Who uses heartworm meds?? I was wondering how many of you have your yorkies on heartworm meds?? Mine is 2-1/2 and she's never been on any...she stays inside 99% of her life so I didn't think she needed it??? but what if she did get it - would it be the end of her since they are so little?? |
i do... but not because i know a whole lot about it, mostly because my vet said it was important to snickers health and that was enough for me! from my very (general) understanding its catostrophic if they end up w/it |
I personally would not take the chance. I give Heartgard to all my babies. I give it to them year round. |
I do!!! :) |
Thank you for your quick replies!! That answers my ?? she will be getting on some very soon. |
Harley and Haley will be on heart worm pills for the rest of there little lives, it's a flea - heart worm pill you give to them once a month all year round. I rather be safe than sorry... i love my babies.... There mostly inside but summertime is right around the corner so they will be outside alot.... |
I just started my two on Heartgard yesterday. We do alot of camping and they are outside with us all summer long so we definitely don't take a chance. |

Oh--another thing--Heartguard protects against other kinds of worms as well--intestinal. |
Have your vet test your little one for heartworms before starting any hearworm medication since she has never taken any meds for it. :) |
I keep my dogs on it regardless to if they are indoors or out. (I live in Alabama...it is not uncommon for mosquitos to occasionally get in your house here.) I had a dog that had heartworms and was successfully treated once. That is not an experience I EVER want to have again. It was a risky surgery to remove the worms, a long unpleasant recovery period of confinement and costly up into the thousands! |
Around here where it gets so cold, Maddie only needs to be on it June through November. I've heard heartworm is a terrible thing for a dog to go through and many times fatal, so I guess I'd rather be on the safe side and use the heartworm meds! |
i do too :D |
I give Heartquard. I give it to my dogs May through November. |
yes we do because they get it from mosquitos and we have more than our share of those pests in our area. |
lexi get it tooo... |

never mind i guess you don't have to copy and paste..just click it lol |

Mine are on them year round. Where I live mosquitos are horrible. Have you asked your vet if she needs to be on them year round or just in the warm months? I would definitely check into it. |
Ginger is on Interceptor year round. Because she’s so small it is relatively inexpensive and worth it, to avoid potential problems. |

Me too. It kills more intenstinal(sp) worms than the heartguard. |

I get mine through the vet...so far I haven't found a place that can beat his price. And don't ask me what it cost per package per dog because I buy several packages at once for several dogs lol..I usually try to stock up on everything at once every winter..that way I have all I need for the summer and I know come Feb. It's time to buy everything again.. |
I give Max and Abbie Interceptor. They spend most of their time indoors, however I'm concerned about the mosquitos during the humid summer months |
Mine get Interceptor..... As I do not want to chance anything concerning my fur babies. |
Interestingly, they don't have heartworms (or rabies, for that matter) here in England. When I get back to the States, though, I will put Joey on heartworm medication the minute he gets back - if not before! He doesn't spend much time outdoors, but it's not worth the risk. |
I do too ! |
My Golden Ret. (Jazzy and Jeter) are both on interceptor and now Mayzie is too. I live in PA and I have killed a mosquito in the house here during the winter so I don't take chances. We are on it all year round. It's expensive for my GR because one is 97 lbs and his sister is 87 - I split a box between the 2 every 3 months. The cost for theirs is 40 bucks a box. I am glad Mayzie's will be for 6 months and the smallest dose so I'm sure it will be cheaper. It is just not worth skimping on preventatives! If anybody finds a good place to buy interceptor online, I would be interested in knowing about it. I am not even sure if you can purchase it anywhere other than a vet--does anyone know? |
Miko is on revolution which is heartworm preventive and for fleas, etc. all in one....It's not a pill, it's a liquid that you put on their neck between the shoulder blades and that's it. I think it's great! It's all-in-one! |
