[News] Does a Name Mean Success at Dog Shows? They are named after action heroes, Broadway musicals, perfume, tragic events and royalty in Hebrew -- but does it matter to the 2,385 contestants who participated in the Greeley Kennel Club Dog Show this past weekend? Doug Johnson thinks it does. Names are an important factor in breeding a successful show dog, he said. Dogs are sensitive and have feelings, Johnson said, while brushing his shaggy, 80-pound Old English shepherd, Smokin'. Born around New Year's Eve, his name was derived from the resolution many people make. They know when they win or lose a competition, Johnson said. "If you have a special name, you have a special dog," he said. Maybe he's right. Smokin' took best in his breed. Seventeen-month-old Yeager seemed to have the right stuff in this year's 54th competition. The keeshond and his brother, Bond, walked away champions, having earned the necessary points for the title. Melissa Corash waited to show her 2-year-old Bedlington terrier. The hair around Naseka's ear was shaved almost to the tip, where a remaining puff made it look like she was wearing earrings. Naseka came from a breeder who named all of her dogs after perfume or Hebrew words, Corash said. Naseka means princess. Belle is a borzoi born on Sept 11. Nadine Johnson of Colorado Springs named her after the Statue of Liberty in memory of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Belle is 3 feet 6 inches tall with long, silky strands of creamy vanilla hair with a few brown spots mixed in. Other names were less creative. Barb Bedsted of Minneapolis named her Yorkshire terrier Louis because she picked him up in Louisville, Ky. But if that made Louis feel less noble, it wasn't obvious by his poise on a red towel that matched a red bow on his small head. He ranks No. 8 for his breed in the country. Vivian Harvey is indifferent about what effect names have. Her charcoal-colored Skye terrier, Hannah, seemed to know her hair was parted to perfection, hanging off her ears like two ponytails on a school girl. She peeked out from behind bangs that covered most of her face. "If she were a person, she would flip her hair," Harvey said. She doesn't particularly like Hannah's name, but she was already named when Harvey and her husband, Larry, adopted her. Harvey said she has no idea the validity of dog psychology, but some of the names we give children are hideously cruel, she said. Dogs in the Greeley Kennel Club Dog Show have elaborate show names that include their Kennel names and a variation of their call names, or what their owners call their dogs. Some examples of those names are: Rising Star Liberty Belle Champion Stratford On The Half Shell Arlen Summer Breeze Beau Chien Monet's Tawny Mist Mack The Knife Stetson's Champagne Flight Some examples of dogs' call names in the Greeley Kennel Club Dog Show: Naseka, Bedlington terrier Masquerade, clumber spaniel Yeager and Bond, keeshonds Smokin', Old English shepherd Cossett, poodle http://www.greeleytrib.com/apps/pbcs...108160037&rs=2

That was a nice read. I often find myself daydreaming of new names so when I get another Yorkie I have a nice list ready in my head. I think the names says it all. Cute name=cute dog. Scarey name=scarey dog.

I don't think the name really means anything at a show. The name we use in the ring is the call name, which usually differs a lot from the registered name. My males registered name is "Sugar Shacks Lord of the Dance" but he is called Meeko, so which name are you referring to. Call name or registered name. Almost all dogs are registered with a classy name, but who wants to go around calling them by it.

Rothby's is a very notable name now, just like Wildweir was years ago. Roberta is very active in showing and doing things with the YTCA. She is at almost all of the shows that I go to. My Cheyenne has Rothby dogs in her pedigree also Lazron, and Galfreds.
