Last night Lillie was lying in her bed as we watchwed TV, as usual. We noticed that she was breathing very rapidly. She wasn't panting, but you could see and feel her sides moving very quickly as she was breathing. This concerned us, but then she seemed fine. Has anyone else experienced this?

How old is she? Our 3 month old baby sometimes will breathe like that. I think it is OK in puppies, but do not know for sure in older dogs

was she awake of asleep? I have 3 and my oldest boy who is allergic to EVERYTHING does breathe a bit faster than my other 2. Also, they all run in their sleep and dream alot and they all tend to breathe rapidly and 'run' (their little feet just go and go like they're running).

She's almost 3 years old. She was not really asleep - kind of dozing.

Abbie will do this, too, occasionally! She's not play-dreaming. It's really a rapid, almost hyperventilating breathing in her sleep.

The only reason I haven't paniced and taken her to the vet is because she seems fine. I rouse her a little, and she goes back to sleep.

According to my Red Cross Pet First Aid book, the normal breathing rates for a dog are 10-30 breaths per minute and up to 200 pants per minute. You can check the rate by watching the dog as s/he is lying on her side or back. I think watching the belly is easier. Anyway, count how many times you see chest rise/fall in 15 seconds. Then multiply by 4. That is the resp. rate. You could count for a whole minute, but we know how restless doggies are!

Has she had a steroid shot for allergies. First steroid shot Maddie got made her do that, now when she gets one Doc gives her less.

Peanut has rapid Breathing when he has a bad tummy ache.I give him a pepcid and watch him for a day or so. If no improvement we go to vet.

All my dogs have done that occasionally for no good reason (awake or resting) . I have never known why - but it has never been a problem.

well if she was just dozing off to sleep I think that's what they REM isn't it? where the eyes dart back and forth under the lids real fast? That's when they are like to act out in sleep too. Call you vet to give you peace of mind, but I think your baby is fine and doing what's normal.

Bo had a C-section on Saturday. She lost her three pups. I've gone back to the hospital twice with her already, I'm so afraid of losing her too....

She's panting and breathing so fast almost all the time... Is it because she's in pain? She hasn't been eating very well. She's had diarrhea and has to take antibiotics with food.

I called the hospital again today, and the vet told me to boil chicken and mix it with white rice. She seemed to like that a lot and ate pretty well. And she does seem better now, not so lethargic. We went for a little stroll a while ago and she was more energetic than I've seen her since Saturday.

But she's still panting and breathing fast even at rest. We have A/C, so I don't think she's suffering from the heat. And she's not running a fever.

Any ideas??? I really hate seeing her like this...

DarkStar, take her temp...if it is above 103 call your vet right away
she may have a slight infection...I would take it twice a day for the next three days.

if there is no temp she just might be anxious and wondering what happened to her and where her puppies went...

Thank you Kimberly, I am taking her temp regularly. She's definitely not running a fever. And she already is on antibiotics, but for her diarrhea. Last time I brought her to the vet's, on Monday, they kept her under observation overnight and took blood to see if her white cell count was abnormal, but the results came back normal.

I guess she's just feeling anxious (little wonder, after all she's been through, poor little thing

) and I'm worrying too much... but I'm having a hard time controlling that. Maybe she's feeling that too, huh?
