| good but also very sad news as I am writing this I still have tears streaming down my face! Abbey had her first pup at 1145 hrs a little girl, active & alert but we noticed what we thought was a cleft lip....than at 1215 she had a little boy active & alert & perfect in every way! I spoke to vet & after pushing for about 30 minutes on her 3rd pup we went to Vet Hospital.....they applied a little firmer traction as this pups head was larger. He was a boy with also the same anomalie as the first pup......we chose not to resusitate him as this anomalie invovled his nares as well. After a very long discussion with 2 vets we chose to let the little girl also join her brother.....( this was the hardest descision to make but because the nares are involved we were told the pup will continually aspirate & basically drown...and both vets stated this would be torture for both puppy, Abbey & us). Its strange though its like Abbey knew, she licked the puppy, we kissed the puppy & she(Abbey) allowed the vet to take her. Its been a really hard day! .......this has only confirmed my earlier decision that I do not want to get back into breeding. I emailed both breeders of my adult dogs.....they have not responded. Vets say it could be congenital or one of those "things"......still heartbreaking.....and this is Abbey's last litter she will have no more.......Beamer is getting neutered June 6th. On a good note( trying to feel it still).....Abbey is doing wonderful, nursing & mothering her little boy, no signs of looking for the other pups....she is back to her old self, giving us lots & lots of kisses! I will weigh the little boy later this evening, right now I am tired & sooooo down in the DUMPS! I'll take pics tomorrow , I want Abbey to have a quiet night with her little boy........ my hubby calls him Indy! The Indy 500 was on I guess & he feels this little guy beat the odds! I know I am making the right decision about no further breeding from Abbey & Beamer. I love them so much & am glad they are both healthy & active, loving furbabies! I pray I made the right decision with regards to the angel puppies.....sorry for the long post! Thanks for all your support Terrilyn, Mario & Family Abbey, Beamer & Indy

| I am so sorry to hear the news. I am glad Mommy still has one pup to raise. I have never known of two cleft palates in one litter. I wouldn't breed them anymore either. I have read that Vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy could cause cleft palates? Did you just feed Mom puppy food and not supplement? From the net: Excessive dietary vitamin A intake must be avoided during pregnancy, so Avoid unregulated multivitamin or vitamin A supplementation during pregnancy Avoid unregulated liver intake during pregnancy Avoid unregulated fish oil supplementation during pregnancy Great care is needed when administering parenteral vitamin supplements to pregnant animals Feed a complete pet food formulated for pregnancy without supplements Consider excess dietary vitamin A intake as a possible cause for congenital cleft palate when it occurs |

| AWw thats so sad but sounds like you did the right thing for this puppy family and I think it would be hard given how much you love your babies so be gentle on yourself and know your love shines through .
