| The ASPCA's Animal Poison Control Center also issued a statement declaring this rumor to be unfounded: Veterinary toxicologists at the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center have reviewed the claim described in a widely distributed email alleging a relationship between the use of Swiffer Wet Jet and liver failure in a dog. The email alleges that exposure to the ingredients in Swiffer Wet Jet caused a dog's death. The Swiffer Wet Jet system contains water (90-100%), propylene glycol n-propyl ether or propylene glycol n-butyl ether and isopropyl alcohol (1-4%). These ingredients are safe to use around pets when used according to label directions and would not cause liver damage at product concentrations. Propylene glycol n-butyl/propyl ether differs significantly from ethylene glycol, the potentially toxic ingredient present in most antifreeze products. Ethylene glycol is frequently implicated in causing renal failure in dogs following antifreeze ingestion. Propylene glycol n-propyl ether and propylene glycol n-butyl ether are very safe ingredients at levels used in cleaning products and do not cause kidney or liver failure. Anyway, you guys can check it out here: http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/swiffer.asp

| I know this is supposed to be an urban legend but the author of this post recently had a bout of poisoning with her dog. I believe they(she and her vet) had decided it could be nothing but the swiffer fluid. So although I am not sure the point that the cleaning products we use are probably fine for most dogs but yorkies and other small dogs are very close to the ground and in closer contact with them. I prefer to err on the side of caution. |

| Although it might not be true, I don't use the swifter anymore, as I did find out that it really doesn't clean my floors.. unless I change the pad about 10-20 times.. I was sitting on my floor trying to clean the grout and I noticed that I had a build up of dirt that was very diffiuclt to get up. And it had to be the swifter, because my house is only a few years old, I'm the only person who lived here, and I only used the swifter in the beginning!!

| Karen, I don't think that the Swiffer works either so I stopped buying it. The price is too high for something that is made of 95% water. No wonder it doesn't clean

I agree....that Swifter is Worthless! A good old fashioned Terry cloth on a pole sprayed with vinegar and water or diluted Murphy's Oil works much better and its cheaper! Francie | |

| pine Sol i got my new congoleum floor last Thursday and was told it would be okay to use PineSol on it but I wonder if it is harmful to the yorkies as well. I did use the swifter once but as you say, I did find it to be worthless. |

| I have laminate hardwood and the swiffer is for quick cleanups. Other than that I use PineSol or vinegar and water.. I usually drop her off at her daycare down the street when I do a full house cleaning Saturday mornings though. |

| I have used the swifter forever - and have never had any problems with any of my pets - dogs or cats. When I use it - it dries almost immediately. I never could figure out how this could be harmful to a pet. My pets do nothing more than walk across the floor now and then after it's dry. I have even put vinegar and water (like a lot of you use) when the other cleaning solution is gone. Anyway - it isn't anything that I would ever worry about. Carol Jean |
