Any Yorkies with Full or long Coats? When ever I get lucky enough to see another Yorkie, they are either shaved completely down or a long full un-groomed coat. Both my male & female, Artie & Abigail have long or full "Groomed" coats year round regardless of the weather, w/c is a lot of work/high maintenance. I was just curious to know how many of you do the same? I know alot of Yorkie owners that don't want to deal with "Grooming" their Babies so they just shave it all off? So the question is are they "Buzzed" or are they prancing around with flowing hair, complete with a topnot/bow? |
I have always kept mine in full coats and bows. I have never found it a chore, or considered it high maintenance. Still don’t understand why so many people think grooming a Yorkie is so much work. My Vet has always commented on how well kept my Yorkie is, compared to the many others that come in all tangled up. |
1 Attachment(s) I do hair and Bows EVERY DAY and I love taking care of them and their hair. Both my girls are in full coat with some maintenance by ME.:) they are little tomboys but if you keep up with their hair - it's pretty easy. this pic was taken last Halloween |
I am curious as well to see replys to this post....Bailey is just 6 months and his beautiful adult coat is coming in nicely.....I have been debating with myself for a couple of weeks whether or not to cut it. Hubby says no because I adore a full coat and he knows it. Bailey's coat is so easy to care for, a good brush every day, (takes about 10-15 mins) and a bath are tidy about every week or so, depending on when it needs it. My reason for considering cutting it is the heat. So reply away folks , I am looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts.............red98vett....Your girls are so beautiful, I always do the "ooooo...ahhhhh...." when I see pictures of them. :) |
We did have the long flowing coat but I got tired of it and took it all off this week. I loved is long hair but I don't regret cutting it at all! I can take him outside to hang out with us now and not worry what's stuck to his hair when he comes in! LOL! I'll let it grow back for the winter. Maybe. But right now I'm loving not having to brush him everyday. He still has his topknot though. :) |
I keep Chachi in a puppy cut because he has cottony hair and it is easier to manage. I keep Jewels in a long coat though. I also have her groomed once a month at my groomers recommendation |
lets see some long flowing coats |
Coats I love....love the look of the long flowing coats. I dont' have much time to keep up with it though. Lex has been given a puppy cut with the long hair on his head still intact. When it gets cooler he will get back to being longer all over. |

My Grace 1 Attachment(s) Here's one of Grace, although I just gave her a trim, she's due to deliver puppies today. |
3 Attachment(s) I always keep my Yorkies in long coat. Here's a pic of Cali who due to major surgery had a lot of her length and underneath hair chopped off but is on her way. The other is Gracie who has gone to the rainbow bridge in her full coat/ |
1 Attachment(s) Here is Bear :) I will take some more pics today as his coat is quite a bit longer now. |
outstanding pictures of your babies,, i just love all of them, keep them comimg please.... |
I will always keep mine in long coats. My vet and I think someone else here on Yt said that the hair which we think would be hot actually protects them from the heat and the sun. So if this is the case then the only reason you would get your babies hair cut is if you just didn't want to keep up with the coat and find the summer cuts to be alot easier to manage. |
i keep baxxxter cut short because i take him EVERYWHERE all the time and i would be brushing out mats everyday. i wouldnt mind grooming him daily, i just prefer him with shorter hair. |

If I were to keep Desi in a long coat, it would take me at least 30 minutes a day to comb her, if not more. She has a ticket coat and easily knots, which is why I buzz cut her body but leave some hair on her legs and head. Millie, on the other hand, is going to have a long coat because her's is much thinner and silkier and I don't think it takes 3 minutes to comb her. So, I would say it depends entirely on the type of coat. |
1 Attachment(s) You ALL got such pretty babies with long coats, makes mine look like frail little old grannies lol... In the pic it's Chanel on the left, Chelsey on the right. |
1 Attachment(s) Here is Peppy.... |
Chelsey, Your dogs are beautiful. I was wondering your one dog is darker then the other how old is that dog? My dog Molly looks just like that( i mean she has the same coloring) and she almost 7 months old. I love the color of the other yorkie, do you rember at what age her fur changed? Again your babies are beautiful. Crystal |
3 Attachment(s) I keep Sophie in a full coat. I have been debating on cutting it but I can't bring myself to do it. It is not that hard to care for. A good brushing everyday and a bath with lots of conditioner once a week keeps her looking nice.:) |
4 Attachment(s) Jazzie has cottony hair and a full coat! She is very easy to care for. First picture is Immediately after a bath & blow drying. Next is ... I just like the picture 3rd is right before she is due for a bath 4th is to show how a cottony hair can shine and be beautiful |
Wow......all of you are Beautiful! What a response.......they are all soooo beautiful!!! I didn't expect to see so many with long coats, what a surprise. Thanks for all the pictures, I wish my camera was working it makes me want to take pictures of my 2.:aimeeyork |
Corinne how old is Jazzie. She is beautiful. Her coloring is like Cali's. I don't think Cali will ever clear of all the black on her head. |

I know my husband keeps saying he is willing he to stay black! |
1 Attachment(s) :) Gypsy doesn't have quite a full coat yet but we are working on it. She's starting to look really pretty and I definitely plan on keeping her long, her coat is actually very easy to look after because it's nice and silky. I'm really enjoying all the pictures of these beautiful yorkies, keep them coming OK? |
4 Attachment(s) Maddie and Polly have full coats, they have the silk hair. Rudy has real thick hair and is all boy so I got him a cut last summer, it is growing so I think I will let it grow. Sprout is only 8 month, will let him have a full coat. It takes me at least an hour to bath and dry each of them, but I love the full coat. 1. Maddie 2. Polly 3. Sprout 4. Rudy |
We are working on Mellies coat. We had an unfortunate groomer accident about 6 months ago. He let his assistant trim her,  I only cried for a day not bad. Mac is not in a puppy cut, but shorter. He is such a pain to brush, having him shorter just works better. Also males in my house think since he's a boy he should look like a boy. Not that they actually have any say!!!! |

Thanks Crystal28 :) .... Chanel on the left is 14 months, she started changing colour at 7 weeks, yes we got her at a very young age (long story) ;) Chelsey on the right is 17 months and started changing colour at 10 weeks, both girls got grey roots on their heads first, then i noticed grey colouring on their hind legs shortly after. Now i have noticed Chelsey is changing to a deep blue/steel colour on her hiney going up by her tail. Chanel is VERY licht, under the top layer of hair, it's close to white, what's so funny is that her tail stays dark. |
