| [News] Xylitol Sweetener Can Be Fatal to Dogs Just a warning for everyone, always good to know more information... --- The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is warning animal owners that xylitol, a sweetener found in certain sugar-free chewing gums, candies and other products, could cause serious, even life-threatening problems for pets. Dogs ingesting significant amounts of gum or candies solely or largely sweetened with xylitol may develop a fairly sudden drop in blood sugar, resulting in depression, loss of coordination and seizures, said Dr. Eric Dunayer, consulting veterinarian in clinical toxicology for the Animal Poison Control Center. "These signs can develop rapidly, at times less than 30 minutes after ingestion of the product," said Dunayer. "It's important that pet owners seek veterinary treatment immediately." The center advises pet owners to avoid offering pets food meant for human consumption and be diligent in keeping candy, gum or other foods containing xylitol (especially those that list xylitol as a first or second ingredient) out of the reach of pets. 'Small dogs have legs' at Screensavers.com It's not scientific, but if dog's popularity is judged by the number of downloads for a particular breed, then little dogs have overtaken big dogs. Screensavers.com says computer wallpaper of Shih Tzus is the most popular, surpassing America's usual favorite breeds Labrador and golden retrievers. In a survey of 20,958 downloads of 56 dog wallpapers and screensavers, The Shih Tzu, a toy breed developed to sit at the foot of the emperor of China, was the most popular, followed by the Chihuahua. The American Kennel Club still says Labradors are the most popular dog. "Chihuahuas have been in the news with Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell and another famous Chihuahua (Wheelly Willy) on book tour with his master," says Adam Solomon, general manager of Screensavers.com. "But the Shih Tzu caught us by utter surprise. I'm a big dog fan myself, but it looks like the small dogs have legs." Others dogs that round out the top 10 include: golden retriever (3); Labrador retriever (4); bulldog (5); beagle (6); Yorkshire terrier (7); dachshund (8); boxer (9); and Jack Russell terrier (10). http://www.commercialappeal.com/mca/...089053,00.html |
