| Spay Today Program-Please Read I just wanted to write a thread about the program I help run at Briggs Animal Adoption Center in Charles Town, WV. (Eastern panhandle of WV) We are actually employed by the NHES, National Humane Education Society, but are located at the BAAC. The program was set in place many, many years ago and was started by two women in the Charles Town area. We have now taken over the running of the program and we have been spaying and neutering ever since. We have 10 different vets that work with us who are willing to give us lowered prices on spays and neuters and even some vaccinations and tests. They give us these lowered prices because so many vets have to deal with bounced checks and people who claim to pay later but never walk back through their doors. So this way the public pays us directly, then we are billed from each vet in turn, then we pay him or her directly so that they have no fear of bounced checks. Here are their locations- Charles Town, WV; Ranson, WV; Hedgesville, WV; Martinsburg, WV; Inwood, WV; Baker, WV; Winchester, VA; Stephens City, VA; Strasburg, VA & Purcellville, VA. All the vets have different costs for their procedures depending upon how much they are willing to discount. Some of them have very quick appointments set and others take up to 2-3 months to get into their books. (Because some of them can only afford or are willing to do 5 spays and neuters a month. But hey I'm not complaining. At least they're participating and animals are still getting spayed and neutered! ) The way the program works is pretty self-explanatory. Whoever would like to go through Spay Today (Anyone is welcome and there is no application.) must either mail in their information (name, address, phone number, pets names, age, breed, weight) and payment (cash or check-written out to Spay Today- and add $3.00 to total for our administration fee which helps us to pay for all our paper work) or they may come in person to the BAAC. We set the appointments and if it was mailed then we will mail back a 'voucher' that has their surgery date on it and all the procedures marked that they plan to have done, along with pre-surgery information and drop off/pick up times. We are constantly trying to get more vets to work with our program but so few are willing to lose a little bit of money to help out a lot of people. It is when a vet chooses its income over its initiative to aid those in need of assistance that I personally lose complete interest in the facility. If every vet even just promised 1-5 spays and neuters a month.. Wow, imagine how many spayed and neutered animals we would have in a year! Imagine how many innocent lives we could have saved? How closer we would be to one day having 'empty kennels' at our local animal control centers and 'humane societies’. If any of think your vet might be interested it would be wonderful if you would approach them and ask if they would consider working with our program. If so we will put together a packet and mail it right over! The more we get the better! The NHES and the BAAC are nonprofit organizations and we make no profit from our Spay Today program. In fact we are actually very much so in the red when it comes to bounced checks and no-shows. But because of wonderful people such as yourselves, who give and donate selflessly we survive solely on donations. The price for spays and neuters continue to rise constantly because of advances in safer anesthesia’s and better sutures. (Did you know that just one little box of sutures cost $100.00!) And of course this is for the benefit of our animals’ safety and health. But it is getting harder and harder for many, many people to afford to spay or neuter their animals even if they want to. And that’s exactly why we’re here! Every year we are getting more and more animals altered and the numbers are still rising! I love my job and can't think of any occupation being any more rewarding, than knowing that I'm helping to save lives. Every animal counts and I'm so happy that this program is in motion. Our Spay Today information including the different vets prices and locations can be found on Briggs Animal Adoption Center’s website- www.baacs.org If anyone wishes to contact us by phone our Spay Today number is 1-304-728-8330. And our mailing address is as follows- Spay Today; P.O. Box 340; Charles Town, WV 25414-0340 Also, if anyone is interested Briggs is a no-kill shelter and we have about 60 dogs and within the next week we will have completed our construction on our cattery and will have about 100 cats in our facility. Every animal that comes into our facility is spayed or neutered and vaccinated before being placed for adoption. If anyone were interested in volunteering at the BAAC I would definitely say, “Go for it!” Volunteering means just spending time loving and socializing our animals. You can choose to walk dogs or just play with them in our meeting room. And if you’re a cat lover feel free to lounge in our cattery among 100 kitty cats or even curl up with a good book with them. The cattery is a HUGE open room with closed off smaller rooms for isolating cats for different times but all the cats are free roaming. Every day we have at least one dog up in our offices spending time with us, socializing them and giving them a break from being in the kennels. They each have their own outdoor kennel run times to romp and play. Basically, Briggs is an amazing facility with endless possibilities for happy endings. If interested please come and visit us! Located below is a chart showing the rise of numbers of spays and neuters over the years with Spay Today.
