Lexi loves children but about a month ago one of my neigbors had her little girl over 2 years old and they were sitting on the couch together and the little girl tipped over onto lexi and lexi was stuck under her, since then lexi is very skidish around children, it only takes a second. I was watching them very carefully and removed the child promply but she is still afraid it was an accident that has made an imprent.

My point exactly! I'm not sure who said adults can do the same things.... but face it, it's is WAY less likely.

Children are a wonderful thing, so are yorkies. They just don't go well together sometimes and accidents happen.

There are plenty of other breeds out there that are great with children. Why even risk it?

Well i'm trying to teach my 22 month old daughter to be gentle with our new pup. She loves her doggie. I've told her over time again not to grab her by the neck and she has stopped. She will just pet her and touch her face now and say Doggie. It's so cute. I will not let her play with her while i'm not around and picking her up is a definete no no. My child is very well mannered but yes there can be accidents by i'm trying every way possible to not let them happen.

One of the other problems with having children and yorkies is you will have other children over at your house to play and you cant always control how they will behave. My daughter had this one little boy over at our house and he kicked Chachi.

I have three children and twins on the way and have had no problems. Children aged 7, 5 and 3. I have had dogs since they were born and they know how to treat them. None of them are allowed to pick up Bailey, only pet him on the floor. Bailey is good with the kids and vice versa. When we have other children over I crate Bailey as it seems to work best for all. I agree that a small breed dog would not be the one of choice for a family with small children but we have adapted and so has Bailey. All of my children know how to do the Yorkie Shuffle when walking so this avoids a lot of accidents. Keep in mind that constant supervision is a MUST!!

Do you want a dog that requires constant supervision or someone that can hang out with your kids?

Yorkies make fine pets for some families with small children but you are asking for a lot of work. These dogs get hurt even when there aren't small children around but the risk factor is going to go up with kids if they run and play and act like regular kids.

Maybe a larger Yorkie...over 10lbs. ?

I have a 12 year old son and two teenage daughters who are lovely with my 16 week pup.My son came to puppy classes and has taught Holly to fetch.They have such fun together.I did have to insist he didn't wind her up too much though,but he is old enough to understand and loves her. I think a bigger,more resiliant dog would be best for smaller children. I had a lab as a child and that dog would let me roll all over it,it was so gentle.Hard for a child to walk,though,as he pulled,but that was down to training. Have you friends with Yorkies whom you could visit and get an idea? I would still advise something bigger.how about a Westie or a poodle or spaniel cross?

Whether you get a Yorkie or another breed of dog, you will have to supervise and teach your children. Children and dogs should never be unsupervised. Bailey's mum made a good point of crate use when other children come over. By the sounds of it some people here who have Yorkies and children are doing a good job of teaching.

Please don't let all the negative responses steer you away from getting a Yorkie if that is what your heart is set on getting. Just train your children on how they should and should not handle the dog.

I won't say there is no need for extra caution when it comes to young kids and small dogs. However, I think alot depends on the individual child/children. To put it bluntly, I have a 5 year old who is a saint when it comes to Trixie. She never tries to pick her up or pull on her or anything of that sort--even when we had the small pups in the house. (Course, she would have had to get through 2 locked doors in that instance...) We explain frequently to her the importance of being gentle, what to do and not to do. True, kids can cause accidents, but no more so than adults! I have tripped over Trixie several times because she was right under my feet and I didn't know it. I have also seen some 5 year olds that are rowdy and would be a threat to a huge dog.
Depends on the child and their individual behavior, IMO.

We have 4 children 8 6 3 1 and that was afraid at firt but my children are gentle with animals i completely trust my 2 oldre ones with Willow but will not leave her alone with the 2 lil ones accidents happen and she gets under foot easily but just be sure you make the right choice for your family. Look for a yorkie that would be larger/sturdier.

I have a 16 year old son, 11 year old daughter and an 8 year old son. They do great with Cowboy. We all talked about getting a pup for about 3 years. We finally convinced my husband and we have had Cowboy now for 1 year. He weighs 4 lbs. My kids take him outside and play with him alot. They are very careful with him and they know how fragile he is. He does well with them. But he does not like little kids. When my niece and nephews come over, I put him up in his gated room. I took him alot of places when he was little. He was around alot of little kids, but he still doesn't like them. He would avoid my 8 year old until recently. I don't understand it, because my 8 year old just loves him and is very gentle with him.We were discouraged by alot of people and even some of the breeders that I talked to. But, I have always wanted a yorkie and it has really worked out well for us overall. So, good luck if this is what breed you choose.
