Poop Crisis HELP!! Ok, here goes…… My male 3 year old adopted Yorkie has a disgusting problem. I warn you seriously to stay away from this post if you are grossed out by poop issues because this one is the worst I’ve ever scene!!!! Ok, now if you are still following (and I warned you!!!!), here is the issue. My sweet yorkie baby likes to eat poop. Not just his own poop, not just his pup siblings’ poop, not just the cat’s poop, but human poop. “HOW?????” you might ask. Good question.! The first time I understood. my niece pooped in the house and the puppy got to it first. It was gross, but my fault for not paying attention. The second time a few days later was scarier. my niece pooped in her diaper, and Kiki ran over and kept trying to sniff her tush, then started nipping and pulling at it and slobbering then really trying to have dinner (thank gawd he didn’t hurt her at all!!!!!!!!!!) Ok, so I of course told my sister not to bring her niece over anymore because my baby comes first and her daughter is maybe causing the issue. Then one day, I come home from work, and my boyfriend tells me Kiki is so gross.” I couldn’t barely speak I was so shocked and stunned, how can you say that about our baby? He said the dog started barking when he went to the bathroom and closed the door. He was hollering and whining and crying and sounidng like he was dying. He didn’t want him in the bathroom when he was doing his business, so he paid him no mind other than to hush him and tell him it’s OK and he’d come out soon. Well obviously Kiki didn’t understand any of that and kept screaming like he was hurt. So when he opened the door (from the “throne”), he ran in and kept barking. Then he climed in his lap and tried to lean into the toilet! When he tried to move him, he started screaming again and tried to push between my legs as hard as he could while slobbering and licking and biting. I told him that was crazy and thought he was being dramatic. BUT: Later that day, I saw it myself when I went potty. Out of control barking at the door, then he tried to jump in the toilet with me on it, over and over and over!!! This same problem has been going on for weeks!!! If I try to crate him, all he does is poop on himself, roll in it, and eat it. If I take him outside, he poops then tries to eat it. If I watch him like a hawk, he tries to poop right in front of me and eat it. I am running out of places to move my cat’s litterbox because he runs at them if he can while they are using it and then digs up poop (or scares my kitty, who do I now need to get rid of) and eats it. No one will come to my house anymore. (Don’t even ask me about the time a guest tried to quietly use the bathroom—Kiki went crazy as usual and it was so embarrassing for us both). Now Kiki likes to spend his time staring at the (closed) toilet and whining. I am at the end of my rope and I have dealt with tough dogs before! I am sick of pottying at work, restaurants, or the library to avoid the howling and yelping (or WORSE) in my own house. My boyfriend is ready to give up or move out. He HATES it when Kiki comes into the bed with us or tries to lick him. (I should mention there was an accident or two in the bed where Kiki pooped and then tried to clean it up by eating it but didn’t do the best job). I went to the vet (two) and the vet said Kiki is HEALTHY, and that she can’t understand the behavior but told me not to worry about any medical conditions. I could tell she was shocked though. Kiki is my world and she’s always adorable and full of energy, but I don’t know where I went wrong!! I feel like a bad yorkie-parent, but I am going crazy!!! |
OMG.....I have heard of eating their own poop, a siblings and cats, rabbits, squirrel, but never human poop. Mine if not watched will eat his. I have read their fresh poop still smells like their food and reason they eat it. Many years ago a vet I had been using told me my now passed girl ate hers because she was lacking something in her diet. I am surprised your vet did not have a clue. You say your pup is adopted, how long do you have him, has he been doing this from the time you got him. I hope one of our more knowledgeable members may have a solution for this. |
Did they run blood work? What is she eating food wise? I think you are going to have to get a trainer or behavioralist involved. |
Yes, they ran bloodwork I wish I knew more. I got him from a cousin's acquantence three months ago and the human poop issues started about a week after he arrived (he was already eating and rolling in his own, the other pup and my kitty's right from the start). To tell the truth I've been afraid to ask the old owner about this since its so embarassing! I feed my babies Taste of the Wild and they seem to like it! |

Oh my gosh, what food do you think is good. Also my kitty's food is this so is that bad for cats too?? |

THANK YOU! Should I give my babies rice right now to make up for it before I try the new food/ |

Hope you find a solution to this SOON. I know it worries you. |
So sorry to hear about this challenging problem. There is hope. It will get better once you figure out what might be causing it. I used to foster a lot of dogs for rescue and had seen two dogs eating poop. In one case it was following the dog having a case of giardia. After the parasites were gone the problem did go away. In the other case it was from a food absorption nutrition deficiency. In this case we switched the dog from dry to a raw frozen diet and it really helped. |
[WARNING AGAIN, GROSS STUFF TO FOLLOW, turn back now] My BF had some friends over last night to celebraite a birthday. Well people had a few drinks and some pizza and had a nice time but one guest needed to use the restroom and thought nothing of it (obviosly he didn’t want to tell his friends what he was doing). Well Kiki of course went wild and even thouh he flushed there were some…leftovers. You can imnagine the rest..........!!!!!!!! Trainers called we are done with this insaneness. It was so bad. I am going crazy!!!!! My BF is beyond done even if theirs a trainer coming |
Things have esclated! Yes, we hired a behavioralist. He says it's a long haul and will take a lot of time and its day by day by day. In the meantime: For the holidays, my BF's grandma came to visit before christmas (even though we celebrate hanukkah usually). She uses diapers. It was a total nightmare. She had to defend herself with her cane from Kiki the eater. After dinner, my BF told me he was done and moving out for the new year unless Kiki is gone. Well I guess its come to this. Normally id say he's wrong but it was so horrible and I cant stand the problem any more. Im selling him unless things change now. Also, merry christmas and happy holidays to all! |

Seriously? This is not the Dog's fault. Print a Sign, Frame it, and Hang it over/behind your Toilet.....'PETS IN HOUSE, PLEASE SHUT THE TOILET LID.' |

Cat Poop..... Cut a small, cat sized hole into, the short side of a Storage Tub with lid. Cut the hole about 1/2 the way up. For large dogs, THIS will stop the problem, but if the dog is STILL trying to get to the litter, place a large heavy tub of new Kitty Litter, tilted in front of the doorway. For smaller dogs, place your this Kitty Litter Pan up upon something so that the cats can get to it, but not your dog.... Not only will this stop dogs from getting into the Litter, the litter will smell less, and is so much more attractive for human eyes. Human Toddlers will stay out of it too. |
I have had many puppies, everyone of them was unplanned meaning, friends or family member I was shopping with would say ohhhhh a pet shop, lets go in and see the puppies, I would be the one that came home with one. Knowing having a dog would be a commitment. Although they were all unplanned each one was like the wedding vow to me. To have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part. Not all of my puppies were perfect, no issues, I seeked help for what I could not train out of a dog myself. I would never give up on a dog that had issues, dogs are a lifetime commitment. My pups and I were a package deal, love me, love my dog. If some man told me to decide either the dogs does or I go, I would open the door and wish him good luck, it would be obvious he didn't love me enough to work with me to help resolve the issue. If you have given up on this baby and re-home him, do not ever get another dog. Dogs are like toddlers, they have to be taught what is right, what is wrong and that takes time and a lot of patience. I will say your pup does have a bad issue, but it is fixable, it takes time and commitment on your part. Having him crate trained and crate him when you have visitors would have resolved the issue you just had, or block him off in a room where he can see you and visitors but cannot get to the bathroom. There are many things that could have been done to avoid this last fiasco. I don't blame the dog, I blame the owner for not taking proper precautions knowing how the dog is. |

So judgey!!! And you buy dogs from a store and say its bad to sell them to loving homes i will check out??? Also, I didn't say marriage vows to a dog i bought even though i love him. If I listen to you I won't ever say marriage vows to anyone since no one in the world accept this board would think a poop eating dog who growls and whines at a toilet all day (!!!!) AND ATTACKS OLD PEOPLE AND BABIES TO EAT THEIR POO is worth it. And he just loves to poop in his crate and roll and eat it too, and he can tell when someone uses the toilet and starts going insane and sooooo loud even in the crate across rooms (maybe hes part bloodhound!!!). Also why should I mkae my kitty have to crawl in a stinky hole to avoid Kiki?? I tried a covered litter and my baby doesnt like it. |

I guess I cant get over the aggression. Kiki scares me when he goes after vlunerable people like babies or seniores!! |
Also, my poor kitty. Why should the cat suffer because I made a mistake with a very sick dog who makes the kitty miserable and scared and making me move the cat's toilet when Kiki cant leave me in peace on mine? |
Also, I dont understand why yorkie rescuses only help yorkies and even ask if they are part yorkie. that seems cruel and biased. I am doing reserch at your urging and I am finding a lot of things I dont like!!! |

And to answer your comment about me buying dogs in pet stores, the last time I bought a dog was 1997, there was no media on puppy mills, I never heard the words puppy mill until 2001. Fortunately for me they were healthy dogs until like all senior dogs they started having issues at 11 and 12 years old. As I have stated in another post, do not get anymore dogs, you don't have the commitment to work on problems they may have, and, if you do not have any children I suggest you not have any babies because, the first time that baby poops in their diaper and you don't change it fast enough and that baby winds up eating their own poop or eats it and smears it on the wall or between the bars of their crib, you'll be looking to re-home that baby. |
Just to summerize, here's what YT folks have told me: Because I adopted a really gross yorkie and was lied to by the prevouis owner a few months ago I must: 1) Give up my boyfriend 2) Refuse to allow my niece to visit 3) Refuse to allow old people to visit 4) Make my kitty miserabel and build some wierd cage to poo in to avoid attacks 5) Never have another dog 6) NEVER HAVE A BABY Wow this went realy mean! And you bought puppy mill dogs at a pet store on a wim and say you didnt know better. well neither did I!!!! P.S. Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all!!!! |

2 and 3-No where did anyone suggest to not have babies, children or seniors over. You know what issues your dog has, find a suitable place where he has no access to your bathroom. 4-It was suggestions how to keep your pup out of the kitty litter box. There are many members here on YT that have cat and yorkie, it's not uncommon for any breed dog to eat cat poop. Many members that have this issue found ways to keep the litter box where their dog cannot get at, suggestions were given. 5-In my opinion you should not have any more dogs because if they are not perfect off to the pound they go. You have a behaviorist that told you it's fixable but will take time, you do not want to put the time in. In the end this poor innocent little dog will get euthanized, not by you but by being passed from one owner to another owner because you do not want to put the time in to work this bad habit out of this dog. Just as this person that sold you this dog did not tell you he was a poop eater, I am sure you will not tell someone that will buy him or adopt him he eats poop because you know no one will want him if they know the truth about the dog. 6-In my opinion no, you should not have babies, you have no patience to teach, train right from wrong. You came to Yorkie Talk asking for help. This is a community of yorkie LOVERS trying to save this dogs life by offering suggestions, advise, no one wants to see dogs re-homed or given to rescues if a problem is fixable. You asked for help and was given suggestions. But you want the easy way out, get rid of the dog. |
