| dog friendly places near Charleston, SC? Yaaaaay! We just got word that we're allowed to take Ginger along to the beach house we've rented with my extended family in Isle of Palms, SC. I've been looking on line and found an off leash dog park on the isle of palms, but am wondering if anyone knows of additional places where dogs are welcome. We also love to check out any shops that cater to pet owners (with or without their pets) whenever we go on vacation. We'd love any recommendations! Thanks! |

| Woohooooo, that's my city! Actually, I live in Mt. Pleasant by the Isle of Palms connector. James Island County Park has a dog park, off-leash area...I didn't know there was one on IOP but I'll definitely check it out. Hmm as for pet friendly places, there are many! Check out our local magazine: "Lowcountry Dog" http://www.lowcountrydog.com/page/page/1652269.htm and it has a list of dog-friendly places/stores/etc.: http://www.lowcountrydog.com/page/page/1652269.htm

| Here's an experpt from Lowcountry Dog magazine: The only "official" off-leash dog park east of the Cooper (which includes Mount Pleasant, Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms and north toward Awendaw) is the Bark Park, which the Isle of Palms Recreation Department recently opened behind their rec center on 28th Avenue. (Be aware that Isle of Palms residents must purchase a license for their dogs and that animal control officers do patrol this area fairly regularly.) The Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission is currently considering a proposal to add an off-leash area to Palmetto Islands County Park in Mount Pleasant. At this time no plans are in the works; however, it's one of a number of different projects up for review as to when funding will be made available and, according to a CCPRC project coordinator I spoke with recently, is definitely on their "short list." Meanwhile, dog owners should be aware that there are no off-leash areas anywhere at Palmetto Islands County Park. The small agility area maintained by the Low Country Dog Agility Club of Greater Charleston is not to be used for off-leash activities, nor are dogs allowed off the leash anywhere in the park at this time. "It's a Town of Mount Pleasant ordinance as well as a park rule," said Jim Hoy, park manager, when I called and asked. Meanwhile, calls to the Mount Pleasant Recreation Department as to any plans for an off-leash dog park within the confines of the town were not immediately returned. However, I'll be sure to update this information for our May issue. Renee Publisher, Lowcountry Dog magazine
