Default What a difference a Yorkie makes . . .

This will be a rather self-indulgent expression, but I just have to say it to anyone that will listen. If I'm being too sentimental, no one needs to answer.

As recently as two or three months ago, I remember talking about what I saw as "typical" pet owners. My attitude was, in general, "Pets are great, I've had several dogs in the past. I enjoyed their companionship, I loved them, and I took care of them. But they're DOGS, for cryin' out loud, not people!" The whole idea of arranging one's day, or a vacation, or anything else around a dog was just plain silly!

Well, 30 days ago we picked up my wife's Mother's Day present - an 8 week old Yorkie that she soon named Bailey. Nothing has been normal since. At least I haven't. Kathie had been saying from time to time for over a year that she wanted a Yorkie. As much as she loves her new baby, though, I'm the one that she keeps saying is obsessing over this puppy. And I can't argue with her - when the truth is staring you in the face, you're an idiot to deny it. When you start trying to hide from your spouse how much you're spending on stuff for your puppy, you have to admit you have a problem.

I'm approaching retirement age, too. Maybe I'm slipping into a second childhood. Anyway, I found YT a few days ago and soon discovered that I'm not the only person that these precious little furbabies affect this way. What really got me thinking about this was reading posts from people who have lost their sweet little Yorkies. As much as my heart breaks for those of you have lost one of these endearing little bundles of love, I know I really can't put myself in your position. I cannot imagine what it would be like, even after such a short time together, to not have Bailey around. And I don't want to try.

Anyway, I'd love to hear from others about the premise that underlies everything on YT - we just REALLY love our Yorkies.

Thanks for that beautiful post! I have to admit, I'm 100% with you. My family used to have a dog (non-Yorkie) and I loved her. I was heartbroken when we had to give her away due to relocating, and I didn't think I ever wanted another dog because of the painful process of having to let go in one way or another. But I got Frodo, my yorkie-mix, in January of this past year, and my life has completely turned around. My life is no longer about just me, it's about me AND Frodo! I used to see people walking around with their dogs dressed up, and I used to think a coworker was crazy for sending her dog to doggie camp and throwing her dog a huge birthday party. But I'm the same way now, and I can't wait for Frodo to be neutered next month so I can send him to camp, too!!

Welcome to YT - your sentiments are shared here

Without you even realizing it...they just kinda suck you in, don't they? And my hubby...who didn't care if we had a "dog" or not...sounds just like you.

I'm in total agreement as well. I've had many other pets in my life, but have never felt about one of them as I do about Sissy. I also thought people who took their pets with them and dressed them up were crazy. Well, guess who goes everywhere with me I can take her and who has a closet of dresses and coats on hangers?!

When she was sick yesterday, I was almost out of my mind. I can't imagine life without her. TOTALLY, HEAD OVER HEELS IN LOVE!

Hi there everyone! We are traveling (yes, with Rex & Rowdy) - so my posts will be few and far between in the next couple of months. I just had to respond to your post because I know exactly what you mean.

I am NOT a dog person - or at least I wasn't a dog person - until I met a Yorkie. We got Rowdy a little over a year ago to be a companion to my husband who had to retire unexpectedly due to a very serious illness which causes him to have to be at home most of the time.

I had no idea how it would affect me though. I am completely and totally in love with these guys. We got Rex a couple of months ago and he is just as delightful as Rowdy. The two of them are double the joy. I cannot imagine life without them! We were gone on vacation for a week and could not take them. They stayed with my mom and I called home twice a day to check on them.

Now, we are traveling in our fifth wheel and they can be with us. They are such good little travelers.

But back to your post. There is something unexplainable about Yorkies - they just steal your heart - even if you don't think you have a 'dog' heart!!!

I'm with you! I have always loved dogs, but my Yorkies are my babies. When I was really young my mom always said "Never again, I will never have another dog!" We had just had to put our Yorkie of 13 down. I was too young to be really affected, but I begged and begged for a dog for a couple years... And let's just say I won that argument. We have 4 . My dad threw a fit when I wanted a dog... But now he's the one who when you walk in is baby talking to them and cuddling them! Yorkies are just plain magic!!!

Hi there and welcome to YT! My husband is just like you. He didn't want a small dog and laughed at me when I talked about how I would take Bailey (nice name btw) everywhere with me and he said I was a Paris Hilton wannabe. Now, 1-1/2 years later and now with our second Yorkie who is 18-weeks, Morgan, my husband is more in love than ever. Actually, he reason behind purchasing Morgan was so one of the dogs he could call his own. Funny how people change after being owned by one of these sweet furbabies.

I look forward to seeing pictures and getting to know you. You have stumbled upon a GREAT family here who are so great and willing to help and listen regardless of the topic!!

Great post!!!

Am I not normal? LOL. I hear of so many people who went from not dog friendly to dog lover. I was always an animal lover, especially dogs. There was no transition or change for me. I guess I was just born to care for and love animals.
I have had many breeds of dogs and I loved them all. The thing that gets me most with yorkies is their fiesty spirit and the fact that they are so small and majestic and you can take them everywhere because of their size.
I have a real hard time understanding people that think dogs are just dogs, I really try to understand but I can't. I mean I can understand not having a dog but being the opposite of a dog lover I just don't get. Once someone said it is just a dog,not a family member, it has no feelings, if one dies just get another one. And well that made me really angry but there are people who feel that way and I just don't get it. I would do anything for my dogs, because they are my babies whom I love so much.

So congradulations to those who went from non dog lover to absoultely head over heels dog lover!!!

Love My Yorkie makes my day!!!!

Welcome, glad to have you as a new member of YT.

I also have had many dogs in the past, my last dog was a female pitbull, she was the sweetest thing and my hubby and I just adored her. We both retired, sold our house and bought a motorhome to travel in so we had to put her down to big for the small space and no parks will except pits. Just about a year ago we got (PENNY)and OMG has she changed our lives!!!!!!!!! She just makes me smile every time I look at her and she has taken over our bed, our car, our motorhome she is queen of the family. We dress her up and love it, we carry her around in a pouch and love it, we buy her so many things, that she really dont need ........ but then its so much fun to get her things, YES WE ARE IN YORKIE HEAVEN,.....

AND LOVING EVERY MINUTE OF IT !!!!!!!

What makes Yorkies so good is, how a little pup like that can have such a big heart, character and good energy.
Nothing in life will land you so much attention and love, with an exception of mother.

Fantastic post. Just yesterday my co-worker asked me if I ever imagined that Jeter would change my life so much, and I hadn't. He is such a tremendous joy in my life. I never imagined that he could turn a bad day into a good one so quickly. Those loving eyes and sweet personality are the best!! Welcome to YT , you will love it here. Tons of great people with a great amount of helpful information, not to mention great stories and pics.
