| PLEASE HELP Stop puppymills After a young girl purchased a Petstore puppy from Missouri that was sick and asked for help on what to do. I started digging deeper into Missouri puppy mills and the Petstore connection to see what I could find. I hate to say it but I am so ashame that I live in the state of Missouri and of our Governor Matt Blunt. As everyone know Missouri is on of the biggest Puppy Mill producers in the United States. What I learned is the Hunte’s corporation is based in Goodman Missouri. Our Governor , the Usda and the Hunte’s corp. are all in bed together. And are supporting the puppy mill misery we have . http://www.critterhaven.net/partners.htm#partners Hunte has dealt extensively with commercial puppy mill breeders—many of which have failed to comply with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) minimal standards. Hunte also allowed one breeder—whose USDA license was revoked after he abandoned nearly 150 dogs to die in an overheated truck—to remain in charge of that kennel after Hunte purchased it. The same man, Douglas Alan Hughes, now serves as Hunte’s director of new breeder business development. In the same article that quoted the governor’s accolades for Hunte, the company’s founder stated that 10 percent—an estimated 8,000 animals—of the puppies who the company receives are so genetically defective or sick that pet stores reject them. Gov. Matt Blunt wielded the scissors for the ribbon-cutting ceremony Wednesday as Andrew Hunte, his wife, Gina, his family and dozens of employees looked on for the dedication of the 100,000-square-foot expansion. Hunte says, "I want to assure you there is not another facility like this in the pet industry and not another like it in the world," . "My wife and I have made a major commitment to this part of the country, and we want to do our best to make Missouri a better state and a world leader in providing quality pets." IMO.. who does this man think he is fooling he is nothing more then a puppy miller and broker himself and to have a governor that accolades for a company that has caused suffering and misery for hundreds of thousands of dogs and their offspring is sicken. He supplies puppies to the Wizard of Claws , Petland and other Petstore all across the United states. The Usda is funding his operation. One letter I read asked the President of the United States to take the control away from the USDA and use an independent outside source to control, and oversee these large-volume commercial dog breeder. An independent non for profit agency that is NOT in bed with the commercial puppy breeding industry charged with inspection and enforcement of the Animal Welfare Act. Which I think would be a great ideal. After all USDA should be dealing with agriculture, and livestock ONLY! Companion animals are not livestock, nor should they be treated as livestock. http://www.akitarescue.info/openletter.htm And here I another interesting read. http://www.5stardog.com/puppies-for-sale.asp PLEASE tell everyone you know to boycott any Petstores who sell puppies. If may not stop the problem but may help send a clear message that we are tired of these practices when it come to our companion animals health and welfare. If anyone have any ideals on anything else we can do ..I would love to hear then. |

| Sad, but all too true. I was ready to write a letter to the USDA in regards to a breeder that was just posted here on YT and then I realized that my letter(s) would most likely be simply put in the trash or be laughed at. I now know that my letters of concern SHOULDN'T be sent to the USDA, instead to someone higher that would actually give a dam*. THANK YOU for posting this. It was much needed, and I did know that Missouri (Misery) was the leader in housing puppy mill organizations. Still a beautiful state and I have MOST of my family there. I still am aware of it's productivity of puppy mill puppies. It's a shame. |

| Writing letters to your state and state reps, etc can help, but I'm never to sure.. what I have done is write to your paper or and tell everyone you know about puppy mills, most people are clueless, as was I. Our paper has a section that you can write in and they will print your letter, " readers viewpoints" they printed mine, and I got so many calls and comments from it, it amazed me. I believe educating people is the best way I can stop it. Ohio is bad with puppy mills too, I live 10 mins from the heart of all the mills around here, it is ridiculous. And Needs to stop! here is the letter I wrote... To The Editor: I am writing in support of the Times Reporter’s recent article exposing local puppy mills. Hopefully these types of articles will bring about public awareness and end this horrendous abuse. I have been aware of the animal abuse in the puppy mill industry and I am repulsed. After reading your article and the breeder’s comments on the life of these puppies, I felt compelled to respond. As a pet advocate, my passion is that people understand the life of these puppies. Typically a puppy is taken away from its mother at an early age, usually between 5 – 8 weeks. Due to their early age, any illness, genetic or emotional problems that a puppy may have will not be detected. On the other hand, the mothers are forced to breed from their first heat and every 6 months thereafter until they are unable to produce. This abusive breeding cycle can last between 5 to 10 years. Another problem arising in this industry is the breeder’s lack of concern to maintain the breed standard. Too often breeders fall prey to the latest craze, which includes breeding “teacups” and “mini’s”. This is just a small portion of information that is available on what is really going on in this industry. Until the public stops buying puppies from puppy mills, this industry will continue to thrive. The puppies and adult dogs will continue to be forced to live in these harsh and uncaring environments. Seven of the biggest puppy mill states are Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Pennsylvania. Let’s not make Ohio number eight. In lieu of supporting puppy mills, please check www.petfinder.com for local dogs that are available. Every year 5 – 10 million pets are euthanized in shelters in the United States. Again, thanks to the Times Reporter for printing articles about puppy mills and doing their part in increasing public awareness. Sincerely, Rhonda Rosenberry Proud owner of a non puppy mill Yorkshire Terrier. Aka – Bailey For anyone interested in viewing information about puppy mills, here are a few good sites: www.puppymillrescue.com, www.prisonerofgreed.com, and www.millbusters.com A site to write your congressman to stop puppy mills in your state: www.house.gov/writerep I do have an address to report mills in Ohio... http://www.columbusdogconnection.com...ngPupMill.html

| I purchased my Yorkie (Izzy) from a puppy mill. Not because I wanted to support it, but because I just could not leave her there. She was 3 months old. The owner said she was going to keep her for breeding but she was too small. The house was out in the country. I thought "what a really nice place for dogs to live. Lots of room to run." I was wrong. The owner had Izzy inside the house. Izzy was so tiny. Her hair was shaved. (The owner said she let the Girl Scouts shave her for a badge.) I wanted to see the parents. So , the owner went outside to get them. So we followed the owner outside. She let us know right away, that we were not suppose to be out there. We didn't listen, we proceeded to follow her. It was the most awful site. There were probably 150 dogs. All different breeds. The cages were clean and everything seamed organized. But those poor dogs were just screaming for attention. I just stood there and cried. My sister was with me. She told me not to by her. First because she was so ugly. Plus she didn't want me to support a breeder like this lady was. But, I could not leave her in that place. I brought her home. Izzy was so shy and would not play at all. She had kennel cough (even though the owner said she had treated her twice). Izzy is now 2 1/2 years old. She is 3 1/2 pounds of joy. She is beautiful, once her hair grew back. It took her at least 6 months before we could get her to play. People stop us on the street to ask where I got her. So, I tell them her said story. Then refer them to a family breeder. I will never go back to a puppy mill again. I am glad I have Izzy. But puppy mills should be shut down. These places are just factories not homes. Dogs need love and attention. Izzy is not just my pet but part of my family. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | GREAT POST and I like Rhonda have been writing letters for years now...since I learned about Mills and the EVIL HUNTE corp. They are totally disgusting and greedy and it's a big big business. The MORE PEOPLE that speak out the better the people in charge will listen. I would say to everyone - don't give up - and don't think you don't matter - you DO. The more people that get involved the better chance we have of trying to stop this inhumane CRUEL treatment of the poor suffering dogs in Mills. If I had a wish...it would be to put them ALL in jail for Cruelity to Animals. Every single person that considers a dog nothing more than a means to an end - profit has NO SOUL. They don't care about them at all and they could care less how much suffering goes on in those facilities. They're so sick and evil human beings. |
