My Little Retreiver! Higgins has a whole new world! He learned to SWIM today! I was sitting down on our dock (we live on a lovely small lake in Maine) about an hour ago and threw a twig in the water, fairly close to shore. Higgins went right in to fetch it. It wasn't out over his head. He brought me the twig and I threw it just a little further out in the water and he went right in after it. This time he lost his footing when he started to float and came right out. BUT he turned around and saw that stick floating out there just beyond his reach and couldn't stand it. So back in he went and SWAM out, grabbed it and brought it back! That did it! I have never seen him SO EXCITED! WOW! He would look at me and race out to the end of the dock and stare out at the lake as if to say "Look at this great big bathtub and it's ALL MINE! He was VERY proud of his new skills when Don came down to see him swim. And he thoroughly enjoyed lording it over Pogo, who HATES to swim. When we all came up to the house, he spent 15 minutes racing around drying himself off on the carpet and the slipcovers.......sigh....... Ayuh. He's all boy, our Higgins!

Oh yeah.....he looks like a chihuahua out of the water! Now Bettyanne, I'm surprised that you don't have dainty pink water wings for Toto...... Pogo has had a lifevest from LL Bean for years, but he's never worn it. Now we'll have to see how Higgins likes kayaking and canoeing. Maine Dog!

| How cute! Mine don't want to venture into the lake. We have lake property and take them frequently but they just don't care for it. I think it would be fun for them. By the way, you live in one of my favorite states here in the US. Wish I was out of the Texas heat and up there in Maine! It's beautiful there.

Bring Mia and Bentley and C'MON up to Maine!!! Bring your sweaters though.....It's been a cold summer until this week when it finally ventured into the 80s..... We'll see if the "kids" like lobstah! Although, at the price of lobstah right now, we don't give the dogs even a smidgeon..... Speaking of gourmet food, we caught Higgins chomping on some wild mushrooms from our yard and they sure did make him throw up! He's fine today. Just hope he has learned a lesson! Higgins is all dried off now and sooooo shiny and soft! There is nothing like pond water to beautify a dog's coat.

Congrats little Higgins!!! You're a natural! I've only seen Yoda doggy paddle for a little bit (in a small kiddie pool), but we do want him to learn how to swim. I guess it comes naturally? I find it amazing that Higgins was brave enough to go out and venture out into the water all by himself. Does he paddle with all 4 paws? We always call Yoda a wet rat after his showers. Totally different creature when the hair is not all poofy.
