Question on gardens We are going to be landscaping our back yard and I was just wondering if there is anything I should be careful of when owning a yorkie. Ill be bringing her home probably sometime in June. Are there any types of bushes, plants or flowers I should stay away from. I am already making sure there are no spaces under the fence that she can escape from. Thanks

A while back there was a post about plants that are poisoness to yorkies. I bookmarked it and if you'd like to look at that, here it is: http://members.cox.net/jonanyorkies/aapoison.htm#C This will be the first summer for my yorkie and I was concerned about one side of our yard that has a cactus, a rose garden and a pond. I bought some of those little landscape fence pieces and put all along that side of the yard. My yorkie could easily jump that little fence, but seems to know that it's there for a reason and so far, she hasn't tried. Before that fence, she was always running into that area. I love gardening and from the list of poisoness plants, I figure I've got lots of that out there and don't want to rip out all my plants, so I plan to teach Maddie to stay out of the garden areas. Hope this helped some and good luck with your landscaping!

Well according to this list my garding is a death trap. I planed my garden well an tried my best not to plant plants that could harm our dogs, I guess i did not do that well. Here I was avoiding Morning glory's We have tuplis all over and Hyacinth, a nickle blue Hydrangea, Sage , romary indoors a well as out doors in summer and primulas, These plants have been here since we got chester , no beariers are put up only for the tulips and that was to prevent the worker from cutting head off. It has been three years no issues. Thank goodness. I lucky chester does not care about plants

Here is another warning about gardens and grass. If you spray pecticide in your garden, your dog can get poisoned by it especially if you have a dog that likes to munch on grass or like to lick it's paw.

To me, it seems if someone goes by the list, there won't be much left to pick from and I'd be pulling up half my yard. I used to have my sister's yorkie here a lot and he never bothered a thing. Maddie is a different story. I've had to make my sunroom out of bounds to her because that, too, is full of no no's and she will grab a leaf off of one of the plants and take off running with it. I am really going to work on teaching her limits in our yard. Also, I don't let her be out there unsupervised, so I notice if she's into something she shouldn't be.

FYI...we purchased our yorkie after we fixed up our backyard. We have several plants that our dangerous to dogs. We just put hard wire around those plants so that he won't have the urge to eat them and we can still enjoy them! One word of advice...don't put bark in your backyard! Stomper loves to eat it and ends up choking all the time! We have tons of bark, so I am not sure what to do.
