Yay! I found me! Figured out my account! We brought Little Lord Nelson home today courtesy Wendy White of WENWYTES yorkies. Teddy, who is 9 years old, is terrified of this 12 week old puppy and I am really hoping things get better with time. It's distressing to see my best boy upset and scared. I can't seem to upload any pics 😕 |
Did you try resizing the pictures. They have to be really small to upload. |
Yayyy on finding yourself. Pictures have to be 200KB or under to post on YT. Teddy will come around, he's terrorized because puppies don't smell like a dog. They are bouncing balls with sharp teeth to Teddy. It could take up to 2 months before Teddy will play with the baby. Make sure Teddy has a safe place where puppy can't get him. My now passed girls would stay on high grounds (the sofa) when I would bring home a new baby. They will become BFF. Make sure Teddy is the first for every thing, the first to be greeted when you come home, the first to get a treat, the first to get his food bowl, etc. Never leave the two together unsupervised. Teddy will be just fine, he will come around in his own time. |

I'm trying to do very gentle exposure therapy with him. I did not, for one minute, think there would be an issue because he is the most friendly, confident dog when we're out meeting/greeting other dogs. But, with this puppy, he won't give it eye contact, won't engage and barks with whale eye at the side of his head from a distance. It's not even been 24 hours and I know it's a process..... |
Teddy has been the only furbutt in his domain, now there's this furry bouncing ball of hair in his domain. As I have said, puppies do not smell like a dog, so Teddy doesn't know what it is. His actions / behavior is normal when you bring home a new baby. Teddy being friendly outdoors with other dogs is different from having some strange thing living in his house. He needs time to adjust to the new kid, it is not going to happen over night. He will interact with the puppy in his time, which could take up to two months. Don't force the puppy on Teddy, don't force a friendship. All you describe in Teddys behavior is normal when a new baby enters an only furbutts life / home. You will see, they will be BFF. I forgot to ask in my first reply, is Teddy neutered. |

Benefits of dog neutering Eliminating the risk of testicular cancer Reducing, aggression, marking and humping Calmer behavior due to decreased testosterone levels When To Have Your Dog Neutered dogs can be neutered at any time after 8 weeks of age, veterinarians recommend waiting until at least 6 months old. No one loves the idea of having their fur baby undergo surgery, but as dog parents we have to do what’s best for our pets. Since Teddy has anxiety issues, as Nelson gets older and is still intact, he will sense this and "could" instigate fights. |

From internet: Yes, 2 intact male dogs can live together when they have a responsible owner. However, depending on each of their personalities, they may or may not live in harmony together.02 Experts recommend adopting a dog of the opposite sex, but it is up to the owner to really get to know their dogs and be ready to recognize any signs of tension between them.2 Neutered dogs are less confident and more anxious than intact dogs. This last part would be a worry for either one of them! I already have this issue with Teddy and don't want this for 2 of them. |
I just wanted you to be aware. At Teddys age I wouldn't neuter him unless it was a medical necessity. Self education on dogs in general is always best. |

However, I will keep my EYES and MIND open in the event things evolve towards a way which means this needs reconsidered! Thanks, again xxxxxxxxxxxxx |
