I do that with Princess, she will stop and run right to me
it's so funny. I can whisper anything, and she can't stand it.
She gets really quiet so she can hear me. It be sad if she missed out on
a shopping trip because she's barking up a storm.

I totally agree with you. I hear people screaming at their children and their dogs all the time --- trying to effect some sort of behavior -- and this never works.

Of course, if we're loud -- our children and dogs are going to be louder.

I am also very quiet with my dogs when I try to get them to do something.
If my pups starts barking a little more than I like. I just pick him up, and say, "Murphy, what in the world are you doing -- move him and get him interested in something else" ....or something like this. I do this in a "normal voice" and sometimes even more quieter than that.

Again, I totally agree with you that if we want our dogs to be quiet - we certainly need to set that example.

When you yell at your barking dog, the dog thinks that you're barking right along with it. The whispering is a great idea. Also, if you can train your dog to bark on command, you can also train him/her to be quiet on command. We tried this with our yap happy mixed terrier and it worked! It didn't take long for her to learn to 'speak' and to be 'quiet'. Of course there had to be treats involved!

I will have to try that also. Tike barks all the time. When he is playing, hear any thing at all, He barks sometimes just to bark.

I'll try whispering. That's a good idea. I've been making Susan come and sit down in front of me. It breaks the cycle and distracts her. But I think it sort of scares her and makes her think she's doing something awful because as soon as I let her break the sit she leaps into my arms and starts licking my face like she's desperate to get on my good side again.
