Wow, I had no idea NBC was doing a special on it! It's so sad, but it gets the word out there and educates those that don't know not to buy from pet stores.

All I saw was the school news too...

I don't want to hurt anyone just in case someone on here like Wizard of Claws but have any of you ever been there?????

Wizard of Claws has got to be one of the worst...IMO

maybe you have to choose "Pet Pals" on the top left hand side of the screen. unfortunately, that site is not mac-friendly. anyone care to share what's being shown?

btw, i found this article. it does reference the news story as well as reveals a lot of interesting information about wizard of claws. Puppy Love? i had no idea they move 200 puppys a month!!!! the article references another site: Stop WofC that keeps track of ligitation, complaints, and other issues against WofC.

HBO is having a Special soon , i believe the 21st called : Dealing Dogs ! Saw a preview on it, want to watch it, but on the other hand not...breaks my Heart !!!!

I heard about that show...I want to see it even though I know I will be in tears. It makes you really want to go out and fight those puppymills. :mad:

i haven't finish reading the news article, but oye... as badly as wofc operates, some of the owners... well... i think this paragraph speaks for itself:

i think she should have weighed the dog AFTER a bowel movement... that'll take care of the 2 oz.

Everyone should read the "entire" article. It is really enlightening and does a good non-biased job of presenting the FACTS on both sides. Very interesting form this attorney's perspective.

I would never buy a dog from them or recommend them after what I read but some of the rumors written on here and other places on the internet are not true. I had read that they had been arrested for animal cruelty and that is not true. I had also heard that they had all of these inspection viloations but all 17 inspections made there have been "clean".

They are defintitely NOT people that I personally would ever consider buying a dog from.

Then Why defend them ? :confused: :confused:

THE WOC IS BAD NEWS AND everyone knows this - Someone from this site can testify to that anyone has doubts...I've heard nothing but awful things about them for over 3 years now.

On Animal cops - I remember a pet store that had a DEAD yorkie in the front window...THAT guy stayed in business too after he had left puppies with NO food and water for a whole weekend ....

So what if the WOC had a so called good inspection ? That doesn't make what they do ok...it just means they found ways around the system and I'm 99% sure they only meet BARE MINIMUM Requirements...or they are paying people to look the other way.

From all the articles I've read and pictures I've seen - the living conditions & care for all their puppies is horrendous. :mad:

I think I am going to go with the people who've been there. In fact I am writing a buyer beware about them again in my BLOG!!!

Believe me or not but what I stated is pure fact as I was there and seen with my own eyes what WOC does, says and looks like in there. Let alone the condition of the pups that I personally looked at.

I already knew I didn't agree with their business but having you say what you saw and reading the article gives me a better picture of what the business is really like as opposed to some of the "rumors" we have heard on these forums.

I've never doubted that the WOC was bad news....I just wish we could help shut them down.

I think everyone should write their local news station to ask them to bring this story to light as well. I highly encourage anyone who had a bad experience with a petshop or broker to do the same! It's time to get rid of these places people! I just got an email back from NBC

I just wanted to say that I enjoyed the information from the wizard of claws
story. I have been part of an internet site, yorkietalk.com in which people
have complained about WOC often. It is great to see some of these horrible
pet stores/puppy brokers brought to light.
Another story I would like to see that I don't feel gets enough coverage
is where these puppies come from. People need to know why not to buy from
pet shops, because most fo them come from puppy mills. Here in California
the pet shops sell dogs from Missouri, Arkansas, Iowa, etc. I have asked the
pet shops here why they ship those dogs instead of buying from a local
breeder. I was told that there aren't good local breeders here and the
standards for those states are higher. It simply isn't true. Those states
are infamous for puppymills.
It is about time that this comes to light and people start getting
educated on why not to buy from pet shops and where these animals come from.
They usually end up sick and the mothers are in horrible condition, kept in
cramped cages and are not socialized.

i really wonder what the requirements for a "pass" on an inspection. afterall, a restaurant in southern california can pass an inspection with a "C" grade but i would never eat at a restaurant with a "C" or even "B" posted outside its doors as required by law.

i have a feeling that to pass the inspections, WofC is a minimalist when it comes to the care of their animals. their large breed dogs get a 10 minute outside their cage per day. a mere 10 MINUTES PER DAY!!! and this is for larger breeds. i guess the smaller ones are kept in cages 24/7 except for the few minutes they get outside the cage for customer viewing.

Perhaps the problem is that most of us expect the manner in which the puppies are to be kept to be more than just moderately clean and fed.

I agree. The problem is the public not knowing that ALOT of petshop dogs come from puppymills. Even the petshops with the signs that say "Our dogs don't come from puppymills." They're all lies. I just finished writting my local NBC newstation and I recommend others to do the same. The public needs to know about puppymills and more investigations need to be done. More laws need to be passed. NBC 6 did a great new story on a petstore. I think that the same story needs to be covered here regarding our pet stores.
The horrors of Puppy mills and pet stores needs to be brought to light. People need to know not to buy dogs from pet stores, especially during this Valentines day. Many people buy overpriced dogs from the internet or Pet stores here in California. These dogs are treated inhumanely and the dogs are usually unhealthy and not properly socialized.
Many people go to the mall to window shop to find someone that perfect gift. Many people impulse buy a dog so they can bring it home right away. Hardly anyone asks where these dogs came from. Last month I went to a local pet store and asked that question. I went to Pet Works, a local petstore. On each cage the dog was labeled with a breed and it's place of origin. I noticed that all of them were from the midwest, most from Missouri, Iowa, etc. Lots from the same town. I asked why they ship the dogs here instead of sell from local, California breeders. I was told that it was because the breeders they buy from are out of state because the USDA has higher regulations for them. I know for a fact that isn't true. California has the most strict laws in regards to keeping animals. Puppies are bought in the midwest because they are cheaper to ship than to buy locally. It also also easier to run a puppymill in the midwest.
Most pet stores buy from brokers like hunte corp. Pet Works has a sign that says that they do not buy from puppy mills. Why are ALL the animals from the midwest then? Why can't they find just ONE local breeder? Is it possible that they only buy from Backyard breeders? Is it because the good breeders want to place the puppies themselves? Here is a website:

The midwest is the puppymill capital of the world, and Californians are the ones paying for it. Californians pay at LEAST an average of $500 more for the same dog in the midwest. So Californians are now buying in pet shops or buying from brokers and sending these puppymill dogs here. We end up paying for high vet bills because these dogs were very poorly bred. We also pay to have the dog put down when it all could have been prevented. Health certificates are required to ship a dog, but they only cover the bare minimum.
Pet shop animals have tendency to have more genetic problems and sicknesses than a dog from a reparable breeder would have. Puppy mills do not test for genetic illnesses. Many animals get sick from being overcrowded or from contagious illnesses such as kennel cough. Many are also never tested for potentially dangerous illnesses such as distemper.
Of course people should go to a shelter to look for a pet first. But if a person doesn't find what they were looking for they should turn to a good, reparable breeder, not a petstore. Please do a story on puppy mills, society needs to know about these things and where their dogs are coming from. Many people have had bad experiences with pet shops and puppymill dogs. People don't know that these animals are forced to stay in small cages their entire lives.

good job cheryl! i think so many people are duped by the cuteness of the puppy pictures on WofC's website that they disregard or become ignorant to where the puppies come from and the condition of the puppies at the store. i myself have ooo'd and ahhh'd at WofC's website until i googled for reviews on WofC to check how reputable they are and BLAM! boy did i get a list full of stuff!!! i bet most of the 200 puppies sold per month are mail ordered by people who have never visited their facilities!
