New Member Hello All, I'm a new member and just wanted to introduce myself. I'm one of those bleeding heart animal lovers that can't say no to a special needs dog. We've had plenty of them. Most notable is the beagle that was allergic to absolutely EVERYTHING. If it grew he was allergic - if it was meat chicken or fish - he was allergic to it. The only thing he wasn't allergic to was dairy and I think you see the irony in that. We made do with fresh lamb and rice (before the craze started). That was what he was the least allergic to. But oh what a great dog he was. We spent a fortune on him but he was worth it. I also taught a Collie sign language. I've joined YorkieTalk.com because after years and years of yearning I have finally allowed myself to buy a Yorkie puppy. In fact I have arrangements with a breeder (also a friend) to get one from her next litter. My Yorkie was conceived a couple of weeks ago and I guess will be born around Mother's Day. (How appropriate huh?) My first question is whether or not I should get a male or a female. I have a five year old male German Shepherd and a seven year old female shi tzu. The shi tzu, which is so often the case, is the alpha in this pack of two. The Shep is her loyal follower and protector. This is very cool since we have coyote in the neighborhood. Not that I let them go out alone but just in case....it is good to know. The little one will be safe. I will look forward to your comments. Thanks Lou PS After reading some of your posts I am very eager to have you all as friends.

Male vs. Female? If you have a small dog already that's female, know that if you get a male yorkie, he may harass her until he's neutered. It doesn't matter if she's spayed or not. Many males got nuts even over discharge. Even after he's neutered there is no guarantee, but theory has it that he should leave her alone at that point. Now, not all males are this way...just most. SO! In my opinion, I would recommend you get another little girl. Just remember that a true Yorkie temperment is a terrier first and a toy second. She should have no problems dealing w/ the Shih Tzu's dominate personality.

Welcome! I have two girls and one boy. Although I have a little boy that is definitely a Mommy's boy and is my constant shadow, I am partial to little girls. I think it's because of the marking males sometimes do, but of course if you don't spay than you have the heat cycle to go through. I guess I would just pick the one that captures my heart. I was actually going to purchase a female (and one was available), but I just had to have this little boy and I have never regretted it.
