This thread is really interesting because we have been talking about getting a female yorkie in addition to our two males. Our two boys are very rough and tumble, but very kissy and loving. They tend to gravitate to different family members for different things. They come to me to be loved and pampered, or if one of them gets hurt, they run to mommy for comfort. But they go to my husband and son to rough-house on the living room floor every night. The one problem I see with males is the dominance thing. Snickers was established as the dominant one early on (he's older), but Baxter now is challenging that and there have been some nasty 'dogfights'. Do females do this?

Yes there is always a dominate female she just may not show it unless she is pushed to. Tasha is six months older than jersey so dominance was already established but on rare occasions she has been known to put jersey in her place. Tasha is my most layed back dog I have but she is also top dog among the dogs. They don't cross her often. Some females will fight and some won't. My mixed breed dog Comet is an outside dog and when I had my pit nikita she tried to dominate comet and she lost. Comet took her to the ground and dominance was established and nikita never tried again. Most not all the time the dominant female is usually the one that was there first..at least thats how it's been at my house. I'm sure others may have dif situations than mine. You won't have a problem with your female and male on that though. They should get along fine once they are used to each other.

I have had both male and females dogs - and they have both been loveable and great.

But I deliberately got a little boy this time for two reasons:

1) Hopefully, he'll lift his leg and pee on tree stumps, bushes, etc. and not leave dead spots all over my lawn. Plus the female's urine has a lot more acid in it and does a lot more lawn damage.

2) Little boys can wear belly bands. They are great. And, I have never seen a diaper on a girl that didn't look totally weird - plus they never fit - and they're a lot more expensive.

I have a female Yorkie and she is 3 yrs old. She is perfect amount of independence, but I have only had female dogs in my life so I am not too sure about a male either. All I know is that she is open to cuddles all the time and follows me around everywhere and never wants to be left behind. When I take a shower she is usually right outside laying on my slippers. She is perfect. She isn't a yappy dog and she listens and isn't hyper at all...I would guess that it is all about the individual personality of the dog huh?? But I would like to get more info on male dogs and their behaviors.

I heard somewhere down the line that often time introducing a male or opposite sex to the first one is better because they will play more together and not be soo competitive?? What do you think? I have only had females. I have 2 other female larger mix dogs and I got the 2nd female to be playmates to the 1st one. What a mistake..the 1st dog never really liked her and they never played together..they are just siblings..Might be different with more playful dogs like yorkies?? or maybe it was a personality thing??
