Poison Alert Cocoa Mulch Penelope loved to visit her spa, the Paradise Ranch in Sun Valley, California. When the folks at the Ranch heard about Penelope dying from eating snail bait, they wrote this story and published it in their newsletter. I'm so grateful to them and I want to share it with everyone. I hope everyone who reads this will pass along the information to as many people as possible. Sincerely, Jay Carsman Our Pets are being Poisoned All pet owners, please be aware of what products you or your gardeners treat plants and kill unwanted snails or bugs with. Talk to your gardeners, it is now spring time and we are treating our yards for all kinds of things. Many gardening products are poisonous to pets and there is no antidote, the pet will die. Read all labels and if you are unsure what products and plants are toxic to your pet, go to the internet and research the product or plant being used. Please inform all friends and neighbors as well for they may not know, what is being put down in their yards. Unfortunately, we had a client inform us that their 6 year old Yorkie, Penelope was poisoned by eating some Snail Bait put down by their gardener. Snail Bait is very poisonous to your pets. The owners are devastated, and asked us to make everyone aware of what is being used by you or your gardener. We are so sorry for their loss. Penelope was so beautiful and sweet. She did not care much about playing with the other dogs, she preferred to be sitting on our laps putting a smile on our faces. Penelope will be missed here at the Paradise Ranch. We were also informed by our Vet. Dr Mohan of Shadow Hills that a Labrador Retriever had passed on from eating from a garden with Cocoa Mulch. Cocoa Mulch which smells like chocolate attracts pets. The dog loved the way it smelled and devoured a large helping of it. She vomited several times, but never seemed lethargic to the owner. The next day, on their morning walk, the Lab had a seizure and died. The Mulch was advertised to keep cats away from the garden, not dogs. Although the mulch had NO WARNING printing on the label, upon further investigation on the company’s website, this product is HIGHLY TOXIC to dogs and cats. Pets have died within 17 hours of ingesting the Cocoa Mulch. Cocoa Mulch contains a lethal ingredient called Theobromine. Cocoa Mulch is sold at some of our local stores, such as Target, Lowes, Home Depot and many more garden supply stores. To get more facts and information about their product click on their link Cocoa Mulch Please email the manufacturer at michellmessick@hersheys.com to request that accurate information about this product be posted on the packaging to avoid further tragedy. Save our pets and please help the gardeners understand what, and what not to use in your gardens

Wow, thank you for sharing this information with us. I'm so sorry for the loss, but maybe you can prevent another doggy from passing away.

Wow....thanks for the info! I used to get cocoa mulch all the time for my flower beds. It smells strongly of chocolate and it tidied up my gardens quite a bit. Because it's cocoa bean husks, I can see how it can be dangerous to dogs...I can't believe that I never thought of that before! Wow...never again will I buy this stuff.

Glad you posted this , I was going to buy some this week. Not now. I'll have to think of something else to use. My lawn also looks awful because of the moles and grub worms, but I refuse to use the Diazinon that is recommended for this problem because I'm afraid the pets will be sickened or worse from walking on it.I have three bags in the shed unused and thats where they will stay. I bought it two years ago but felt uncomfortable about using it. Thanks again for the info.
