| New Yorkie and Small Sizes Hi everyone! I recently had to say goodbye to my loving yorkie after 8 years. She died from lymphoma and it was devastating. She originally was supposed to be around 6lbs but she topped at 4lb 6oz, everyone always asked me if she was a teacup and I would be clear that I never intended for her to be that small but came to love the ease of taking her everywhere with me. Throughout her life she battled a few health issues with her knees and digestive issues which we were very delicate with her diet and supplements. Then she developed lymphoma and I always wondered if she was badly bred and her size had something to do with her health issues. I am now talking to a breeder I sought from the akc marketplace and am on the waitlist for the next litter with a dam and sire I met and love. She believes the pups will be around 4-5lbs. I am battling myself with this because I did turn to love my last babies size and that she was easy for me to bring around but I keep thinking back to the health issues she had. Would 4-5lbs be too small? Do dogs this size typically have health issues and live not as long? They are not being sold as “teacups”. I just don’t think I can go through that terrible ending again, thank you all! |

| So sorry for your loss. My moms rescue yorkie passed of the same thing. It is all about genetics and good breeding. Yes the smaller ones can get injured more easily but that’s avoidable if you’re careful. Just an added note just because they are AKC breeders doesn’t mean they are good so make sure you look into everything. Like not breeding females under 5 pounds, they do all the OFA test available (https://ofa.org/chic-programs/browse-by-breed/?breed=YT) that the dogs are raised in the house, they keep the puppies until 12 weeks and so on.

| So very sorry for your loss. Lymphoma is evil. I don't think yorkies become ill "just" due to size. It is a lot about breeding as Taylor said. If I were looking for a breeder I would ONLY get a puppy from one who did the OFA testing for known genetic conditions. Going to one, you will definitely pay more, but getting a well bred yorkie puppy is best so that some of the common genetic issues are not something you will deal with. Look at the link Taylor shared. You can see all of the conditions in yorkies that CAN be tested. Best wishes in your search.

| I am so very sorry for your loss. The least expensive thing of owning a yorkie is the price you pay for it. It's the vet bills you pay down the road for ill breed yorkies, and the heartbreak you go through when they have to leave us. PLEASE follow the advise Lovetodream and ladyjane have given you. (((hugs)))
