flushed out? We never really know..? Better to be safe.

| ![]() Thanks for your responses. I really appreciate it. So I guess soap or laundry detergent (if there's any left on the toys) is safe for them to ingest? |

If it was dangerous, I'm sure (and really hope!) my mother wouldn't have used that darn bar of soap to wash the dirty words right out my mouth when I was little! My siblings and I have eaten our fair share of soap (liquid and bar alike!) and we're all still around! ![]() Last edited by KellyV; 06-06-2006 at 12:25 PM. | |
