Default 12 yr old, 4lb Mya limping

My 12 yr old, 4lb, Yorkie, Mya has been limping and holding up her right front paw. After examining her the vet felt it was a pulled shoulder muscle and gave her an anti inflammatory/pain med that upset her very, very sensitive GI system so now has given Mya Gabapentin. She is taking .25 twice a day for a week but no change yet. Mya is on Royal Canin Gastrointestinal low fat dry dog food because of her GI issues and so I understand the change in meds had to be made. There has been no x-ray done as of yet and they just say to continue the Gabapentin for another week or two. I feel like I should be doing more...any thoughts from anyone. She is eating well and of course drowsy from the med which is OK because it will give her leg/shoulder the rest it needs. Feeling helpless...

When she overdoes it, Piper has trouble with her left front leg (limps, but only briefly); and once-in-awhile an "old" back injury flares up. When she is in noticeable pain, I give her one 1/4 of a 75mg Rimadyl--ok to give every 12 hours. I'm sorry you and your little one are going through this, but totally agree that rest is the very best thing--and that ain't easy with our girls cuz they just don't get "rest." When my vet said no walks for Piper for four or five days, I told him I'd just drop her off at his house and let him explain it to her...!!

Thank you for the info, but Mya has a super sensitive GI tract. This would be a medication hard for her system to tolerate. That's one of the biggest parts of my dilemma in finding meds for her.

Some of the yorkies do develop problems with the ligament in the shoulder. One of mine many years back ended up needing surgery but the only option was surgery....and arthrodesis which is actually a fusion of the joint. He had problems with both shoulders . One was worse so the specialist opted to only do the one hoping there would be less work for the other. It actually did work, but I always hated the way he walked afterwords, like a stiff leg. He didn't seem bothered though and it did help because prior to surgery he was losing balance and falling over.

They do have different braces that you could look into. Honestly, if you have one close by and can do it financially, I would seek an opinion from a board certified orthopedic surgeon. They would be able to help you manage this!

Here is a link where you can search for a small dog board certified surgeon. I would read the resumes before picking one.

I have a pup with sensitive GI issues who has taken Metacam without a problem. I give it with food...actually put it in her food (the liquid)

Wish I had tried that....but she will usually not eat her food if I try to sneak in any medication. I'm now trying a product from a company called PetWellbeing; Agile Joints. I just started her on that today. Have also ordered another I am going to add on called Comfort Gold which hopefully will give her faster relief from any pain or discomfort. She's still eating and drinking so that's reassuring. The vets at this PetWellbeing website are very informative and helpful and after a family member had excellent results with their products, I did some research and decided it was worth the try. Aside from her IBS, Mya has been such a sturdy little trooper. It's hard to watch the limp....I'll just keep moving forward with what my heart feels is best. I'm not completely ruling out the Amantadine that her vet prescribed....but going to give this a try. Keep any suggestions coming and I will stay in touch with "yorkietalk". The vets in my area are just not real familiar with this tiny breed....

Metacam liquid is tasteless....and such a small drop really. I have a 5 lb pup on it and he has NO idea anything is in his food, but it is canned so that makes it easy.

Yes, please let us know how she is.

Callie had IBD and was taking Metacam daily for the last few years of her life with any issues either

Piper takes pills for incontinence, allergies, pain...only the proin daily. However, anytime she takes a pill, I "bury" it in a bite of chicken. I keep boiled chicken on hand for treats and pills; I make it up in advance and freeze to have at-the-ready. When I ask Piper if she's ready to take a pill, she is right there! Piper's diet is strictly limited to prescription digestive food and her boiled chicken./COLOR]

I did the boiled chicken and Mya will take her drops easily now. Thank you for the tip. It was so simple to boil chicken breast, shred it and then freeze some for over time. Anything I have to give her now should go easily.
