Male or Female I have a 21 month old male Yorkie and I like to buy one more ( one is never enough) but I can't decide male or female? I need some advice from breeders. :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
If you are wanting a pet, in my opinion, a neuter male is the sweetest. I have 2 and would not trade them for all the tea in China. They are alot less demanding then my females and so loving. Give me a neutered male anyday. ;) |
I Always Say... They choose US! |
I love that you asked this question!! I have one neutered male and want another yorkie so bad!!!! My whole family has female yorkies, and my husband and I were the first in our family to get a male yorkie. After growing up with female yorkies, I can tell you that males are SOOOOO much more affectionate and eager to please than females. Females are very independant and are the opposite of eager to please. But, even though I love my little affectionate male, I also keep thinking that I would like to have a female. So, who knows what we'll end up with!!! Another plus of getting a male is that they are usually less expensive to purchase!! |
I had this same question last week. We've decided to get a little girl. Winston is totally a Mommy's boy and my husband wants his own Daddy's girl. Nid |
I have a male and a female and like having one of each. My female and my male are both affectionate. |

I LOVE IT!!!!! Hobbs is SUCH a mama's boy...although my husband claims that he doesn't like little dogs, I KNOW he gets so jealous. I have always heard that females take to the man of the house more than to women. I am sure this is just a rumor, but my husband would probably LOVE to have "daddy's little girl." :D |

When looking at Abbie's litter, all the pups were friendly, outgoing and confident; but Abbie kept coming up to me. One little girl would lay on my husband's shoe everytime he stood still. How hard was she to leave behind!? Well, since we were shopping for ME, we left with Abigail. As far as personality, I can't speak with experience - since she's only 4months old, and my first experience with Yorkies. But, she has (so far) proved to be warm, affectionate and tender-hearted. She gets very concerned if we make any noise like we're hurting. You know, middle-aged creaking of knees, etc. ;) So, maybe females change when they hit puberty? lol I dunno - but, I sure hope not! |
Don't know how true this is but found this link intresting http://www.all-about-yorkshire-terri...reterrier.html |
My girls are really affectionate. They love to be hugged and cuddled. But they also like their space at times. Ty, my male I had, he wouldn't leave my side for nothing. I even had to take him to the bathroom with me even if i was taking a bath he would lay on the floor and wait for me to get done. Females are defenitely affectionate but I think they are more independent as males are more dependent...Your male might have less problems with a female being introduced though. |

Chery..i know you weren't asking me this question but thought i'd throw my two cents in anyway lol.. I can't speak from a whole lot of experience because I have only had one male. I'm in a housefull of females..but I can say this..my male was easy to train..my girls...I could of built a bridge across the atlantic ocean and it would of been easier lol.. |

"You're walking along.. you doopity dooo.. all of a sudden you step in poo".. haha |
I love the girls for the wrong reason! I think they are adorable inPINK! But I love boys the best. My boy is the most loving little boy you will ever see. Genie,Cookie & Lola |
I only have one Yorkie, Oscar. But if my hubby would let me, I would get another...and it would be a male. Oscar has just in the last few months turned into a Romeo...he loves to cuddle and snuggle. He is very smart and was a breeze to housebreak...and he has ALWAYS been outside trained. I could not tell you the last time he had an accident in the house. I have had other dogs that were female and they could be a whole lot more snippy when they wanted to...my males just seemed to have a whole lot calmer demeanor. |

I bet if men were having this conversation about us women I wonder how much would be close to what we are saying about female yorkies lol..with the ecxeption of the potty training..i am quite confident we all use the potty lol |
Like I said, I grew up with female yorkies, and the male we got for Christmas is the first male yorkie of the family. It took months and months for our females to get potty trained. One of our females, she's 3 years old now, still goes #2 in the house if she feels like it. It only took Hobbs 2 weeks to get potty trained!!!! He is outside trained and goes 100% of the time outside. I couldn't believe has fast he learned! But as to whether ALL males are easier to potty train than ALL females, I have no idea. One of our females, she's 6 years old, it took her a couple of months, but she has not gone potty in the house since then. I think that the point I was trying to make is that Hobbs learned so fast because he got SOOOO upset when we would scold him for going potty inside. Whereas our females, if we scolded them, they would just stick their noses up at us and run the other way! hehehehe Sounds like how I act!! hehehehe But, when we get another one, I will probably get a female. Like someone else said, I can dress little females up in pretty pink clothes and put bows in her hair!! My husband won't let me do that to our male! |

I do love my little Dennis, but my girls were all so very special and in my opinion easier to handle. Dennis loves to look for trouble, hence the name “Dennis The Menace”. Oh no he is now barking at me, I think I am in trouble here, but my opinion still holds. |
my female is a daddy's girl and my male is a mommies boy....hard to say which because they are both so wonderful.....i would look around and choose by personality and not gender |

I completely disagree. I have a male and female. My male is very playful and full of energy. While my female will play when she is in the mood...she is so much more the lover in the house. Both can be found at the bottom of my feet all day. But, at night when it is time to cuddle on the coach...it is my female in my arms...and sometimes my male will lay at the bottom of my feet ( or fall asleep with daddy). I think training my little girl has been easier. My little guy is much more destructive! I love them both...and no matter what you choose my hunch would be you will love either one! |
I completely agree!!!!!!! You will absolutely LOVE either one!!!!!!!! I think that the ease of training has everything to do with how much time you are able to spend on it and consistency! |
My experience has been that girls are much more independent and also more protective. My girl is a barker! The boy isn't (yet- fingers crossed) My mother has had two girls and a boy and her girls were the barkers. The girls are affectionate but on their own terms. As far as potty training-our girls were easier. |
My male is easier to train than the female. The female is the more affectionate one though. She is a lover but she doesnt listen worth a d***! |
Our females are the barkers as well!!!!! My little boy hasn't started barking yet, so I'm crossing my fingers that he doesn't pick up any bad habits from our girls!!! |
Oh gosh I hope I didn't come across as to not get a female. Females are just as loving as just as much fun just in dif ways than males. Yet ALL of them loved to be loved..loved to go on walks..loved to be cuddled. ect.. ect. Either way you will love whichever you get. |
Sorry I have put so many posts on this thread!! I wanted to reiterate that neither males nor females are better than the other! Like the previous posts says, they are both loving and super smart. I believe it has almost everything to do with how they are raised. You will love male or female to death!! I have always had females, now I have a male, and I will probably get many more of both before it is all said and done! |
